Full statement:

BBC Radio 1 today announces a new three-hour Rock Show with Daniel P Carter on Sunday night from 7-10pm, following The Official Chart. An alternative to the various Sunday night TV talent competitions, the new show is part of changes to the station’s specialist music and weekend schedules.

Alice Levine will be hosting a new weekend afternoon show from 1-4pm, as part of a continuing strategy to develop new, young presenting talent for the BBC.

There will also be an extended late evening programme from Monday to Wednesday which will be hosted by Huw Stephens from 10pm-1am and will focus on new music, including BBC Introducing content from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the English regions between 12midnight–1am.

There will be a new Monday 9-10pm show for Dan & Phil, with the show being fully visualised, Radio 1 Stories (documentary strand) moves to Tuesday 9-10pm, and Radio 1’s Surgery has a new slot on Wednesday 9-10pm. Phil Taggart will be on air Thursday nights from 9-10pm with a new music show.

Radio 1Xtra has a new look to the weekday 10pm shows with Monki starting a new show on Monday 10pm-1am, a new show for Sian Anderson on Wednesday and Seani B on Thursdays. On Saturday afternoon, female rapper A.Dot joins 1Xtra with a new show from 4-7pm.

It will also mean that Radio 1 & 1Xtra will say goodbye to some familiar faces. Edith Bowman, Nihal, Mike Davies, Rob Da Bank, Jen Long, Ally McCrae, CJ Beatz, Crissy Criss and Robbo Ranx, will all be signing off. Radio 1 & 1Xtra thanks them all for their hard work and commitment to the stations over many years.

These changes, which are due to begin on 1 September, enable Radio 1 & 1Xtra to deliver some of the savings they are being asked to make as part of the wider BBC’s financial challenges following the last Licence Fee settlement. Tough decisions have been made but the strategy remains for the stations to continue to innovate and invent new ways to reach their younger audience.

Ben Cooper, Controller, Radio 1 & 1Xtra, said: “These cuts to our budget are hurting, it means I have had to make some tough choices and say goodbye to some friends and respected colleagues. I believe these new schedules continue to innovate, reflect and celebrate the UK’s youth and music culture.â€

In other changes, Skream joins Radio 1’s Residency, which plays host to some of the biggest names and emerging new talent in the dance world and moves to a new three-hour slot at 10pm Thursday. B.Traits joins Radio 1’s Friday night dance line-up from 1-4am, following Annie Mac (7-10pm) and Pete Tong (10pm-1am), who are both extended by an hour.

There is also an extra hour for Dev on Radio 1 Weekend Breakfast (6-10am) and Clara Amfo on 1Xtra Weekend Breakfast (6-10am).

Daniel P Carter said: “To be starting the show directly after the announcement of the UK number one is obviously amazing and to be in the position where my show is an alternative option to the Simon Cowell circus is also a beautiful thing. If that's your bag then all good, but I'm stoked that The Rock Show will be in a slot that reflects the importance of a genre that is now, and always will be, in great shape because it is everything to the people that love it.â€

Alice Levine said: “In the 18 months since I joined Radio 1 I've already had so many incredible experiences. And now to be given a weekend daytime show really is a huge privilege. Bring on September!â€

Huw Stephens said: “Night-time is a special time at Radio 1, and there is a strong tradition of supporting new artists, so I am delighted to be presenting a new show that will play excellent music and champion BBC Introducing artists as we end the day together.â€

Mixed feelings to these changes.

Very sad to see Edith go after all these years (pretty much just Scott left now from the era I think of Radio 1 was at its best), and also Jen Long too.

Great to see Alice replace Huw on weekend afternoons, but then sad to see Phil & Alice being separated. I love their show on weekdays! And has Phil now just got an hour show on Thursday? Don't understand that one as I think he is really good and deserves more!

Also strange the move of The Surgery to Wednesday and Dan & Phil to Monday.

No more Review show either :(.

Nice to see Dev getting an extra hour on weekends.

