Radio 1 Schedule Changes

Getting known names on weekend presenting roles is nothing new although I think this monthly double act with Matt is a good way of radio 1 seeing what known names also make good radio presenters and how the audience warm to them through these taster shows. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see one of the names lined up to present with Matt his year,  getting their own show in the future.

Maya's link into the news just now:

HAIM - The Wire is interrupted before the end with the news jingle. No comment from Maya. No back announcement of the song. A few seconds of the news jingle. She eventually speaks and says "it's time for Newsbeat with Hannah Morris".

So not only did she screw up the backtiming, crash the song with the news jingle and forget to announce the name of the song or trail ahead - she managed to get the name of the newsreader - the same newsreader she's already introduced twice today without incident - wrong.

I've gotta stop posting about Maya Jama. It's a problem. Promise this is the last one. It was just quite funny.

It's Molly King's last show with Matt today (shame), he just said that it's Example from next week. Wasn't it supposed to be Scarlett Moffatt next? I think she's doing a show on Heart over the bank holiday weekend, so maybe that's got something to do with it?

Delighted to see Jordan covering Greg. Long over-due. Him and Alice are just a million times more entertaining than Dev.

Have to agree Jordan has brought some fresh energy into covering Greg's show and is more in tune with the usual style of programme.

I think Jordan may well take breakfast once grimmmy leaves

This would be good but surely he's too much of an unknown and it's probably too early in his career. Although I'm assuming Grimmy goes some time soon. He could still be around for Radio 1's 100th birthday.

Phil Taggart also sounding good in for Annie Mac tonight :)

I'm glad he seems to be out of the cold at last.

Right, this is very random but I was thinking earlier that since the rest of the weekend schedule has had a refresh, I think the Sunday evening one really needs one so I think it really should be like this:

4:00 Life Hacks with Katie and Dr Radha (continues until 7, get rid of the awful Most Played Chart and also get rid of Cel)

7:00 Radio 1’s best of the week with Scott Mills (would also be like a request show type thing, could then get rid of the Greatest Hits show as they would be on this show)

9:00 Rock Show (Doesn’t need to be in such a prominent slot and doesn’t need to be as long)

11:00 Phil Taggart (Like his show currently is, just slightly shorter)

This would also line up with the rest of the week. Any suggestions welcome?

What I’d do is give Jordan North both Greatest Hits shows, and move Maya Jama to a new Sunday 7-9 slot. Totally agree with you about making the rock show 9-11 and Phil Taggart 11-1.

It’s got to the point where it seems as though Phil doesn’t really know what to do with the last hour of the show. When he first took the show over the last hour was mellow music like the first two hours. But then around the time he lost his old Thursday 9-10 show the last hour of the Sunday one just strangely derailed into rock and alternative which really didn’t seem appropriate under the title “The chillest show on planet Earth”. I can only assume that move was to compensate for his lost airtime on a Thursday where he’d normally have played that music, because when the Specialist Chart came into existence last year the final hour returned to something of a more mellow theme, albeit not quite as much as 10-midnight.

Jordan North is in for Greg this Friday for the chart and dance anthems. MistaJam must be busy!

Awesome!  Seems Jordan is the new go to drive time stand in, can only see more of this coming when new schedule takes effect.

I hope so, Dev is boring. Jordan did the end of year chart as well so at least he has done it before!

Whats suprising about this is that Scott is not filling in now hes the new host - and Jordan doing his show or earlies to allow Adele to do 1-4

Now that the changes have been announced, perhaps they want to keep Scott off the chart until he officially takes over. He'll probably have some new imaging to play with too, which will be a shame as I like the current chart imaging.

