Radio 1 Schedule Changes

Adele in for Maya on Saturday as already said.

Matt is also in for Scott on Friday which is slightly confusing as I don’t know why Maya can’t host by herself.

On the 4th May, Danny is in for Annie. Not sure yet who’s in for him.

On the 5th and 6th, Katie Thistleton is in for Maya and Jordan, doing both the Greatest Hits Shows with Jordan in for Matt all weekend. At the moment, Katie is also doing Life Hacks but I’m sure that will change.

And finally, Jordan is in for Greg on the 7th May.

Does anyone know why Maya doesn’t cover for anyone else but Jordan covers loads? Not that I’m complaining, I much prefer Jordan but I find it slightly strange how she’s not covering at all and yet she’s getting the extra show?

I can only think and I'm not being rude but I don't think she is good enough to host anything but greatest hits I Wodnt be suprised if next Feb when her contract is up she leaves radio 1

In some ways, she isn't even good enough to host greatest hits!

Yeah, I wonder that too especially as up until a couple of days ago, she was meant to be on the radio this weekend. It seems like she’s in Italy now though.

Also, Matt is in for Scott all week from the 7th to the 11th of May. That may explain why Scott isn’t doing breakfast on Friday 11th with Dev and Alice doing it instead.

Might be Scott's first holiday of the summer season

It's about time Scott and Chris did a couple weeks on breakfast (maybe June for this)

I'm wondering if Scott will now start the transition to R2, doing cover shows there like Sara Cox did at first

Wow, Annie's just announced that she won't be there for three weeks and that the show will be taken over by some artists (Stefflon Don, Bastille and Blossoms), supported by R1 DJs: Dotty, Grimmy and Clara. Each of the duo (artist + DJ) will be taking over the whole week.
Should be interesting...

I didn’t get to hear this, do we know when?

I didn't hear the announcement go out on air, but I presume it coincides with Annie's summer AMP tour?

Yesterday grimmy  was talking about how if he won the lottery he’d take a year off and then come back and ‘be Annie mac’ so he could have full day free do radio then go out.  I know mostly in jest although Seemed an odd thing for a breakfast host to say - that given the choice they’d not do breakfast - the main show. He’s obviously known that he would be covering for Annie soon when he said this but this and the schedule changes amongst other things show it’s more obvious now than ever grimmy is getting sidelined and not the main attraction he once was

And what with all the other stuff going on at R1 at the moment

To me Scott suddenly has become important again, instead of being "just the guy who does afternoons" who was sidelined from drive

I do wonder if something will happen soon that will see Scott get breakfast?

I didn't catch the full announcement, but now I've listened back to the beginning of yesterday's show and Annie said "I'm gonna be away for the next three weeks". It doesn't start next week according to R1 schedule, but as it's supposed to be a build up for The Biggest Weekend, I reckon it'll start on the 7th of May and continue till the event itself.

Ooh, interesting - it'll be quite nice to hear Grimmy back doing a specialist show, it's always been where he's seemed more comfortable. We'll probably get Adele in for Clara and Jordan in for Adele, or just Jordan in for Clara that week as well.

Fully agree with you on that. Grimmy's been paired with Bastille and I remember from 2 years back now, when Dan came to co-host the show with him and Craig David, that Grimmy was much much better than usual. So fingers crossed, it'll be nice to listen to. As for Dotty - I don't listen to her show, so don't know what to expect. Clara - well, I'm not a fan of her. She's good technically (when to press the buttons and all that staff), but she's also a tad boring. But then again, she might do well in this different format (she got Blossoms).

And Chris won't be involved in the chart. There's no mention of him at all in the press release and it's very clearly Scott's gig. The chart wouldn't work with Chris as a sidekick anyway in my opinion

Bit late to this bandwagon, I remember when Scott used to cover for JK and Joel on the chart, he used to have Chappers with him and they sounded great on the chart together, so maybe there is space for Chris?

I heard a bit of Adele Roberts in for Maya Jama this weekend and really liked what I heard - she'd moved some of her features into the Greatest Hits show and I have to say, it made it a much better show than what the Greatest Hits show normally is on a Saturday. It's easy to forget how listenable and capable Adele is as a broadcaster, she deserves a day time slot really.

Bit of a pipe dream, but maybe there would be room if Greg, Chris, Chris and Grace went to breakfast as a more zoo format show, Scott and Chris to drive, and Adele 1 till 4?

Also, hi everyone (long time lurker, first time poster - WhooooOOOOOOOOOooo)!

I’ve just had a thought as well, since Aled is now the head of programmes at R1 and he seems to like making shows into zoo formats eg, Charlie Sloth, Matt and Mollie, Alice and Dev, then maybe as Greg’s show would work very well as a zoo format with Greg, Chris, Chris and Grace because they all bounce off each other so well, he might get breakfast. It may be just a dream but Gregs Show is sounding better than ever right now.

Also, relating to that slightly, I’m not sure why Aled hasn’t changed Grimmys show at all really since he’s come in with changes happening to lots of other shows. I can only image that it’s because he’s coming off their soon. But again that maybe wishful thinking.

Adele on Saturday really showed up how rubbish Maya really is. I dread to think what she will be like on an entertainment show that’s less music based. Ooh that’s so vibes. Keep vibing. Ooh I can sing. Here’s Newsbeat with the wrong presenter. Ooh woops I’ve talked over the song :D:D

I think Greg could work on breakfast with his team if they were allowed to develop their own features and bring their existing chemistry over - if they had to continue with the same old celebrity interviews of Rita Ora/Keith Lemon/Paddy McGuinness that were cut up with too much music, it would be a massive waste of Greg and his team. Greg would work with more freedom for longer links and less reliance on 'big names' etc., unless that's just my age showing through!