I think the most positive of all these changes is seeing Alice getting her own show, but then that means there will be less of hearing her, but hopefully she will then replace Huw as the main cover person. Perhaps there lining up Alice slowly for weekdays to replace Fearne eventually and this is the first step.

Some pretty big changes here.

Phil & Alice's split is big news but hopefully they will get more cover shows alongside Dev during daytime. Huw's move to weekday evenings will mean the end of him covering Scott/Greg/Zane's shows so Phil & Alice are in a good position.

Not massively keen on Dan & Phil's current show. It's just requests and silly features that really don't need to be aired so I think it's best it's being cut down.

Sad that Jen/Ally/Edith/Nihal etc are leaving. However Jen has BBC3 (for now), Nihal has BBC Asian Network (same time as Fearne's show) but unsure what Edith and Ally will do next.

It seems odd that Phil T and Huw are both presenting separate shows but both focussing on new music? Why not have them co-host?

Also evenings and overnights are more streamlined which means that from 2200-0400 all shows will become 3 hours in length as opposed to 2. Toddla T, Benji B and Annie Nightingale, Friction and B Traits gave been reshuffled.

Friction - 0100-0400 - Monday

Annie Nightingale - Tuesday - 0100-0400

Benji B - Wednesday - 0100-0400

Toddla T - Thursday - 0100-0400

B Traits - Friday - 0100-0400

Think it's a shame the Phil and Alice show has ended so soon, it was really good and had great features like the Lolz Lounge and the Bedroom Parties- it's been cut down in its prime. It wouldn't be as bad if Phil had carried on doing the show solo, but the fact that he's been binned off completely and demoted to 1 hour a week is terrible. I'm wondering why they didn't just give Huw the 10PM show anyway, I'm sure they trialled him at the time, then settled on Phil and Alice instead- then replaced them with him a year and a half later!

Edith leaving was predictable, but its a shame the Review Show went with her. Does Dan and Phil moving mean the request show's been binned off as well? Oh well, at least they're only on for one hour once a week (but I would have put them on a Wednesday instead, in the old Matt Edmondson Show slot, because to some people Dan and Phil may be vaguely classed as "comedy"). Would've left R1 Stories on Monday and put The Surgery on a Tuesday as well.

Not sure whether Dev's show being given an extra hour is good or not- he's just got off earlies and now he has to get up earlier again (although I guess it's still later than he used to be on), plus he has an extra hour to fill, which I think he might struggle with.

Looking on the bright side of all of this, when I heard Chris Smith say "Radio 1 has announced schedule changes", my heart skipped a beat. It was such a relief to know that Scott's still on, I was worried for a second!

They trialled Huw in the gap October - December 2012 when Grimmy left to do Breakfast and Phil & Alice started in January of last year. The changes also mean that the station will have no Scottish presenters from September which coincidently is the month of the Independence Referendum.

I'm just glad that Scott and Greg's futures on the station are secure for a wee bit longer!

Phil tweeted about it a little while ago, he doesn't seem very excited about it (understandably so). All he's said is

<iframe class="twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered" id="twitter-widget-0" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" style="border: currentColor; border-image: none; width: 1px; height: 0px; visibility: hidden; position: absolute;" allowtransparency="true"></iframe>

From September 1st I will be presenting the Thursday Night 9 - 10pm show on @BBCR1

<iframe class="twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered" id="twitter-widget-1" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" style="border: currentColor; border-image: none; width: 1px; height: 0px; visibility: hidden; position: absolute;" allowtransparency="true"></iframe>

@turvilltweets Not anymore dude. 9-10pm Thursdays now.

<script src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8" async=""></script>

and

@turvilltweets @BBCR1 Alice weekend afternoons and me on an hour on a Thursday at 9pm.

Really don't understand why it was necessary to get rid of him for Huw, he's been at Radio 1 since 1999 anyway, he should be on his way out, not his way up. Phil's much better, and the future of Radio 1.

Hmmm - overall I feel positive about the changes...

This is great for Alice, she's such a natural on the radio and I hope with a solid production team she can create a great show for a weekend afternoon!

