Adele & Phil in for Matt Edmondson

I heard Ally McCrae today- I like his voice, but didn't think much of the show. He didn't know what he was doing at all, no real content, and he was struggling to fill links. He was just resorting to reading off shout outs and information about the music (although Phil Taggarts sit ins aren't much better!). Plus he completely ballsed up going into the 10:30 news, which amused me ;-) The 11:30 was better, but he went too early so there was a few seconds of silence, he'd got the hang of it by the 12:30.

Was he called in at the last minute, so didn't have time to prepare anything?

That would have been the perfect time to give Pete Allison an opportunity. He would have been better than Ally anyway and from listening to his shows on Absolute and covering early breakfast on Radio 1, he could easily be a future weekday presenter. That's how Greg James started- Sara Cox was ill and they had to call someone last minute, so they called Greg who had never been on R1 before and look where he is now. A bit of risk-taking from R1 wouldn't go amiss.

Just listened to that awful news intro. Definitely needs some lessons from the Scott Mills School of Introducing the News.

I know what you mean. As strange as this sounds, I always think of how a DJ introduces the news as a measure of how slick they are generally. E.g. Scott is clearly the best, Greg's pretty good too. Dev, Huw Grimmy and Fearne are be okay, but they rarely hit the vocal. Matt Edmondson always makes it sound clunky (I remember one particularly funny incident when he'd actually done it quite well, except he'd gone a minute early!), Gemma is just awful (but she's awful generally). Moyles was always a news introducing god "...coming up after George with the news, it's 3:30".

For some reason it really gets my tits up when they refer to it as "Radio 1 Newsbeat" and don't bother giving a time check, just "the news" sounds much more natural, Newsbeat is the 15 minute programme!

And that, my dear UMers, is my strange obsession with DJ news introductions. Amen.

I think he must have been a last minute as his picture was not on the App yesterday. I think it would be good if he had had some time to prepare some features and practice.

Where is Matt then?

I suppose we should give Ally a break. It was his first time doing a daytime show I think and he was under a lot of pressure as he didn't know he'd be doing it till the last minute. I'm sure he would get better if he had more experience of doing daytime , but maybe he's happy doing his specialist shows at night. Let's face it if Pete Tong was asked to do a daytime show at the last minute he'd probably sound a bit amauteurish as well!

Pete Tong got slated when he covered The Chris Moyles Show once because it sounded very messy!

Haha, I remember them playing out clips once. It sounded messy, but it was hilarious! Entertaining radio, which Ally McCrae's shout outs and music show was not.

I do like Scott's original style to introducing the news, particularly when he's pressed the Newsbeat Jingle and talks down to the vocal but he's said a lot so hurries to intro the news. Today at 1:30 he said after pressing the jingle "Clean Bandit, Icona Pop and Katy B who performed for us at Radio 1's Academy in Glasgow coming up, it's 1:30, Cat Collins"
