RAJAR Q3 2013

Q3 RAJAR results are out next Thursday (24 Oct). What do we think Radio 1 will get?

Typically this is usually a bad quarter for Radio 1 with the summer holidays. And with the listening age now of Radio 1 being younger, surely this will have an even bigger hit than in previous years.

The figures were slightly up last quarter compared to Q1, however this time I think a decrease is definitely expected. Radio 1 as a whole I think will be under the 11 million mark, closer to 10 million. I think Breakfast will probably be down. Last quarter was 5.89 million. I think this will be down to around 5.5 million.

Grimmy might take a b it of a hit that's true, b ut it won't be as bad as the first quarters for him ,and in any case i think the 2nd quarters were good enough to secure his future on breakfast for another year at least. As for the station as a whole I think the worst of the loss in audience following the schedule changes have probably been absorbed by now.If I'm wrong then it's a bit of a crisis for the station and even more radical changes can be expected .We can only hope Coopers not stupid enough to swap Scott with Matt Edmondson or anything like that

The figures are in,and it's more bad news for Grimmy and radio one .Grimmys audience has plummeted to just 5.5 million and radio 1 are down overall.Radio 2 have made big gains though http://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/nick-grimshaw-loses-listeners-bbc-2485942

So Grimmy's figures are just above the low that Sara's were before Moyles replaced her. Some sites seem to be saying that they are the lowest figures in nearly 20 years (I'm guessing not taking into account Sara's low of 5.5 million???).

I know Radio 1 will be saying that it's the audience age that matters, not the figures, but surely they have to admit that they didn't want them this low? If this continues into next quarter, I can't see Grimmy doing Breakfast for much longer. Maybe Greg James had better start getting prepared for the flagship show.

You might want to to re-read this article as I think you have been confused.

Quarter 3 RAJARS are always a bit of a dip across all stations, including Radio 2. Year on year they have improved, but quarter on quarter they have dropped. Infact in terms of listener numbers, Chris Evans actaully lost more:

Radio 2 Q2 = 15.44m Q3 = 14.94

Chris Evans Q2 = 9.75m Q3 = 9.35m

So although I'm sure Grimmy and Radio 1 are disappointed, it was to be expected, as it across all networks, I gather due to summer holidays. Of the listeners lost, it suggests 72% are over 30, so I think its more about refining audience then losing audience! Still got to feel sorry for the poor guy though!

They will be a bit relieved it wasn't even worse I suppose.Headlines saying 'Grim for Grimshaw' are never good though ,and Cooper would be a lot happier to be talking about a rise in audience today, whatever he says publicly.I suspect the key point w ill come if the figures go below 5 million. That's when Greg James will get the phone call!

I wonder how Scott has done in these figures. If a lot of the older listeners have deserted the station you'd think that might be bad news for Scott since he's bound to have a lot of older loyal listeners.

How embarrassing for the radio one bosses would it be if Scott had a bigger audience than the breakfast show!

Well Grimmy lost 300,000 but remember Radio 1 as a whole lost circa 300,000 listeners in last quater. Poor Grimmy has to take the flack as he is breakfast show host, but all shows would have lost listeners, Scott included. Its normal for Q3 RAJARS to be that way.

I might be wrong but I was under the impression that it was normal for breakfast to lose listeners in Q3 as a large chunk of the target audience aren't awake due to the summer holidays and sleeping in. For Fearne & Scott (and to a lesser extent Greg) there are surely more available listeners who would usually be in school.

    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
    • Just Vick and Katie on Wednesday (and presumably Thursday as well).
    • Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false.   Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global?  He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC.  Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful?   It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going.  Roman and Jordan have the same management team.  Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC.  They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer.  They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him.  If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker.  Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan.  None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones.  It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.
    • Wow, surprised he signed a new contract in September but it says a lot about Jordan that he continued to a very high standard throughout last summer/autumn if this was all going on in the background.
    • They knew Roman wanted to leave early last year but wasn't officially announced but he gave them time to sort replacement. Found and offered Jordan a deal in June or July and needed time to get Jordan out of Contract at bbc and roman to do notice  Jordan had dinner with Katie Vick and Arielle to ask advice and all said he should go.
    • And they told Radio 4’s Feedback that it was an ‘experiment’ to ‘look at the best way to serve young listeners’ but reaffirmed that 280 hours commitment.
    • I doubt he wanted to go to Global if a slot before he found out kemp was leaving.
    • We're hoping to get some answers in the coming weeks
    • From what he's saying on the Pod he's been trying to get out of r1 for a while. Looks like he needed to wait for a show on global to be available. Jordan had bbq last summer with most of thr global execs and he's referenced the deal was in place then. Obviously the hold up was r1 being stubborn
    • All seems to be back to normal this morning.
    • Indeed and Jordan was already friends with Sian Welby, Will Manning and Jimmy Hill.
    • It's great to see those friendships still thriving. I think the days of Radio 1 DJs and Capital DJs being unable to co-exist is long over. You used to either be firmly BBC or commercial, and you don't get the sense that's the case anymore.
    • Maia Beth will be presenting the Radio 1 Happy shows from the 27th April replacing Katie.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001ydkr
    • Vick and Jordan together on Insta (with Ariel’s) in Ibiza. You do imagine Jordan’s ex colleagues have a very different attitude to him than management. Comments on Help! And very subtle comments on Capital Breakfast suggest Jordan was frustrated with Radio 1 / BBC management.
    • I can name quite a few people on this forum who would be better presenters than Danny.