Huw moving to weekday evenings is cool - I've always enjoyed him doing new music shows. I feel a bit sorry for Phil, hoping there's a plan in place for him as he'd be a wasted talent.

I'm slightly disappointed that the review show is going, and also not 100% sure of the rock show being on a Sunday evening.

I have mixed emotions about this...

Huw definitely deserves this slot, its the John Peel slot after all and will really suit him, think this was the slot he was destined for instead of weekend afternoons! However i will be really sad to see the end of Phil and Alices show, it was one of my favourites on the station and has only been on for 18 months!

Really angry about Phil's situation!! shouldn't be this way!!! Back in 2012 he was doing loads of cover, then it seems to have just slowed down with the energy being put into Alice.. I really like Alice but i don't get why Phil couldn't have gone with her, or done a joint show with Huw.. just seems outrageous! I am genuinely really upset about this!

I don't really get the Sunday night rock show thing... Yes Rock is big but not really sure why it needs to be on a Sunday night, and if so why keep Dan p Carter, don't rate him that much!

Quite glad about the Dan and Phil move, it didn't really work their old slot, but having said that they still do deserve a slot.

Think Dev getting an extra hour is a positive!

The night time specialist shows apart from Skream have all had massive gains and wins! Rob Da Bank is definitely 6music material now, where he can play whatever he wants from whatever genre! Glad to see them all get 3 hour shows though! Also I assume the Essential mix is now 4-6am? Bit late in my opinion.

Shame about Monki not being on radio 1 and just 1Xtra now, but it is ultimately a positive as its earlier and longer!

Think Skream moving was a good idea, who wants 2 hours of techno and house directly after Pete's 2 hours of house... yes Skream went darker but big deal!

Finally glad Scott is staying for a bit longer.. it wouldn't surprise me if there was a Grimmy/ Greg swap soon but maybe not just yet..

Huw at 10pms a good move, Dev being up at 6 is a bit pointless who's awake then plus 4 hours with just Dev is a bit much IMO. Wonder if Grimmy will move til 6 as well?

I'd have moved Phil & Alice together as Radio 1 does need some duo shows.

I've been anticipating a Cox-Moyles style swap with Grimmy and Greg for a while, I think perhaps at the end of this year/beginning of next year. Saying that, Ben Cooper is very unpredictable, so who knows what will happen? Maybe we really will end up with Grimmy on breakfast til 2019...

I'm waiting for this too. Announcing schedule changes for September in June is quite early. Wonder whether this additional change will be announced in July with it being a more major one.

I'm guessing splitting Phil & Alice up is one way of reducing costs. Don't need to pay for two DJs for a show, only one. Big shame though as they are the two best signings Radio 1 has had in years, and there show was brilliant. Hope Phil will get something more soon.

I'm not feeling too excited by todays news but I am really happy to see Alice on in the daytime and I think she'll really suit the 1-4 PM slot. Plus, it puts her in a better position to cover for Fearne. :)

Not so happy to see Phil Taggart being reduced to just one hour a week. I really don't think that he deserves this, especially seeing how well he's been doing on the 10-12 show with Alice. Personally, I would have preferred to have seen Huw get the Thursday 9-10 PM slot and Phil just go solo between 10 and 1.

Nice to see Annie Mac getting a longer show on a Sunday night, really like that show but it'll be a real shame to see Jen and Ally leave the station. Every time I listen to them they sound great.

I don't get why they have bothered moving Dan and Phil along with The Surgery to the week nights and replacing it with the Rock Show. Personally, I don't think the Rock Show suits the target audience of the station, especially the younger audience they seem to want to attract. And why put it on at 7 o'clock on a Sunday? Seems a bit too early to me. Going back to Dan and Phil, I did think that their show was too long for them to fill and the content seemed quite poor at times so I think cutting them down to just an hour is a good idea.

Don't quite get why they haven't moved Dance Anthems as that's another show that seems to be on far too early and the extra hour for Dev does seem a bit pointless...

