Edmondson Takes Radio 1 Off Air

(for about four minutes).

15:55 today, listen back. Long silence. In case you're interested, first two tracks on the emergency tape are The Vamps - Last Night and Fuse ODG - Million Pound Girl, with an old sweeper in between. I'd reckon it was last updated around Spring 2014. Matt came back on and discussed it afterwards, apparently it was Charlie Sloth's fault. Very funny.

I find it strange how the Emergency Tape started part way through The Vamps and not at the start? Unless it is just on constant play now, when they were in Yalding it used to start from the start after the 30 second delay.

I wondered that too, but when it came on again before the start of Phil's show, it seemed to start from the beginning with Clean Bandit and an ident. To be honest, I'm just surprised (and slighyly disappointed) that it's not Hey Ya by OutKast anymore.

It was also weird how as soon as the studio was taken off air a trail played, before the silence - I'm trying to work out how that happened. Anyone who knows more about radio engineering than me got any suggestions?

Interesting that the emergency "tape" is at least two years old. The fact that we've (probably) never heard it before just goes to show how rare technical breakdowns are these days (of course this was human error rather than a fault).

Here's a fun emergency tape incident from back in '09 with some '06 imaging shoved in for old time's sake.

They probably purposely make it slightly outdated so that people outside of the studio can be alerted to the fact that something's wrong.

Also, can we take a moment to appreciate how Vernon Kay used to do a weekly maths question as an actual radio feature?

I remember that! Our Vern was quite the geek when he was at Radio 1.

Really weird how in the Matt Edmondson one, you could hear background noise in the studio while there was dead air between the two emergency tape tracks but Matt didn't say anything on the mic. Then in the Phil Taggart one, Newsbeat came on at 10, then something went wrong midway through, we had about 20 seconds of Clean Bandit before they got back to Kat Collins towards the end of her bulletin. Don't think Phil addressed it either. The nerds in us secretly love when something goes wrong though!

Aha you're not alone there one bit!

That also puzzled me as if you listen it does kick in at a odd time which would be when the studio cut out.

The trails are scheduled in VCS like the shows music, and in turn is played out from VCS, which means the trail needed to be launched by pressing the "Start Divert" button on the desk.

Each studio has it's own Studer SCore that the studios mixing consoles connect too (the DHD version was a DSP Frame) which all the local (to that studio) audio sources would connect to, such as Microphones, Headphones, CMS (Call Management System), DJ Decks, CD Players etc. The SCores are linked together so you can share audio sources and GPIO between studios, it's also how they can handover to another studio by fading up the new studio's Program Bus. Now If I remember rightly somewhere on the 8th floor near the studios is the Rack room which has the servers for each studio (I would guess there is a minimum of 3 per studio, 1 for VCS Playout, 1 for VCS Cart on the DJ side, and 1 for VCS Cart where the news presenter would sit in the studio). I would also imagine that within this rack room there will be a Studer SCore that the VCS audio outputs would connect too (via IP Audio or Digital), and these will be selected on the console in the studio in the config and will act the same as a local source would.

Now with this in mind, All I can think is that when the studio lost power as a fail safe "dira!" just played the next item, or Matt started it in great timing, but because it's audio output is connected to the SCore in the Rack Room as opposed to the one in the studio it still went out on air because it would have still been routed to the main Program Bus.

This is how I would have set it up anyway.

Actually on a second listen there's no way Matt started that trail, so again I think dira! must have started it as a fail safe with it being the next item in the playlist.

In terms of the Vamps starting late, they started 30 seconds after the trail started, so if the trail hadn't have played we would have heard the full Vamps track, although it still seems odd as Clean Bandit is clearly the start of the tape...

    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
    • Just watched that advert and it made me realise quite how many 'big' specialist presenters there were back then
    • I've been reminded of this Radio 1 cinema advert. I remember being so excited to see it. The In New Music We Trust era. Everything felt so cool, even if they had Westwood.
    • Just Vick and Katie on Wednesday (and presumably Thursday as well).
    • Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false.   Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global?  He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC.  Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful?   It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going.  Roman and Jordan have the same management team.  Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC.  They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer.  They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him.  If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker.  Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan.  None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones.  It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.
    • Wow, surprised he signed a new contract in September but it says a lot about Jordan that he continued to a very high standard throughout last summer/autumn if this was all going on in the background.
