I've got a £1000 drunken bet on with my mates that i can get to the Sydney Opera House in Australia from Leicester in UK with a budget of £200 hitch hiking across europe and Asia trying not to spend anything unless absolutely necessary and i have till new years 2015 to do it.

can i do it ?

or have i been an idiot...

Difficult to say really. It's obviously very risky but it would undoubtedly be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so if you've done your research and think you have a chance of doing it then by all means go for it. And even if you don't succeed you can always follow in the footsteps of Dave Gorman, Danny Wallace, Tony Hawks et al and publish a bestselling book about your experience :P

So save the last dance

For me my love 'cause I

I see you as an angel freshly fallen from the sky...

Europe should be easy to hitch hike across however once you reach the Asian side of the Turkish boarder it's going to be very difficult if you can get into India it may be possible or Dubai or Qatar, but going through Iran & Iraq is out of the question, the same for Africa really many of the middle parts are not really the best places to be, yes many people in both Africa & Asia are kind & generous people but & it's a big BUT many aren't.

a flight at £470 is the cheapest i can find.

best advice is go to a travel agent & tell them what you need, i would also say to your friends that as soon as they have a photo of you at the Opera House you have to receive the money either by wire or bank transfer.

a travel agent may be able to help you get a flight from somewhere else that is much cheaper & you have to fly but honestly i think it will have to be from europe, unless you go via the USA in which case you have to fly there anyway, i dunno £200 thats tough, £300 maybe.

depends on the actual terms agreed regarding the bet, you give me £200 (etc )as collateral i buy you the ticket £470, when you get home you give me £300 out of the £1000 you won, you get £500.

on re-reading your post, if you have to hitch hike, you will have to go through Europe, then through Russia & into China & then see if you can get a flight from Thailand or even into Malaysia & fly from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, i think China will be hard as in the north they are desperately poor & the infrastructure isn't to good either like the roads etc, i dunno about southern Russia or even Kazakhstan.

if you left now, you could probably walk there :|

the bet was that i have £200 to get me to sydney using just that for food or if i need to transport if it cheap enough i have 4 years to sort everything out but it a real bet we have shook on a £1000 i'm not worried about europe that much just from thailand down to australia through the philippines may be tricky and getting into oz there very tough on immigration

do you know if you can hitch hike on boats to get to other countries like fishing boats

well Micheal Palin did when he went on his trips, but he was working for the BBC & they had a lot of help from merchant shipping company's, i very much doubt that you would be able to do the same, this was also 20 years ago & the rules would have no doubt changed.

as long as you have a valid visa for OZ is should be ok, i still dunno £200 for food & places to stay which you will need is going to be tough, how long will this take to do, the longer it takes the more it will cost, if it takes one month you will only get £6 a day, two months & it's £3 a day & £1.50 for three months !

it took Michael Palin 141 days to go from Pole to Pole & yes he went round the world in 80, even though it's further but he was at sea for a fair number of days & he had a lot of help & these were in the days when it was safe to travel through certain countries.

have a look at his site http://www.palinstravels.co.uk/

you need A LOT more advice then what we can give you here, you need to talk to specialist travel agents that do this kind of thing, i hope you can do it, i really do, but i don't think it's possible, a flight for £200 maybe but not for food & shelter on the way.

well maybe if the media were to get involved;

guy has a bet to get to Sydney with only £200 in his pocket, can he do it ? watch the series here on Sky One.

i DO want to be positive, but you really do have to go to someone like http://www.trailfinders.com/ http://www.nomadictravel.co.uk/ http://www.aitoagents.com/ & just see if they have any idea's

most shipping goes from the USA there is a map here that shows the shipping lanes, it's not the best but it's all i can find on the routes http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2010/01/global-shipping-map/ another one here http://downtothesea.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/shipping-lanes1.JPG & http://billjaquette.net/top-major-shipping-lanes-and-ports-in-the-world/

Interesting question. http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-flights there's some ideas on this page about how to get some cheap flights. Chippy has a good suggestion too. You could see if there's any air courier jobs going: http://www.ehow.com/how_2095671_job-airline-courier.html

  • 4 months later...

Are you still doing this? :P

Surely you could get some free stuff of people? Someone could lend you a vehicle or boat? Maybe your best friend's ex's aunt's third cousin twice removed lives in Australia / Thailand / anywhere and could help you out? :)

OMASM. Radio presenters are like fruit. Matt is my kumquat and Scott is blatantly my orange.

