Scott Mills Sunday nights on Radio 2

Thought i'd start a thread on this as he's covering for 12/15 weeks

Listened back to the show this morning sounded good, Scott is really able to adapt to the Radio 2 style and audience it's really good to hear him doing long links and letting his personality come out as opposed to three back to back songs, a 30 sec speed link followed by two more songs which was more how he used to be on drive on Radio 1

Couple of bits I noticed

When he interviewed Tom Hardy he paused and said "Edit" may mean it was a pre recorded interview ? or just a saying

At the end he said in his seg into the 9pm news "this is a wisebuddah production for radio 2" so is he working for Wisebuddah then?

Wisebuddah produce that show for Radio 2, so for this stint he’s working with Wisebuddah’s production team for Claudia On Sunday.  The edit thing must’ve been something they forgot to take out in post, unless it was actually live and just a little nervous verbal tick, I noticed it as well.  I think it was really interesting hearing a bit of long form interviewing, and generally longer bits of content, but even though more music heavy, I feel his personality comes across more on R1, he’s more comfortable there, and I’m sure he’ll share more anacdotal stuff in time on Radio 2, he really is starting to sound natural there.

I wonder why Wisebuddah produce it? and not Radio 2? is it because of the time it's on and day of week easier to contract it out

Also noticed he has his own jingle package for Radio 2 as well

Your right about the being comfortable on R1 I mean so would you be comfortable with something your doing daily as opposed to weekly and that was the first show

I bet he sounds like part of the radio 2 family by January and I bet he gets more work off the back of it

It's politics - the BBC has to contract out a percentage of its programmes to private production companies (like Wisebuddah, Audio Always who do Life Hacks, etc) because of concerns it had an unfair competitive advantage. The quota was upped a couple of years ago if I remember.  Means licence fee payers cash gets handed over to for-profit companies/spent more efficiently depending on how you see it.

Is this show live? As I am pretty sure Claudia usually pre-records it.

Which actually puts you in the strange situation where Claudia doesn’t do her pre-recorded Radio 2 show for 3 months a year because she’s on BBC One pre-recorded for Strictly results on a Sunday evening.

It’s live with Scott, you can hear through the interaction and how he plays in pre rec bits.

  • 1 month later...

Bloomin loving the Sunday evening show. Reminds me of why I fell in love with radio in the first place he's playing the music from my youth and great listener interaction old school Mills. I can see within the next year or so R2 will become his more permanent home. Maybe keep the Chart Show like Mark Goodyear did back in the day once a week fix of Mills with his long association with the Chart show. Also the problem of what to do with Chris is now fixed with the 5Live gig I'm sure if there own show doesn't become a hit Stark could find a place on the 5Live schedule. Interesting future lies ahead.

    • Jordan North… Seriously though, out of the commercial stations I only really listen to Capital but I do think Will Manning is very strong (and could quite easily slot into R1). I also think Jimmy Hill is a very good commercial DJ (but probably wouldn’t be as good on R1).
    • First link made me blush
    • Who do you think is the best commercial presenter? This is your view, doesn't have to be who has the most ratings
    • Starting off strong.
    • I remember Chase and Status being added to the line-up for Coventry after a drop out. At the time it seemed a bit random, but they seem massive again now!
    • That is a bit strange, yes. Fair point. Oh yes, I'd say both are equal. It's just they'll have been on Instagram for some time, whereas TikTok will have been a new addition in recent years, so something probably has to give. Us anoraks like to see Twitter as important, but I find myself putting much more time into those other platforms. Incidentally when I applied for a social job there probably four years back (wasn't successful!) I did say I thought the audience wanted more insight from the station rather than just content around the stars. I think they've moved a lot more in that direction, especially with the visualisation in the studio. You see more of Greg James than Harry Styles. I don't envy the PR machine at Radio 1 going straight from Mollie King's challenge to Big Weekend announcements without a break!
    • Since they starting the big weekend right at the end of Matt & Mollie’s show I expect they get to do the duties of opening up the festival.
    • Matt and Mollie and Sam and Danni have DJ sets on Friday of Big Weekend, still makes me think they are really keen to push both pairings in a hole left by Jordan.
    • Broadcast wise it’s going to be interesting to see how they handle the performances starting at the same time as the chart show.
    • Yes sort of, although it’s still weird that they tweeted when Mollie was halfway completed but did not do so when she crossed the finish line.
    • it would make sense to ensure both instagram and TikTok are treated as equals and kept in tandem as reels and downloads of instagram are growing when TikTok I think I’ve heard is stagnating.    I mean it makes sense to do less with Twitter or X as it has change. There has been a lot of change in how its run and operate with focus on making it a platform people pay for and its been volatile for advertising with lots of loss in paid promotions on the platform and the business worth has been waining and any communications and marketing for any business and organisations are seeing that
    • I feel like all ATB songs started with some sort of airport in their video
    • Brings back some memories. Your Call for the second hour between 5 and 5.45! The disappointment when someone would call in asking for James Blunt which was already on the playlist.
    • Previously during Red Nose Day events or summer games they tweeted more than now. This year they tweeted less but still highlighted lots of tweets from listeners on the R1 live blog.
