RAJAR Q1 2014

Last year:

Radio 1: 10.26, Breakfast: 5.78

Last quarter:

Radio 1: 10.97, Breakfast: 6.29

I think they'll probably hold from last quarter, maybe just a slight decrease on breakfast from last quarter, which saw a 700,000 increase then.

I'd predict, Radio 1: 10.95 and Breakfast: 6.26.

Q1 2014

Radio 1: 10.53 m

Breakfast: 5.85 m

Quite considerable losses for both compared to last quarter. Although, on the BBC press release they are now also adding figures for aged 10+ for Radio 1. Those figures are 11.48 m and 6.63 m, but hard to compare these figures with others as they don't usually quote them in 10+, instead 15+.

They're keen to point out though that Grimmy's losses are mainly from the 25+ category.

Radio 2's figures on the other hand are quite astonishing. Record breaking figures for them. Looks like even more evidence to me of people being pushed out of Radio 1 to Radio 2.

ben Cooper is putting a positive gloss on things but it's never good to lose half a million listeners .Theyre not gaining enough younger listeners yet.I hope Scott isn't replaced by a younger Dj in a desperate attempt to fix the problem

Scott was joking on his show about being replaced by someone 'younger and slimmer' today. Could he be referring to Matt Edmondson by any chance?

I'm getting really paranoid now- I was listening to Monday's podcast when they did the RoNR fact about the prime minister who does a radio show in his country. Scott and Greg were joking about David Cameron getting a show on Radio 1, and they were wondering which slot he'd get, when Scott said "they'd probably give him my show". Are we looking in to this too much?

I hope so. I know he still has a contract till next year. At the time it was renewed, I wasn't sure he would renew it again, but the show is sounding so good currently. If Scott did go, I can see the listening figures going down quite significantly. I know it's all about age these days, but I still think Scott appeals to the wanted demographic better than most shows.

I'd definitely agree with this and I assume the listening figures would too. If you look at the Radio 1 YouTube channel, the content generated by Scott's show (innuendo bingo, Chris' interviews etc) generate more views than any other. If this online Radio 1 TV channel is launching this year then I imagine Scott's output will be crucial to its success. Plus, his podcast allows kids who are in school when he's on air to listen to the show on a daily basis. If they wanted to get rid of Scott (without using age as the reason), they'd have to show that his output isn't appealing to the demographic. It still clearly is.

The main difference between Scott and, for example, Grimmy is that I think Scott doesn't try too hard when appealing to young people. It's a demographic he appeals to anyway. You only have to look at his music taste (which he describes himself as being similar to "a thirteen-year-old girl") to know that. Then I listen to Grimmy's show and it feels like they are trying to aim their show at young people. Teenagers don't like to be talked to like teenagers. That's where I think Scott's show hits the balance perfectly. His show doesn't feel aimed at young people specifically but he talks about things young people are interested in.

I think that if they were to let Scott go now because of his age it would cause real uproar. You only have to look at the comments on anything Radio 1 post on Facebook to see the impact that Moyles leaving had on the station. I've been listening back to a lot of old Moyles podcasts recently and, towards the end, his output was very much out of target. He was referencing 80s radio, he had Roy Walker appearing on a daily basis (who wouldn't have even been on TV in the lifetime of many in the target audience) and Keith Chegwin was making regular appearances. I adored Moyles' show when it was on the radio but in terms of it appealing on Radio 1, it came to an end at the right time. Scott s nowhere near that yet. I think they'll let Scott's show come to a natural end, whenever that may be and whenever Scott wants it to be.

Scott's show is as you said on point at the moment and he announced on Friday that the Scott Mills Daily has been downloaded over 905,000 times in April. This just shows that in addition to the many millions that listen live in the afternoon, nearly a million more are catching up "on demand". Like it's been suggested, if Scott is forced because of ageism at the BBC I will be furious but if he chooses to move on without management influence, I will respect his decision although I don't think he'll leave voluntary for a few more years because he's regularly said that he's a "radio nerd" and has been since the age of 8. You can also tell that he's well loved and respected at Radio 1 and he loves doing his job. He is primary cover presenter for 4 shows which is quite a lot considering the majority of other DJ's never do cover shows.

The good news is that even if Scott does leave radio 1 at the end of his current contract it looks like his future on the BBC is secure . He'll be presenting his first show on radio 2 on bank holiday monday at 8pm . That's a good sign .He'll probably do m ore and more shows on radio 2 like Sara Cox did till he moves there full time

I can see this happening, and I think it's a good thing. I think Radio 2 will eventually fully move on from the 60's type sound it's been putting across for years. And pull in the Radio 1 listeners of the 90's and 00's such as myself. It's already in full swing with Chris Evans, Simon Mayo, Mark Radcliffe, Sara Cox, Dave Pearce etc doing or having done shows on there. Scott would be a great addition as I'm not sure how much longer Steve Wright will be there, or how much longer people will put up with him...

on the grid.

    • Less so with 5 Live. But with Nihal, Nicky Campbell and Mark Chapman get what you are saying.6 Music does have that with Huw Stephens, Mary Anne Hobbs, Gilles Peterson, Marc Riley and Mark Radcliffe
    • Agreed, Martha seems to quietly taken over as host of the Tuesday Bass and Big Beats show that Annie Nightingale did would be good to have some promotion to be done for her show. Agreed with this on bank holidays on a Radio 1 dance day inpaticular would be quite good to have Sarah Storey, Jaguar, Jeremiah Asiamah, Charlie Tee and Martha presenting. I always felt that in Christmas and New Year previously having Victoria Jane to do a Future Soul take over playlist.
    • To be fair to him, this week and next week he’s on his podcast tour which was arranged well before he started on R1. After that I would guess he’ll start being on everyday?
    • It’s Jamie’s dream of a lifetime to be a full time Radio 1 presenter apparently, but he can only do it 2 or 3 days a week.
    • Radio 1 generation meaning??  Today's 10-30 yr-olds? I doubt it. They'll still know Pete Tong though, because he is rhyming slang!
    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock. 6th May schedule has updated to show that the Radio 1 Big Weekend Shows will now be the following: 6am-10am 10am-2pm 2pm-6pm 6pm-8pm Still no presenters listed.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
