Fantasy Christmas Schedule 2018

Almost time people it's creeping up and every year when I purchase my Radio Times Christmas mega mag (only time I ever by a tv mag) I always check who's on R1 over telly instead.

So this year has the potential to be quite different as for some reason I feel Scott is about to make the switch to R2 with the Evans situation. So it could look as follows:

Christmas Eve

4-6.30 Adele

6.30-10 Radio 1 Breakfast with Greg James Live

10-1 Clara Amfo

1-4 Matt and Mollie

4-7 Dev and Alice

Christmas Day

4-6 Adele Live

6-10 Radio 1 Breakfast with Greg James Live Please I hope he gets it back he loved doing this show a few years back.

10-7 Pre recorded stuff normally Artist Takeover?

7-10 Radio 1 Movie Show With Ali Plumb looking back at 2018.

Boxing Day

4-6.30 Adele

6.30-10 Jordan

10-1 Clara on tape

1-4 Matt and Mollie maybe live?

4-7 Dev and Alice again maybe live?

7-10 Movies with Ali Plumb looking forward to 2019.

Thursday 28th

Same as before only difference being 7-10 will be Annie Mac highlights.

Friday 29th

6-10 either Katie & Cel or Will &Ariel

10-1 Maya Jama

1-4 Jordan

4-7 Chart Of The Year with Scott

Saturday and Sunday only difference being 4-7 Dance Anthems on the Sat Life Hacks on the Sunday

New Year's Eve

4-6.30 Will Best

6.30-10 Jordan

10-1 Nope sorry not sure here?

1-4 Matt and Mollie

4-7 Dev

7-1 Jordan's New Year's Eve BANGERS this was great last year.

New Year's Day

4-6.30 Will Best

6.30-10 Jordan

10-1 It's still open for debate

1-4 Arielle Free

4-7 Dev.

WHAT do you lovely lot reckon?

Hopefully we'll see the return of Greg's Christmas Day breakfast show - that was always something I looked forward to. I reckon we'll be hearing a lot of Jordan North again, Scott on breakfast for at least some of the time and maybe a bit of Dev and Jack Saunders. I doubt Alice would agree to work over the Christmas period though. Or Maya Jama. Maybe Molly King would though - that would be interesting. Arielle Free will probably pop up a fair amount, and maybe Will Best as well. I'd like to see someone from commercial radio get a shot at doing some early breakfast cover over the festivities - I'm a big fan of James Hall and I think Radio 1 would be fools not to sign him up. But that's a long shot.

I agree James Hall would be a good signing! I would love to see Jack Saunders on daytimes on the week between Xmas and New Year. I'm not that keen on Will Best but love Arielle Free and also enjoy Luke Franks so fingers crossed he covers again this year.

Also agree re. James hall, just listened to a bit of his capital shows from last week, and  he’s really good at getting his personality through despite the short links

I can't see them splitting Matt & Mollie up. I think they will both be on together quite a bit I we Christmas but not separately.

I'll probably be wrong though!

A few things that may happen.

Firstly Greg has worked flat out since he started other than the Monday off for his wedding which probably means he will finish for the year on the 20th. (I hope I'm wrong)

Secondly with Dev moving across to weekend afternoon's with Alice I can see him covering over the festive period but not the same amount we usually see and not breakfast that will go to the likes of Jordan.

Also Matt and Mollie will be on a lot don't think they will do Mollie on her own just yet?

One over was it my imagination or was Jordan live 4-7 Christmas Day last year?

So the first few point she of interest have been revealed in relation to Christmas from the BBCs Christmas Radio Highlights press pack. These are:

• Scott Mills will be hosting the Christmas Official Chart on Friday 21st (not unexpected)

• There will be a Ten Hour Takeover on Christmas Eve hosted by Scott and Chris (6:30 - 10), Clara Amfo (10 - 1), Arielle Free (1 - 4) and Jordan North (4 - 7). Surprised to see that Clara seems to be working over the Xmas period.

• Scott Mills will be Live on Christmas Day (6:30 - 10) as well as Jordan North (4-7). Annie Mac, The 8th and Jack Saunders Christmas specials follow this. Seems to be same schedule as last year?

• Boxing Day will have the best Live Lounge replays all day.

• Friday 28th will have the chart of the year from 1 - 6. This will be hosted by Alice and Dev (1-4) and Scott Mills (4-6)

• On New Years Eve, Arielle Free will be hosting from 5 - 9 and then Jordan North will be taking over.

