I am inclined to agree with you. If you want to go into teaching, or further research, yeah, go to Uni. But these days, the reality is people are getting degrees, are in thousands of pounds of debt, and come out to no employment anyway!!

I think one thing DavCam has said that is right is getting those who claim unemployment benefits to do 'volunteer' work, this way they get experiance and reduce the amount of money councils need to spend... however he got the amount of time wrong...

Ahhh, slave labour. Why should councils pay employees to work when you can sack them then get them back as unemployed 'volunteering' jobseekers to do the same job for free? Reduces costs coz slave labour is free. The Tories never cease to amaze me.

I don't think that people should be forced to do it/ have their benefits cut, it's just it should be easier to volunteer, as it should be something that is respected by employers....

I wasn't allowed to volunteer when I was a jobless bum because it apparently took up time that I could have used job seeking. Never mind that there's only so long you can spend looking for a job on a morning.

Obama has screwed it up, he wanted China to revalue their currency;

when we (other countries) buy stuff from China with Sterling (example), the Chinese keep the Sterling & don't recirculate it like we do when other countries buy stuff from us (UK) so China has billions maybe trillions of foreign currency, so anyway Obama didn't want this, so the Chineas decided in the end to move towards what Obama wanted, & do you know what they did with all these dollars, pounds & euro's

they started buying gold, silver, diamonds & other precious commodities, thus forcing up the price of gold etc but at the same time de-valuing the dollar etc :giggle:

the VAT rise is NOT going to make any difference !

do not take any notice of what the office of fiscal studies, or whatever that new government set-up, they are LIEING to you.

I don't believe any shops should be closed or shorter opening hours over the next few days.

We live in a 24/7 society and it astounds me that as a nation we close down because of a religious thing. I am more than happy to be an athiest and my life is just fine without having religion in it, yet every year it is forced upon those of us who are athiest or believe in other religions which don't celebrate christmas. I have yet to experience any other religion/faith/belief which takes over in the way christmas does.

If people wanna call me scrooge or bah humbug thats their choice, I just really can't stand this time of year. Fortunately this year it falls on a weekend so I shall finish up tomorrow and be back at work on monday morning just like every other week of the year.

I agree 100% + with you!! I can't stand this time of year either. Well, the middle of it isn't so bad, I find. ... the between Xmas and New year, but the actual specific 2 days I cannot stand. And, like you, I actually wanna go out on Saturday to the shops, and I can't. I have managed to lie to family and say I am going elsewhere, but I am not!!

I have rented a horror movie this Xmas, which should go nicely with my vodka and cranberry drink.

Maybe in this country it does, and the US, but I will bet there are countries in the Middle East that get just as 'taken over' during Ramadan and such, and it will be some of the same ones that don't get taken over by Christmas.

I was referring to what happens in this country. I'm well aware there will be other countries which are taken over by religious events, and yes those will almost certainly be in the Middle East. However what goes on there doesnt concern me and to be honest I think people in that country will take the religious element of it far more seriously. Christmas is supposed to be all about Jesus and all that stuff, but I'm willing to bet less than half of all those who celebrate it are actually religious.

Christmas is a bit of a joke really, people just use it as an excuse to throw parties and get wasted and it turns into a competition to see who spends the most on people or who can be the best host to friends and family. All it really does now is cost people money and generate a lot of hassle and mess.

This is true, though doing that with Christmas would mean we have a country of Pagans.