Still, I'm glad to see that Scott seems to be safe (for now!) and I too wouldn't be that surprised if there is a Grimmy/Greg swap within this next year, especially as it will be two years on breakfast for Grimmy in September.

Well, nobody's confirmed whether Aled is staying or not, although there's nothing to say he's going either. I like hearing Aled on the Surgery though, as a surviving Moyles team member. I like hearing Tina on the news as well for the same reason. I think he's a great host, and at the moment I don't think there's anybody else who could do it.

He's said on Twitter that "Wednesday is the new Sunday". So he should still be hosting it.

Aside from that I'm not sure The Rock Show on a Sunday is a good idea. I can't imagine putting a niche, specialist show on so early will get many listeners.

Not surprised at the leavers really. Glad Alice Levine is getting a promotion - hopefully a stepping stone for taking over Fearne's slot one day.

To be honest, I'm surprised they left Fearne where she is. Her show's been stagnant for a while, and whilst I don't dislike it or Fearne's personality, I think it's come to it's natural end and someone new and promising *cough* Alice Levine *cough* should be given that slot instead. Perhaps they don't want to get rid of her quite so soon after coming back from maternity leave. Either next year, or if she has another baby, I think that might be the end of Cotton on R1. Just my speculation, of course.

To be honest I agree, she doesn't seem to actually be enjoying it right now, just not as much passion as she used to have, or connection with the station! Almost 10 years since she started on radio 1, I think it's time for her move to a new slot or take some more time off until she really wants to be on the station! Think she's more passionate about telly and her kid... speculation as well of course!!!!!

You can really see the cost saving measures quite evidently. Some serious spreading of shows overnight at the weekend and by splitting Phil and Alice up must save a lot of money. I though Edith, Nihal and Rob Da Bank would be next to be cut, but I really think its such a shame to loose the review show. I am delighted that Aled is staying on the Surgery. I think it really takes real skill, talent, fantastic quick thinking and compassion to present that show, and its something that sounds fantastic with him presenting, and they are very lucky to have him. The Huw and Alice swap is a wholey logical one and one I think many of us predicted for ages. Hopefully it puts her in a better position to take over from Fearne who couldnt come across less interested being at work!

Moving Dan and Phil and the Surgery is quite a bizarre decision I think. Its when people are doing their homework and a very sensible time frame at the moment. Personally I think they should have left them where they were and put the new music show with Huw, Monday, tues and wed and the rock show on thurs. God knows why they are suddenly making such a huge thing of rock?! It has the same air of uneasiness as hearing Danny Howards show starting at 4pm!

interesting to see that monki's show is repeated on a saturday night and diplo and friends has been pushed back so late! But i guess diplo and friends is like the essential mix and so mainly gets its listeners on iPlayer.

This all seems a bit crazy. I'm very happy for Alice, she'll do really well in that slot and I hope things continue to progress for her. Wasn't overly keen on the dan and phil show, a lot of it was just too much so cutting down to an hour is good. Very upset about Phil, Jen and Ally though, I'm hoping if they are cutting Phil down, that means he will be used a lot more for cover.

I saw the writing on the wall as far as Edith, Nihal and Rob Da Bank are concerned. Cooper wil keep dropping the older ones every now and again.. But well done to Pete Tong and Annie Nightingale for surviving the cull yet again! Also good to see Alice get the weekend lunchtime slot ,as many of us predicted a female would take over that slot, and Huw is in a better slot that suits his talents and interests. He should have got a weekday evening slot years ago. Of course great news that Scott is staying on weekday afternoons for now.Does that mean his contract has been extended does anyone know?

PS I'm sorry to see Jen Long and ALLy McRae go.It's particularly backward that Radio 1 are getting rid of all their scottish DJs in t he month of the referendum, esp so soon after OBW coming from there. It doesn't send a very friendly message to the scots does it!

The Review show might be a bit miffed that the show is being dumped after winning a sony gold last year!

One question- now that Huw is doing the 10pm slot who wll be the stand in f or Zane Lowe? Alice or Phil maybe?
