Favourite Radio 1 Presenters

Past or present, Whooooo’s your favourite Radio 1 presenter? Is there anyone you would love to hear back on the airwaves?

For me one of my favourite radio presenters of all time, Quite controversy is Chris Moyles. I’ve always loved the laid back format of his show. In a fictional world, I’d love to see Chris do a nighttime show on Radio 1.

My favourite radio 1 presenters at the minute are of course the big man himself Scott. Jordon North- So underappticted by the BBC just stuck on a Sunday show. Arielle Free( technically not an official presenter...) Whenever she’s on, it’s great. I really love her   Enthusiasm, she’s full of high energy always. She needs to be singed soon otherwise I’m sure she’ll get poached by Global or Bauer for our show! Greg James- He’s got a lot better after his holdiay. His breakfast show is one of the few good ones left in my opinion

Scott and Chris obvs, but yes I agree Chris Moyles was fantastic. I’d like to hear Matt Edmondson go back to his old late night slot with the risky themes - his late night interview with Ross Kemp was hilarious!  Also, the big man Charlie Sloth. Shame he lost it at those awards. I didn’t listen to his show but he was funny when he came on Scots show: You’re fattest, no, your fattest!!

Current I would have to say Dev and Alice together. They work so well off each other and their show often sounds quite different to anything you’d hear anywhere else.

In the past I would also have to say Moyles although I only starting to listen to R1 about a year before he left so I didn’t get the ‘golden years’ of him!

Scott of course and Chris has revitalized his show

Moyles from yesteryear - I would also say Sara as well in her later years at R1

Currently Dev and Alice are upping their game and I really like the new three from Kiss they've fitted in really well and I'd take a punt that it won't be too long until they appear on daytime

Suprised by the fact non's mentioned the big man himself Zane Lowe. His show when i listened was always great. Mind you his format on beats 1 is a lot more new music heavy.

I picked up Radio 1 about 2005-2006 time. Then found it again years later in 2017- Around the time of their 50th birthday celebration.

Dev and Alice are great together. Its not fake, it seems they generally get on and they have the same sense of humour which boosts the show greatly

Has anyone noticed recently how Scott Mills is more open on air about his sexuality? For years he used to say that he “doesn’t have much luck with the ladies.” But now now he sometimes mentions his boyfriend and I think it’s great how he doesn’t hold back like has has done over the years. Everyone knows Scott is gay and when he revealed it many years ago, it didn’t change a thing for him working at Radio 1.

Good on him. ?

Hadn’t noticed it, but now you say it, he has started being more open about his life.  As you say, good on him ?.

I suppose there’s quite a few LGBT ?️‍? djs on radio 1 now like Grimmy and Adele Roberts as well, all on daytime! So that could be more comforting to Scott?

Maybe, although I do wonder if it’s more a case of everyone being more open about these things in 2019, compared to when Scott started in the late 90s, and I think he feels much more comfortable and himself on air these days.