From this, I’m guessing that both Arielle and Jordan will be working a lot over Christmas. Also surprised that Alice and Clara are working as they normally take Christmas off!

    • But he is posh, the opposite to Jordan. Not down to earth. You’re right, the show does play on it. If I’m honest, I stopped listening to Going Home, the day Laing started. Sam and Danni were better. 😂
    • It’s not necessarily the fact that Jamie is posh. It’s that the show seems to be really keen to play on it. Within 10 minutes of their first show they were playing voice notes from his Celeb mates. Compare that to Vick and Jordan’s first week in September 2021; their first links were about Jordan’s awkward encounter with his plumber and Vick slapping a roast chicken.    And then on Monday this week, Jamie is sulking (exaggerated sulking admittedly) about something, this ultimately being that another of his celeb mates has cancelled his appearance on their show, and they’re literally reading out texts such as ‘I’m sure this is going to be relatable to the entire population.’
    • That’s a last minute change!
    • Jordan, Greg, they’re down to earth. That’s what makes them resonate so much with listeners.
    • It's a bizarre thing though....it would be nice to hear a few more tracks from the past 10 years mixed into daytime. However, at the other extreme, I find it odd how often really old tracks come up on Anthems and even the likes of Soundsystem Party and Dance Anthems.   The odd throwback is great but sometimes it feels too much.
    • I do like Cat Burns but it’s a good point about the many artists on future artists and other specialist shows. If they manage to launch the ‘Anthems’ like sister station hope they make changes to the stations playlist.
    • Some shows do play some songs from pre-2018 regularly. Mainly Matt & Mollie and Radio 1 Breakfast. Also don't forget the shortened Anne-Marie - Ciao Adios which gets played every 26 seconds. 😂
    • I hate reverse snobbery and I post this reluctantly as we shouldn't hold Jamie's background against him, but I do think many listeners will find it hard to identify with Jamie.  One of the things that made Jordan so popular was he sounded like the mate you go for a pint with who always has a great story to tell.
    • Absolutely - life would be dull if we all liked the same things
    • Dean in for Greg on Tuesday.
    • While it maybe doesn't the power it once has (where being on the A-List was a big deal), It's a big part of the station and I felt probably deserves it's own thread. Have to be honest I haven't been hugely enamored with the playlist in recent times. Radio 1 seem quite heavily wedded to it in weekdays (at least Monday-Thursday) which can lead to the station being repetitive if you listen throughout the day. Even a station like Capital who are known for their limited playlist seem to throw in some older tracks and artists ever so often whereas if it's not Something Songs, 10 Minute Takeover or Anthems you often struggle to hear a song from before 2018. The repetitive nature has been a thing for a while though to be fair - I recall early 2021 in particular it felt like Tiesto's 'The Business' and Olivia Rodrigo's 'Drivers Licence' were played every other hour. Also certain Radio 1 favourites seem almost guaranteed a slot on the playlist even if they don't actually appear to be wildly popular with the target audience to justify it. I get it with your Dua Lipas, Calvin Harrises, Fred Agains  and Olivia Rodrigos as they're all very popular but less so if it's say Cat Burns, Aitch, Royal Blood or Mabel. Which is fine to an extent as Radio 1 has often focussed on promoting new music but then you have great music by other new artists that just never makes it to the playlist as a result.
    • Yep I really struggled with Matt & Jamie which was a shame as otherwise really like Matt. Unfortunately it comes across on-air whether it's actually try or not that Jamie doesn't know a lot about radio and doesn't seem particularly desperate to improve either or if I'm being generous he's playing an act - neither of which particularly appeals. The everyman act can sometimes work but you need to have that natural likability and appeal for it to do so in the way that way Chris Stark did. I mean even towards the end of his stint with Matt Jamie was struggling with getting the Whatsapp number right which is a basic.
    • Have to say even if there is a good reason for Jamie to be off on Thursdays the optics of them a month in still not be able to do a 'normal week' of the scheduled team for a brand new show isn't great. And if Jamie was meant to be away on Thursdays clearly nobody let whoever runs BBC Sounds know. Who would've guessed from the Vick & Jordan days though that it would be Vick who's the everpresent so far (just kidding Vick - really rate her as a DJ and I know she has a lot of other engagements outside of Radio 1).
    • Sorry explain what you mean there please? Danny is unlistenable??
