Maya Jama to leave Radio 1

On the 3.30 Newsbeat today it was announced that she is leaving Radio 1. What are people's thoughts on this?

I'm hoping that Jordan will be able to takeover her Friday & Saturday shows for when the schedule returns to normal... it seems the most obvious option to me.

I think that intill it get back to normal, Jordan and Dev  And  Alice are just going to switch around. With Jordan picking the exart shows on Friday and Saturday, when it all gets back to normal.

Long Term who knows what going to happen. We will all just have to wait and see.

Just thinking, something weird about the way it's been announced. The timing and the wording and the way it's all being done on social media. Not suggesting it means anything, it just feels different to the way these things have been announced in the past.

Twitter replies seem to be about ⅔ people gutted she's going and ⅓ hoping Jordan's gonna get her shows.

I'm actually a bit gutted she's leaving. She's improved massively in the last 2-2.5 years she's been on Radio 1. Whilst still not perfect, she appealed to a certain group of listeners and brought them to Radio 1, the BBC Sounds statistics prove just that!

As much as I like Jordan, I don't think he's quite ready for Drive full time just yet. I think give him Friday-Sunday on a permanent basis for a while to get him into the routine of constantly doing 3 shows a week, then a potential switch for Jordan and Grimmy in the future. Although I get the feeling Grimmy might leave rather than go to weekends. If night times were offered again though ?‍♂️

I’ve been listening to Radio One for years (definitely not their target demographic anymore) but I can honestly say that she was the worst presenter they’ve ever hired.

She had nothing interesting to say, poor music knowledge and never really gelled with the other presenters. Do you remember when they shoe horned her into Scott and Chris’s Friday show? It was a complete disaster and really showed the divide between presenters at the top of their game and a poor amateur.
Plus, she’s the only person to ever block me on Twitter. I called her out for making yet another mistake with pronunciation and she replied with a barrage of personal abuse.

On the other hand Jordan is fab!

Maya Jama leaving Radio 1? I never thought I'd see the day!

In all fairness, this has all come about sooner than I thought - especially since she was doing well on BBC Sounds. I wasn't expecting to see this at least for another year or two - six months at the earliest. Having said that, even though she was popular with quite a few listeners, I wasn't a fan of her presenting style. There were certain things that used to grate on my nerves as both a listener and radio geek over the two years - least of all the attempt to be funny or throw in a goofy remark every third sentence, in every link.

But that was then, and looking ahead, I think Jordan North should get the remaining slots since he got so badly sidelined in 2018. Grimmy's not a bad shout, and Vick Hope was rumored to join R1 at some point - maybe now's the time.

But whatever happens, I'm looking forward to finally having Radio 1 back on all weekend, every weekend.

On a slightly lighter note, I wonder what her best bits at the station were? ??

Submissive back hole surely? ??

Anyway, on another note, I could see them possibly continuing this schedule until around September time and then have a large change around of people that might be announced around July time. September would also mark the year of Weekend Early Breakfast and if they haven’t found that to be a success, then they’d have to find something else for Arielle to do, so maybe she could take over Maya?

To be honest, with greatest respect she's been and gone without me taking any notice. Maybe I don't listen to R1 as much as I did 10 to 15 years back, but she's hardly gonna be on the throwback shows for the 60th anniversary in a few years really.

on the grid.

    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
    • Just watched that advert and it made me realise quite how many 'big' specialist presenters there were back then
    • I've been reminded of this Radio 1 cinema advert. I remember being so excited to see it. The In New Music We Trust era. Everything felt so cool, even if they had Westwood.
    • Just Vick and Katie on Wednesday (and presumably Thursday as well).
    • Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false.   Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global?  He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC.  Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful?   It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going.  Roman and Jordan have the same management team.  Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC.  They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer.  They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him.  If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker.  Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan.  None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones.  It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.
    • Wow, surprised he signed a new contract in September but it says a lot about Jordan that he continued to a very high standard throughout last summer/autumn if this was all going on in the background.