    • To give Dance Anthems some credit the 'Classic Anthems' do these days seem to have some fairly recent tracks from the last 2-3 years thrown in. I do think dance they can get away with a bit more as tracks from 10-25 years ago seem to be pretty timeless and as popular as ever. Though having more 'Classic' Anthems than current anthems on Dance Anthems does seem a bit for a supposed new music station. It wasn't a criticism of any of those specific artists to be clear. More just that it's as if Radio 1 just pick particular artists as their chosen ones whose new songs will always make the playlist come what may (which often includes those mentioned) while others while they get 'off peak' play never come close to the playlist even if the music absolutely fits Radio 1 and has an organic popularity. Absolutely get them wanting to champion new music but often they only really do it to a certain point and with certain artists.
    • But he is posh, the opposite to Jordan. Not down to earth. You’re right, the show does play on it. If I’m honest, I stopped listening to Going Home, the day Laing started. Sam and Danni were better. 😂
    • It’s not necessarily the fact that Jamie is posh. It’s that the show seems to be really keen to play on it. Within 10 minutes of their first show they were playing voice notes from his Celeb mates. Compare that to Vick and Jordan’s first week in September 2021; their first links were about Jordan’s awkward encounter with his plumber and Vick slapping a roast chicken.    And then on Monday this week, Jamie is sulking (exaggerated sulking admittedly) about something, this ultimately being that another of his celeb mates has cancelled his appearance on their show, and they’re literally reading out texts such as ‘I’m sure this is going to be relatable to the entire population.’
    • That’s a last minute change!
    • Jordan, Greg, they’re down to earth. That’s what makes them resonate so much with listeners.
    • It's a bizarre thing though....it would be nice to hear a few more tracks from the past 10 years mixed into daytime. However, at the other extreme, I find it odd how often really old tracks come up on Anthems and even the likes of Soundsystem Party and Dance Anthems.   The odd throwback is great but sometimes it feels too much.
    • I do like Cat Burns but it’s a good point about the many artists on future artists and other specialist shows. If they manage to launch the ‘Anthems’ like sister station hope they make changes to the stations playlist.
    • Some shows do play some songs from pre-2018 regularly. Mainly Matt & Mollie and Radio 1 Breakfast. Also don't forget the shortened Anne-Marie - Ciao Adios which gets played every 26 seconds. 😂
    • I hate reverse snobbery and I post this reluctantly as we shouldn't hold Jamie's background against him, but I do think many listeners will find it hard to identify with Jamie.  One of the things that made Jordan so popular was he sounded like the mate you go for a pint with who always has a great story to tell.
    • Absolutely - life would be dull if we all liked the same things
    • Dean in for Greg on Tuesday.
    • While it maybe doesn't the power it once has (where being on the A-List was a big deal), It's a big part of the station and I felt probably deserves it's own thread. Have to be honest I haven't been hugely enamored with the playlist in recent times. Radio 1 seem quite heavily wedded to it in weekdays (at least Monday-Thursday) which can lead to the station being repetitive if you listen throughout the day. Even a station like Capital who are known for their limited playlist seem to throw in some older tracks and artists ever so often whereas if it's not Something Songs, 10 Minute Takeover or Anthems you often struggle to hear a song from before 2018. The repetitive nature has been a thing for a while though to be fair - I recall early 2021 in particular it felt like Tiesto's 'The Business' and Olivia Rodrigo's 'Drivers Licence' were played every other hour. Also certain Radio 1 favourites seem almost guaranteed a slot on the playlist even if they don't actually appear to be wildly popular with the target audience to justify it. I get it with your Dua Lipas, Calvin Harrises, Fred Agains  and Olivia Rodrigos as they're all very popular but less so if it's say Cat Burns, Aitch, Royal Blood or Mabel. Which is fine to an extent as Radio 1 has often focussed on promoting new music but then you have great music by other new artists that just never makes it to the playlist as a result.
    • Yep I really struggled with Matt & Jamie which was a shame as otherwise really like Matt. Unfortunately it comes across on-air whether it's actually try or not that Jamie doesn't know a lot about radio and doesn't seem particularly desperate to improve either or if I'm being generous he's playing an act - neither of which particularly appeals. The everyman act can sometimes work but you need to have that natural likability and appeal for it to do so in the way that way Chris Stark did. I mean even towards the end of his stint with Matt Jamie was struggling with getting the Whatsapp number right which is a basic.
    • Have to say even if there is a good reason for Jamie to be off on Thursdays the optics of them a month in still not be able to do a 'normal week' of the scheduled team for a brand new show isn't great. And if Jamie was meant to be away on Thursdays clearly nobody let whoever runs BBC Sounds know. Who would've guessed from the Vick & Jordan days though that it would be Vick who's the everpresent so far (just kidding Vick - really rate her as a DJ and I know she has a lot of other engagements outside of Radio 1).
    • Sorry explain what you mean there please? Danny is unlistenable??
