Why does Scott keep moving that switch

Well I guess this should go in here as its a bit of a geeky question, I'm hoping one of you that knows more about radio than me can answer it.

Why is Scott constantly moving a switch while he is talking.

Is it so he keeps the sound level with in the parameters that broadcasting standards require? Thats the one thing i remember from my 5 mins talking on uni radio one afternoon.

Sorry if for any spelling mistakes, I'm dyspraxic.

This is the 'bed' for the Oh What's Occuring feature. Strictly speaking he should keep the bed at the same level, however sometimes it does sound better to increase or decrease the sound level for theatre, tension or (as i suspect in his case) habit!

Capes :)

I also do that a fair bit. It's useful for when I am talking and if I lose my thought a bit, to just raise the bed up for a second while I find my words. And it is also a habit.

What have I got?

  • 5 months later...

Quite a few DJs do that, such as when talking over songs. I remember once on the Chris Moyles show when they were doing the whole Toby Lerone thing the second time around there was this clip of a woman from a foreign radio station who kept adjusting the fader so much it made the clip difficult to listen to.

Mmm. Dangerous habit to get into, it can sound really crap if you do it wrong.
I'm an unrepentant fader fiddler xD when I'm on air I constantly fiddle with the levels, it's a really bad habit xD

Yeah, I used to be very guilty of it, but it's so tempting! I tend to keep it faily similar levels all the time now. Scott makes it sound good most of the time, because he doesn't always do it and I think radio 1's compression means that it doesn't over exaggerate it.

?!?! Wot an expression (shocked)
Ha ha!! Love it! [Not the actual thing]

Oh God, Bail! I Know what imean!!

LOL a friend of mine came up with it, I've used it ever since.

i could noticeably hear Grimmy do it the other day. It was really annoying, and also totally unnecessary!

Yeah, I hate the way grimmy does it, it's very sudden, over-exaggerated and he does it a lot. That's one reason I don't tune into him very often.

    • At a time when Radio 1 has surely lost listeners to Capital at Breaktast you’d be trying to protect the station so people switch back.  Certainly yesterday I didn’t switch back to Radio 1 at all.
    • Was abysmal…Surely Danny can’t be a contender for anything permanent when the new schedules are locked in I.e Matt and Mollies slot
    • Alexandra Burke creating the phrase 'Elephant In The Room' whooooooooo
    • Zane Versus.... Whooooooooo. Do You Do Fridays? WhooOOOooo.
    • The Capital Breakfast show is right up my street so far - such a fun listen. You've both been great on Radio 1 and are sounding excellent again on Capital A few quickfire questions: You've both been part of some great pairings on radio and on podcast - what goes into making a duo or trio work and sound great on air? Also, Chris - were there ever any discussions about you moving over to Radio 2 with Scott or had the Global offer already come first? Also how do you both go about managing that split between your radio 'you' and the private 'you'? You share a lot on air but also there's some understandably some stuff you keep private (famously Jordan doesn't 'talk about those things'). And how do you make sure if you're having a miserable day or are a bit low that it doesn't come across too much on air?
    • What a nightmare link at 11.15am this morning. Spent 30 seconds waffling about the name of The Last Dinner Party as if he’d never heard it before, then started mentioning Capital and the license fee, and how it’s been used to pay for him to be there, and was then cut off by the start of the next song.
    • Have been reading this all week. She's such a brave woman. Just got to the chapter where she explains why she missed Scott's leaving event at Radio 1. She talks about leaving Radio 1 because her mum's health got worse, and wanting to quietly leave radio at 44 just how she first arrived on the airwaves at 18. Worth a read!
    • Frozen Indigo Angel... Whoooooooo?!!
    • Did it take a lot of tempting to go to Capital Jordan? Did you feel like you’d achieved everything you could at Radio 1 (other than breakfast)? Chris, how did your Capital move come about? Did Radio 1 want you to stay after Scott moved on?

    • I never expected to be enjoying a commercial radio Breakfast Show, but this is a good listen and less adverts than I might have expected.
    • It's got more of a Fri/ Sat feeling to it, for me. But there's nothing inherently wrong with the show.
    • Think it's a lot more fun when they don't have guests and have to find ideas to fill a show.  Them doing some calming traffic reports around the most stressful part of the day. I wonder if there's more they could do with that - 8.15am being the most stressful time. Anyway, I think that of most radio shows, I'd rather hear the creativity than an overhyped celebrity. Greg had it right yesterday with Tom Allen, he wasn't really just there to promote The Apprentice, but to do comedy too.
    • Got to admit I only heard a bit of it tonight whilst driving but I loved it! Will definitely be listening back to this one and in future. Just what Thursday nights needed! 💗
    • Right, despite what Jordan may say now, I think he (and probably Chris) would rather be doing R1 breakfast but seems he was told that wasn't at all imminent so made the understandable move to go elsewhere. Doubt Greg will move off breakfast anytime soon as he's got a new contract and anyway no obvious replacement in line... They certainly have thrown some energy behind competing these last couple of weeks though.
