Alice Levine leaves Radio 1 after 9 years

I’m sorry to see Alice leave. She’s been a fantastic presenter, and since starting with late night shows, has risen well to deserve the slots she does. Her show with Dev has never been the best, mainly because of Dev and the character that he sometimes portrays (duos just haven’t worked IMO).

I haven’t listened to the station much lately, and I read on Facebook that her tone of voice lately gives a vibe that she just doesn’t want to be there anymore. Is this true, would anyone agree? During her time at the station she hasn’t exactly been boosted her to a slot where she could excel in it. Clara’s or Drivetime would be perfect for her. Whether she’s just not been given the chance or hasn’t pushed for a better slot will remain unknown. And maybe she’s just had enough.

Of course, all this is pure speculation.

Alice is a beautiful girl, has a lovely voice and can be quite funny. Yes, I’m a man and like her. If you’ve seen her on other programmes away from Radio 1, she is great - Taskmaster was a brilliant example of her character. She has talent away from radio, something that is better than radio and can be put to good use.

When she first joined, I had never heard of her. Background research soon made me realise what she’d previously done.

Finally - it’s been nearly 7.5 years she’s been at Radio 1, not 9. She’s joined in January 2013, so soon after Moyles left as he was meant to do the “Phallice” late night shows.

I'm also sad to see her leave, Dev & Alice has become my favourite weekend show, at least after they got moved to afternoons. They were fine on their own before, and felt really forced at the time to pair them up, but somehow 1 + 1 became 3. And now they've had like 1 or 2 weekends on air as a duo this year, Alice was mostly off to do other comedy/podcast stuff (probably this is what she had to gave up radio for), even after Maya left they've got split up for some unknown reason.

I don't know what's next for Dev, he probably stays on, I've got nothing against him, it's just a step backwards. Maybe a Dev & Arielle could work?

Phil & Alice was also a favourite of mine, though it didn't last very long (1-2 years maybe?) and no one remembers it today. At least Alice does. I wish the best for her for the future.

Not true. It’s her style & has not really changed in the last few years.

I am really going to miss Dev & Alice together. It is definitely the best weekend show right now by a mile. Once they found their stride, they gelled well together & it’s my type of humour.

They have still been appearing on each other’s weeks to play features like Beat Fighter.

i wondered if it was more a technical arrangement that meant they weren’t together. The first week of the new schedule they were (Alice in the Studio, Dev at Home) but when their show came round again with Dev in the Studio... Alice wasn’t on because “She has rubbish WiFi” ??‍♂️

Surely time Arielle Free and Adele Roberts got more airtime on the station?

Personally, a change I can see happening is Dev moving to 1Xtra, Adele to weekend afternoons, Arielle to early breakfast allowing somebody new on weekend early breakfast. Alternatively, they could just move Arielle to weekend afternoons and leave Adele where she is but for some reason I quite like the idea of Adele during the day, she also has a bigger profile than Arielle I think :) This is all assuming Jordan gets all 3 of the 10am-1pm weekend slots.

Dev used to do early breakfast on 1xtra before Trevor & Gemma

    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
    • Just watched that advert and it made me realise quite how many 'big' specialist presenters there were back then
    • I've been reminded of this Radio 1 cinema advert. I remember being so excited to see it. The In New Music We Trust era. Everything felt so cool, even if they had Westwood.
    • Just Vick and Katie on Wednesday (and presumably Thursday as well).
    • Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false.   Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global?  He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC.  Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful?   It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going.  Roman and Jordan have the same management team.  Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC.  They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer.  They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him.  If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker.  Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan.  None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones.  It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.
    • Wow, surprised he signed a new contract in September but it says a lot about Jordan that he continued to a very high standard throughout last summer/autumn if this was all going on in the background.