    • Jesus christ, Olivia Rodrigo was around 3 years ago!?! I thought she was only born in 2019. Anyway. They are doing it to rival commercial networks, on the main 2 lists anyway with rotating them more. Which all in all is a pit of misery. I'm sick to bloody death of Stick Season, it's an utter bag of mediocre wank that makes me even prefer James Blunt circa 2005. Radio 1 still is more expansive however, loved stuff they play and make their own early days, like Jungle Back on 74 like last year.  They can't lose doing stuff that, or else they become bland like everyone else. They have done that for many years though. I heard a song on a March 2001 aircheck from Chris Moyles recently and rediscovered a song by Kings Of Convenience, called Toxic Girl. Totally lost over 25 years but totally love it like it's new. Radio 1 has always played the big time pop stuff since your nan was 3. But they always have and still do throw something on the playlists that isn't what everyone else has. I hope they continue to do that as it sets them apart.
    • I think they are looking too much into this and need to get a proper job where you have to get up at 5am.
    • Zayn's current song isn't on the R1 playlist so would be odd for him to do an interview I guess, not sure either would want it?
    • You have both presented together before your show on Capital. Have you spent time together as friends since, or is the reunion like getting to know one another all over again?   I’m a long time listener in my mid 30s and now outside the R1 target audience age… Chris is into barbecuing and Jordan is into air frying, have you both noticed a change in the other since the days of R1? And are you under any pressure to be on trend at Capital?
    • What do you both miss most about your time at R1?
    • How are you finding the early mornings, and having your afternoons free? Was it easy getting to grips with a different desk and play out system? Do you have any upcoming OBs and anything else exciting planned for the show that you can exclusively share with Unofficialmills? 😀
    • This research is based on the DJs’ voices - pitches, speech rates and fillers like ums and ahs they use - so it’s not affected by sound effects. But yes according to the report Scott is listed as a Radio 2 DJ instead of Radio 1.
    • The playlist has definitely got a bit narrower this year, it feels like. Artists like Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Drake and  Doja Cat seem to be played in every show, even when they’re not on the playlist. Other artists who get a few plays a week, such as Niall Horan, always seem to have the same song played, in his case, Heaven. Whenever they dive into Calvin Harris’ backlog it always seems to be Slide and Promises pulled out, even though they’re two of his least upbeat songs. Most songs they play seem to have been from the 2020s, instead of throwing in a few older hits like Capital does, which is something I think they could do.
    • Jamie Laing out of the schedule for Going Home today - Lauren Layfield in with Katie Thistleton.
    • Bit of a scoop getting an exclusive interview with Zayn, I wonder why he decided not to do Radio 1 too?
    • Who are your favourite artists that are not anywhere close to being on the playlist?   Are there ever songs that make you want to start pulling your hair out (in general, no need to put anyone on blast lol)?
    • Hi to both, miss you loads on radio 1 and hope that you’re doing good at capital 🙏   What was the background to your exits from Radio 1? Do you have any regrets from how it ended?    This one’s more to Jordan, but do you enjoy TV presenting more than radio? What are your targets in TV?
    • I do think if you distracted by talking you wouldn’t put a podcast on in the car. To me unless you used to driving so often that you don’t get distracted and drive for long distances it feels suited to podcasts. I find it odd including Ryan Seacrest or Howard Stern as I don’t know who listens to them in the U.K. Can imagine Chris Evans distracting and annoying on radio in general same for Chris Moyles. I can imagine Scott as not too distracting maybe even in his radio 1 days although if I was a driver I could find Innuendo Bingo or Funny Business distracting based on the humour of the features but Scott’s got a very soft gentle tone of voice doesn’t come across as loud or in your face. I think when you are on in the working day where people maybe listening as said in car, in the office or tradespeople on a job listening to the radio theres a certain style needed
    • Yes, good on you doing your own music blog website. I get that point with the 100% all new music can be alienating but think thats more if the station were to do more totally new bands and artists the thing that new music shows that preceded Jack have always have reflected big artists national and international who have been around for a while be that few years to a decade or two whether playing new stuff from artists to Dua Lipa, Coldplay or Nia Archives. I find its bizarre how music curation has changed a lot in the last decade as what I like of what radio can do well is that ability to hear an audible description of a new artist and information about their music with sense of opinion and thought from the presenter and an interview with the switch to sound features and spotify playlists. It’s not that same magazine effect that Steve Lamarq and Jo Whiley could be an audible magazine show like the NME to Zane Lowe’s radio 1 show complimenting Gonzo which Saunders has revived for MTV
    • I would argue against that, I once drove my car into a post listening to Scott Mills.  But it was back in the day, he was doing Stupid Street with Chappers at the time!