    • Jesus christ, Olivia Rodrigo was around 3 years ago!?! I thought she was only born in 2019. Anyway. They are doing it to rival commercial networks, on the main 2 lists anyway with rotating them more. Which all in all is a pit of misery. I'm sick to bloody death of Stick Season, it's an utter bag of mediocre wank that makes me even prefer James Blunt circa 2005. Radio 1 still is more expansive however, loved stuff they play and make their own early days, like Jungle Back on 74 like last year.  They can't lose doing stuff that, or else they become bland like everyone else. They have done that for many years though. I heard a song on a March 2001 aircheck from Chris Moyles recently and rediscovered a song by Kings Of Convenience, called Toxic Girl. Totally lost over 25 years but totally love it like it's new. Radio 1 has always played the big time pop stuff since your nan was 3. But they always have and still do throw something on the playlists that isn't what everyone else has. I hope they continue to do that as it sets them apart.
    • I think they are looking too much into this and need to get a proper job where you have to get up at 5am.
    • Zayn's current song isn't on the R1 playlist so would be odd for him to do an interview I guess, not sure either would want it?
    • You have both presented together before your show on Capital. Have you spent time together as friends since, or is the reunion like getting to know one another all over again?   I’m a long time listener in my mid 30s and now outside the R1 target audience age… Chris is into barbecuing and Jordan is into air frying, have you both noticed a change in the other since the days of R1? And are you under any pressure to be on trend at Capital?
    • What do you both miss most about your time at R1?
    • How are you finding the early mornings, and having your afternoons free? Was it easy getting to grips with a different desk and play out system? Do you have any upcoming OBs and anything else exciting planned for the show that you can exclusively share with Unofficialmills? 😀
    • This research is based on the DJs’ voices - pitches, speech rates and fillers like ums and ahs they use - so it’s not affected by sound effects. But yes according to the report Scott is listed as a Radio 2 DJ instead of Radio 1.
    • The playlist has definitely got a bit narrower this year, it feels like. Artists like Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Drake and  Doja Cat seem to be played in every show, even when they’re not on the playlist. Other artists who get a few plays a week, such as Niall Horan, always seem to have the same song played, in his case, Heaven. Whenever they dive into Calvin Harris’ backlog it always seems to be Slide and Promises pulled out, even though they’re two of his least upbeat songs. Most songs they play seem to have been from the 2020s, instead of throwing in a few older hits like Capital does, which is something I think they could do.
    • Jamie Laing out of the schedule for Going Home today - Lauren Layfield in with Katie Thistleton.
    • Bit of a scoop getting an exclusive interview with Zayn, I wonder why he decided not to do Radio 1 too?
    • Who are your favourite artists that are not anywhere close to being on the playlist?   Are there ever songs that make you want to start pulling your hair out (in general, no need to put anyone on blast lol)?
    • Hi to both, miss you loads on radio 1 and hope that you’re doing good at capital 🙏   What was the background to your exits from Radio 1? Do you have any regrets from how it ended?    This one’s more to Jordan, but do you enjoy TV presenting more than radio? What are your targets in TV?
    • I do think if you distracted by talking you wouldn’t put a podcast on in the car. To me unless you used to driving so often that you don’t get distracted and drive for long distances it feels suited to podcasts. I find it odd including Ryan Seacrest or Howard Stern as I don’t know who listens to them in the U.K. Can imagine Chris Evans distracting and annoying on radio in general same for Chris Moyles. I can imagine Scott as not too distracting maybe even in his radio 1 days although if I was a driver I could find Innuendo Bingo or Funny Business distracting based on the humour of the features but Scott’s got a very soft gentle tone of voice doesn’t come across as loud or in your face. I think when you are on in the working day where people maybe listening as said in car, in the office or tradespeople on a job listening to the radio theres a certain style needed
    • Yes, good on you doing your own music blog website. I get that point with the 100% all new music can be alienating but think thats more if the station were to do more totally new bands and artists the thing that new music shows that preceded Jack have always have reflected big artists national and international who have been around for a while be that few years to a decade or two whether playing new stuff from artists to Dua Lipa, Coldplay or Nia Archives. I find its bizarre how music curation has changed a lot in the last decade as what I like of what radio can do well is that ability to hear an audible description of a new artist and information about their music with sense of opinion and thought from the presenter and an interview with the switch to sound features and spotify playlists. It’s not that same magazine effect that Steve Lamarq and Jo Whiley could be an audible magazine show like the NME to Zane Lowe’s radio 1 show complimenting Gonzo which Saunders has revived for MTV
    • I would argue against that, I once drove my car into a post listening to Scott Mills.  But it was back in the day, he was doing Stupid Street with Chappers at the time!
