Grimmy Loses Listeners Again

So it's another set of figures low for the Breakfast Show. I know Mr Cooper says all is well in the world because of YouTube and Social Media. Maybe so but how much longer does it have to dip before he pushes the panic button? I reckon he has something in mind for the station next year? How do we find figures for the likes of Mills and Greg? What's everyone think?

He can't hind behind some Facebook stats forever. Grimmy's days are surely numbered (although this forum has been saying that since about 2012, but they must be now).

Figures for daytime shows aren't publically released, you have to be a Rajar subscriber to access them. Shame, I've always wanted to know what the figures are like for other shows.

WELOVEMOYLESPART2, do you miss Chris by any chance?

and, if anything, it's looking like perhaps BBB could be fired if he keeps this up. Surely they know that a lack of listeners is bad, irrespective of their ages. With Capital on the rise (and Kiss Fresh notably, the highest performing DAB channel), it's looking like this may be a bit of a naff ending of a brilliant era.

Brilliant era? Hardly. Whilst I don't think he'll have the same level of vitriol directed at him as Mathew Bannister (who I happen to think did what was necessary), nor do I think he'll be revered as much as the Parf Daddy was. Ahh, Andy Parfift. Now there was a man who knew how to run a fantastic radio station.

Ben Cooper's done what he sees as necessary to keep up with modern trends and to future-proof Radio 1 but I do miss the feel of the station during the Parfitt era. The shows seemed to have more freedom, longer links and there was less of an obsession with celebrities. Don't get me wrong, it's still one of the best stations in the world and I love it but there are some things I miss that got me hooked in the first place.

I'd be amazed if Grimshaw was still on breakfast this time next year. Greg has now taken his Children in Need job and seems to be doing more outside R1, he really does deserve his shot at breakfast and now would seem like the perfect time to swap. Could also be handy with Newsbeat as if Tina leaves due to her ever-increasing profile outside R1, Chris Smith would go to breakfast with Greg and then Ben Mundy, Steve Holden or whoever would replace him on afternoons.

I've never favoured Greg on breakfast but I'd be interested to see him have a stab at it. Who'd be his replacement though? As for Newsbeat, what you suggest is what would likely happen if Chris Smith did move to mornings, however IMO he is what makes Newsbeat and it's best presenter, and losing him on the 5:45 slot would be a shame.

When Moyles left, it took me about 6 months to properly warm to Grimmy. Within the last 18 months or so I feel he's been on a downward spiral with the show. It sounds desperate! And he's probably Radio 1's DJ with the highest amount of sick days...just saying.

If I was to have a guess, I'd say in 3 years we'll have Greg on breakfast, then Clara, Grimmy on afternoons (or Matt Edmondson if Nick doesn't stick around) and Alice Levine on Drive.

What about Mills?

By the way the Breakfastshaw appears to be an attention seeker to me... #justsaying

The wooden panels of Radio 2 await him maybe? Although if you'd of told me in 2006 that Scott would still be on Radio 1 in 10 years time I wouldn't of been suprised. He continues to be the best on the daytime lineup, he deserves to stop on another 10 imo.

He started alongside the likes of Chris Moyles, Mark & Lard, Simon Mayo, Clive Warren etc and is the only one left at Radio 1 who can turn his hand to anything. I mean thinking about different situations. If an event on the scale of 9/11 happened today could anyone on there apart from Scott be trusted to handle that properly on air...

on the grid.

I could see Mills moving to Leicester Square at Heart?

Nah not a chance. He was at Heart when it first launched, and he said in an interview a while back (think it was at the nextrad.io conference, it's on YouTube and well worth a watch if you haven't seen it) that he could never go back to all that now (Heart and commercial radio as a whole I think). A broadcaster of Mills' calibre doing 30 second links on the Time Tunnel - complete waste, it's well below him.

God, it's remarkable how the ordeal just goes on and on and on. Every time you think it just can't continue the way it is, it does. For goodness sakes, just put the breakfast show out of its misery.

The only saving grace here is that these are Grimmy's feelings - with any luck, Ben Cooper has other ideas.

It's not that simple. Grimmy is actually doing a good job when you take a step back. He's exactly the sort of presenter they need on breakfast to attract younger audiences and, whatever we may think of him, he appeals to them. "Grimmy Loses More Listeners But Listening Among Young People Across The Board Is Actually Down" isn't quite so catchy as a headline.

Moyles had more listeners, yes. But a lot of his listeners were over 25 and part of a generation who grew up with Radio 1 and listening to the radio as a habit- it was a main source of entertainment and music. Grimmy was basically told by Ben Cooper (who was put under huge pressure by the BBC Trust to lower the average listener age) to ditch those loyal over 25s and focus on the 16-24 demographic. That generation has YouTube, Spotify, Buzzfeed, Facebook, Instagram, the list goes on- while they're on those sites/apps, they're probably not listening to the radio. Radio 1 is in a constant fight to attract them by going where they are and using video/ social media etc to get them to listen. The fact that Grimmy has added so many young listeners is quite an achievement IMO.