I agree they rely to much on guests grimmmy doesn't have a good enough team around him and plays way to much music, moyles on radio x hardly plays any music and manages a 3 and a half hour show 5 days a week, also on a side  note moyles is treated far better at x than radio 1 he has twice as many holidays as grimmmy

Welcome along! Big fan of the name - which in itself is a massive WHOOO.

Adele's really grown on me recently actually, I always thought she was technically very good and a very capable pair of hands, as well as admiring the way she worked her way up through the commercial radio ranks, but never thought she was in the same league as Mills or Greg. She's still not quite up there, but the way she presented the Gregathlon shows, with so much warmth, empathy and good humour showed what a good broadcaster she is and changed my opinion of her for the better. And it goes without saying, a million times better than Maya Jama.

A Greg James breakfast show, with Chris Smith as the number two would just be perfection. As would a Mills breakfast show. It's a tragedy that the best two broadcasters on Radio 1 are stuck in afternoon slots because the current breakfast show presenter is there being a bed blocker so Ben Cooper can prove a point. I've always thought of Greg's podcast as a sampler of what a Greg James breakfast show would sound like, if it ever came into existence. I'm still hopeful, but it's probably not so likely. If it was going to happen, it probably would've happened in 2015.

    • I would argue against that, I once drove my car into a post listening to Scott Mills.  But it was back in the day, he was doing Stupid Street with Chappers at the time!
    • My perspective when saying ‘alienating’  was from a listener , a new listener to a new music show where every track is unfamiliar can be alienating. When I used to run a music blog website and took my eye off the ball it could be hard to get finger back on pulse. I remember first listening to after 7pm on radio 1 and it feeling like a different world of music completely as a teenager- I think this format knocks them barriers down and makes a smooth transition from daytime playlists to new music show  taking listener deeper down as show progresses yeah you are bang on with setting the agenda - what a great influential role to have
    • Fair play to Jordan north who’s got himself to 5th least distracting, but Greg has managed 8th MOST distracting, and Rickie who is 12th most distracting.
    • 29th April has Alyx Holcombe in for Daniel P Carter on the Rock show and Nels Hylton in for Alyx on Introducing Rock. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday 6th May (May Day Bank Holiday) schedules are completely different. Looks like it's a Countdown to Radio 1's Big Weekend day. Changed timeslots in the morning as well with no presenters listed. 6am-10am (Breakfast slot changed from 7am-10:30am) 10am-1pm (Mid morning/early afternoon slot changed from 10:30-12:45pm) 1pm-3:30pm (As normal) 3:30pm-6pm (No Newsbeat) 6pm-8pm (Replaces New Music Show) Rest of evening schedule as normal.
    • What does that even mean? 😂
    • Not sure what it really means, but Scott Mills is one of the least distracting DJs according to new research. https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-13283609/Most-distracting-radio-podcast-hosts-driving-revealed-Mark-Wright-Chris-Evans-list.html It says Radio 1 though, which is not only inaccurate, but also I can only imagine it applying to his Radio 2 show. How many sounds effects did he used to play on Radio 1, ha.
    • I would rather do the new music show than the breakfast show early starts, being cheery and entertaining isn’t my vibe and being hip and on trend. With new music it’s a different kettle of fish that could get my teeth into and enjoy researching and planning of the show and coming up with ideas and making my mark in away that I don’t think I have the ideas for a breakfast. I don’t see how it could be alienating but I enjoy the niche and speciality of expertise that new music shows gives it’s good spot of giving you the headlines and setting the agenda of mainstream music.
    • Absolutely, Jack is such an incredible broadcaster already, incredibly entertaining with such brilliant music knowledge and his excitement is contagious, I've never really listened to New Music Shows like Future Sounds but I'm instantly invested in new music due to his show, as I'm sure many others are too.  yes the effects are a little strange but after listening back they're strangely charming when you get used to them.
    • Jack has smashed it He was born for this show, he said he’d been dreaming of it and you could tell. Such passion and energy as always with Jack but in a show that can grab people’s attention and drag them down the rabbit hole of new music if you had a keen interest in discovering new music but haven’t in a while, new music shows can be alienating with no familiarity until you ‘get into it’ - the new show has ensured you can ease into to get back into sync . i love the Zane influences - he will be the forefront of where every emerging and returning artist wants to be with this show . Very excited for this chapter
    • Oh I though they were nbh studios
    • Yes, I feel that unless it’s for a special sessions with a large ensemble band that for live sessions going out live on the radio. Never saw why they haven’t used the live lounge studio and feel that room could be used more.
    • Interesting now Zane has for apple interviewed anything from an artists that have charted and doing less interviews with new and emerging talents chatting to Shakira, Usher, Kelly Clarkson and Shania Twain. Yes, that is a positive thing about Jack Saunders. Although I don’t mind it from time to time for a presenter to be honest and spill an unsavoury opinion about music on the station like Annie did with Fall Out Boy.
    • Interesting Jack mentioned they've got new studios at Maida Vale; you'd think, with the move to Stratford, they wouldn't bother update the studios so close to the end...
    • I assume it's meant to appeal to a TikTok generation
