Age Range of R1 DJs VS Listeners

Hi guys, first post here, hope it's a friendly community :)

Do you think the age of the R1 DJs and the audience is out of whack? Sometimes I feel like I'm listening to Radio 2 when they're chatting between songs. What's the average age of R1 presenters? Are most R1 DJs eventually put at R2 to paster or have some done other stuff, i.e. got big in TV presenting.

Sorry if this is a n00b question, I'm from Ohio and have only been here long enough to find the radio station I want to listen to while studying!

Welcome, we're lovely! Mostly.

I don't think Radio 1 sounds particularly old at the moment actually, certainly not compared to six or seven years ago. There was a conscious drive to make Radio 1 sound "younger" from around 2012, older DJs were demoted and left. The main presenters at the moment are on the slightly older side - Adele's 39, Grimmy's 33, Clara's 34, Scott's 44, Greg's 32, Dev's 33, Alice is 31 and Matt's 32. But I've never felt that as a 19 year old the stuff they talk about is uninteresting and irrelevant to my life. And it's certainly VERY different to what you'd hear from Steve Wright or Ken Bruce on Radio 2.

Some end up at Radio 2, some don't. At the moment Radio 2 has a lot of bedblockers - people who were on Radio 1 in the 80s and 90s who have been on Radio 2 for ages as well with no likelihood of them leaving anytime soon. So there's a bit of a waiting list - Sara Cox moved directly from 1 to 2 in 2014 and has only just been given a daily show, Jo Whiley got a daily show pretty much straight away, and Scott's starting to pick up a few shifts there as well. But other ex-R1 DJs never made it across - Moyles hasn't yet and might never, Edith Bowman didn't, Vernon Kay, Reggie Yates etc. It's not a guaranteed thing, but it happens for most if they wait it out.

I’m 30 so I’m bad for radio 1!!

but I can’t stomach radio 2 - at all!

I'm 38 and love R1 still

Hi and Welcome

I have listened to R2 recently as well but Ken and Steve Wright sound so old, like Sara Cox on breakfast when she covers

R1 presenters are great as they are in touch with all listeners, and their shows suit such I think

And considering they have just given 32 year old Greg the breakfast show says allot, replacing a 32 for a 32

When Moyles left he was 38 and it was said at the time had he been replaced with 37 year old Mills at the time, it would have been like for like, so they replaced him with 27 year old Grimshaw, so the ageist thing has gone and I think an element of it all is Aled Jones's input

    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
    • Just watched that advert and it made me realise quite how many 'big' specialist presenters there were back then
    • I've been reminded of this Radio 1 cinema advert. I remember being so excited to see it. The In New Music We Trust era. Everything felt so cool, even if they had Westwood.
    • Just Vick and Katie on Wednesday (and presumably Thursday as well).
    • Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false.   Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global?  He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC.  Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful?   It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going.  Roman and Jordan have the same management team.  Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC.  They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer.  They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him.  If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker.  Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan.  None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones.  It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.
    • Wow, surprised he signed a new contract in September but it says a lot about Jordan that he continued to a very high standard throughout last summer/autumn if this was all going on in the background.