I'm not saying he's one of my favourite presenters on the station (he's not, I think Scott and Greg are much better and would prefer them on breakfast) but if I was Ben Cooper, I'd be struggling to find a major reason to get rid of him right now.

Suggest people give this a read : http://www.nme.com/blogs/nme-blogs/mythbusting-radio-1-losing-500000-listeners-half-story-1971412 .

It's balanced, fair and provides some good insight into where radio aimed at young people is going and how Radio 1 will likely be shaping it.

Ah, good. Yes. Many good points made here. Nick is doing a good job at doing what he's been asked to do, but unfortunately the show does seem to be lacking that "show" element - it feels like he doesn't put a lot of effort into what he's doing on air. He'll often be at the studios at 6:15, and be gone by half ten.

Whereas presenters like Greg and even his Capital competitor Will Manning arrive at more like 1pm and stay until 8pm.

Nick doesn't seem to enjoy radio from a radio point of view. I don't know where I'm going with that, but it's a thought nontheless.

You can't rely on the younger generation to fill the void though. People 10 - 15 years younger than me do exactly as stated above, use technology to get what music they want when they want. They don't understand what a radio show is, because there's never been one in their world. My coming of age was probably from 1997 - 2005, and we had radio and music channels. That was it. Things are a world apart today.

Radio 1 need to extend their age range to people from as early as possible to under 40. Look at it this way. I've felt alienated from Radio 1 since about 2009, and as of 2017 I'm 28 years old. I've tried Radio 2 but their local radio feel, and playing past it artists on their A & B playlists like Status Quo and Rod Stewart just doesn't cut it for me. It's a couple of genetations away, ABBA and Depeche Mode aren't my era.

The only few I can tolerate is Simon Mayo, Sara Cox, Jo Wiley and Mark Radcliffe (if he's not doing the folk show and covering a daytime slot). And that's just presenter wise, the entire feel of the station is just 'sod anyone who was born after 1980'. And otherwise for Radio 1 is 'screw anyone who was born before '97'. That's a big gap and as I've said on here loads of times someone has to fill it. Because 25-40 is the youngest generation who seems to use Radio whatsoever.

Looking at the comments on Radio 2's facebook page and the bitching towards anyone my age, it's no wonder we don't cross over.

on the grid.

    • Annie did the Friday night dance show as well so I think that made her more prominent. She's an excellent presenter at new music and I think Jack is the perfect successor for this show. Clara was always in the 'good' category for me. She's been around since I started listening to R1 so feels a bit weird she's leaving. Think it's only Greg, Matt, Danny Howard and Pete Tong left now!
    • See I don’t agree…I think the three way dynamic is not really working. Vick & Katie are really great together and I enjoy Vick & Jamie together. It’s something between Katie & Jamie that’s not gelling for me. However it’s early days and they are still much better than some other combos. Plus Matt & Jamie were radio comedy gold for me so I don’t think Jamie’s the problem. Just maybe didn’t need to be a three.
    • HAppy birthday Scott mills I hope u like the photo sent to you and I hope u recived my massive birthday CARD as I sent it to BBC RADIO 2 broadcasting house on special recorded delivery for you as let me if u have got it as I wrote a very large letter to you inside the card and sent a photo inside the card as well your biggest fan Yolanda xxxx LOVE 💖 YOU MILLIONS SCOTT  MILLS
    • It's rather sad that Pink News is even running this - they should know better.
    • I was invested in the show when it was Vick and Jordan / Katie - now I don't pay attention and might leave the station when Jordan starts on Capital.  What I do hear is a mix of formulaic and awful.   It's strange how one person leaving a station can affect your outlook on the whole station.
    • Happy birthday Scott! Hurry up and get back on the airwaves 😊
    • Think it just depends on his commitments but agree he's a good listen.
    • I liked her last show, but I don’t feel it had the same impact as Annie’s show. Also, I feel her tenure was quite short to be honest, so don’t understand what the sentiments are all about. I mean Annie did this show for 6 years and Zane Lowe for 12, compared to Clara’s 3 years. Looking forward to Jack taking over from her - I think he has a lot of influence from Zane Lowe and we need that energy in 6pm slot.
    • I wonder if R1 will do a big event type thing on the week that Jordan starts on Capital? It will minimise the number of people turning over I’d guess
    • Hard to believe that all the new shows from September 2021 are now pretty much over, aside from RMC on the live lounge show, and even then, they seemed to change things up after 18 months or so. It feels like yesterday since 6th September 2021 when all those new shows began!
    • I've never listened to Rylan before this week but have found him to be excellent.  He should be Scott's main cover going forwards
    • Always thought Arielle would get this show. She's the most natural presenter to Annie Mac. Maybe it was something to do with her Dj career and residencies in Ibiza
    • Sad that she said she felt different to others at Radio 1 having come from 1Xtra. Lovely how supportive Greg was through her career.
    • To be honest she never filled Annie’s shoes in my eyes. It’s been a disappointing tenure having not been able to grow her show. It’s a stark contrast from her mid morning show where I preferred her to RMC.
    • Yesterday when Katie was off was nearly unlistenable. Shows how vital she is in the show dynamic.
