Part of the cuts announced by the BBC on Tuesday include 17 positions at Radio 1.

In addition, nine reporter posts at 5 Live will go, whilst Radio 1 and 1Xtra will no longer have their own dedicated news services, except at breakfast.

BBC News announced the loss of 140 posts altogether, which will be cut by the end of April 2013. They are part of the cost-cutting Delivering Quality First Programme, designed to generate 20 per cent savings over five years with the loss of 2,000 jobs across the BBC.

At BBC Radio 4, three or four current affairs pots will go, along with three reporters and two producers, plus annual funding will be cut by £500,000.

BBC Asian Network is to lose 15 posts and have its funding cut in half. News will move from Leicester to London with fewer bulletins but extra multi-media jobs will be created long term. Two general “BBC Radio News” posts will also go in the next 12 months, with more expected at a later date.

However, one new 5 Live reporter job will be created at Media City UK, along with four new reporter roles based in Newcastle, Birmingham, Cambridge and Plymouth.

so 5Live is effectively losing 4 posts, but 5 are being relocated rather than cut completely?

Also re: R1 and 1Xtra dedicated news services: Does that mean no more Newsbeat or Newsbeat going out simultaneously on both stations?

Wasn't clear on that either but I think it will just be the case that they simulcast Newsbeat on 1Xtra.

The simul-cast thing might be a bit chaotic, won't it? Because both DJs will have to stop at the same time...

Well, the're doing Newsbeat simulcasts on both stations at the weekends and that don't sound bad at all. Of course, it would be hard for Mills (because he's often doing news a few minutes later), but there would not be a problem for Fearne or Greg.

Some Commercial *spits* Radio stations run a similar system with the same news broadcast on all regional/local variants, and they deal with far more than 2 simultaneously. :)

Hell even 5Live usually has a jingle piece that kicks in under whatever's on so you and the presenters know news is coming up and can wrap up quickly.

This is now confirmed. It's going to really effect quality too.

If you listen at weekends you hear DJs cutting songs to go to the news. They'll now be forced to do that by day so they can time it right with 1Xtra.

I noticed that on Gemma's show at dead on half 8 she cut the song to go to the news
