PRESS RELEASE

Radio 1 & 1Xtra Controller, Ben Cooper, today announced changes and brand new signings to the Radio 1 & 1Xtra schedules.

From Monday 2 April Greg James will move to weekdays 4-7pm, swapping places with Scott Mills who also gets a new show, moving to weekdays 1-4pm.

Greg James said: "My dream job just keeps getting better and better. I can’t wait to get going with the new show!"

Brand new signing Jameela Jamil will be joining the station to host the Radio 1 Request Show which will be now broadcast on Sunday’s from 7-9pm.

Jameela Jamil said: "To say I'm excited is a major understatement - being offered the opportunity to join the Radio 1 family is literally a dream come true and I can’t wait to slip on the headphones."

Gemma Cairney will be taking over the weekend breakfast show 7-10am, moving over from sister station, 1Xtra where she has been presenting the afternoon show since January 2011.

Gemma said: "I arrived at 1Xtra just over three years ago a wide eyed puppy & soon became obsessed with all things radio. It will be really emotional, but I'm only moving downstairs to Radio 1 and I can't wait for all the new fun it'll bring."

Edith Bowman moves to a midweek slot, becoming the host of Radio 1’s Review Show on Tuesdays, 9-10pm, where each week she will host a guest panel who will discuss the latest new music releases.

In addition, Danny Howard, 24, from Blackpool, who was discovered through a Radio 1 talent search and opened the Radio 1 Ibiza Weekend in 2011, has landed a brand new show every Saturday 4-7pm, which will be called R1’s Dance Anthems with Danny Howard.

Specialist music strand, In New DJ’s We Trust*, will also get an exciting new line up with DJ’s B-Traits, Mosca, Jordan and Julio Bashmore hosting shows on a four weekly rotation.

There will also be some changes to the 1Xtra schedule. Sarah-Jane Crawford, currently hosting weekends 1-4pm will move to take over the weekday 1-4pm show, and a new addition to the network will be Adele, she’ll take the reins from Sarah-Jane and present the weekend 1-4pm show.

On the changes to the schedule Ben Cooper said: "These are exciting times at Radio 1 & 1Xtra. The latest changes are about attracting even more young listeners by bringing in new and fresh talent to the stations. At the end of last year we announced changes to the specialist music line-up, so I’m really looking forward to hearing the new line up in full when we launch in April."

The new schedule will come into effect from Monday 2 April 2012.

It will freshen things up and I'm delighted to hear Scott at work in the office. I guess it's all part of the big masterplan from Ben Cooper and I suppose it's better than how Bannister dealt with things. It's certainly the end of an era though - waking up with Moyles, going home with Mills.

This makes me sad. Scott has basically been demoted. It might shake things up, but this is still a massive slap in the face to Scott.

Aw come on it's the biggest radio station in the world and after at least 8 he's still going to be in the afternoons! Pretty good going I'd say. It's going to be a new challenge for him and hopefully will allow him to branch out into new projects too.

Actually quite sad and effected by this in an odd way. Drive always seemed the right place for Scott as the perfect combo with moyles on the breakfast show. Will be interesting to look at his tweets and what he portrays in them.

I did sense a bit of sarcasm in his tweet last night.

it makes no difference to me with scott moving, i'll still get to hear him and at least he is still on radio 1. i am delighted radio 1 has shown some balls and got a young dance dj in and revived dance anthems. since dave pearce left it's been missed. just as long as they actually play 'dance anthems' like dave pearce did all the way from the early 90's to today, and not 3 hours of fucking dubstep which is urban not dance.

the only problem is that they should of left the request show where it was and put dance anthems on a sunday night again. but haha! so much for 'switch'.

on the grid.

Though I think I'd prefer a Request Show seeing as Reggie's one stopped..

Err... the request show will be Sundays after the chart...

Could this be the reason why Greg has stopped doing handovers with Scott, who seems quite angry about this re:

I love Radio1 / Might move to Australia I love it there

Also will Beccy and TOTDS move with him? I'm not so sure... and IOBF RFTW and The wonder years will finish...

    • Radio 1 generation meaning??  Today's 10-30 yr-olds? I doubt it. They'll still know Pete Tong though, because he is rhyming slang!
    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
    • Just watched that advert and it made me realise quite how many 'big' specialist presenters there were back then
    • I've been reminded of this Radio 1 cinema advert. I remember being so excited to see it. The In New Music We Trust era. Everything felt so cool, even if they had Westwood.
    • Just Vick and Katie on Wednesday (and presumably Thursday as well).
    • Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false.   Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global?  He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC.  Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful?   It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going.  Roman and Jordan have the same management team.  Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC.  They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer.  They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him.  If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker.  Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan.  None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones.  It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.
