BBC Radio 1Xtra announces today that Twin B is to serve up a tasty new weekday breakfast show (7am-10am) as part of a major revamp of the station’s schedule.

Twin B moves to Breakfast after a successful stint on the weekend morning slot and he’ll bring his cheeky energetic style to breakfast, aiming to get young people up and ready for school.

Current breakfast show hosts Trevor Nelson and Gemma Cairney get a well deserved lie-in as they now go solo, with Trevor moving to the 10am-1pm weekday show featuring the 1Xtra Live Lounge and big name interviews and Gemma taking on weekday afternoons from 1pm-4pm. Westwood stays in the 4pm-7pm slot.

Twin B says: “I’m super excited about the prospect of waking up the nation on a weekday. I love 1Xtra! There’s no other institution around with more passion for the music it plays. It’s an honour to be asked to present such a massive show. Trevor and Gemma have left some huge shoes to fill…and I’m only a size 9! I can’t wait!”

Trevor Nelson says: “I’ve enjoyed my time on the Breakfast Show – Gem and I have had a unique dynamic, but I am ready for a lie-in and eight hours sleep a night! With my new show I will be broadening the style of music I play as well as introducing a live music element and doing more in-depth interviews.”

Gemma Cairney adds: “Getting up at 5am day after day, gaining a life long friend in Trevor, a silver Sony for our efforts and learning what’s really involved in the craft that is radio over the past two years has been immense. I love 1Xtra and I’m ready to go solo, so bring it on and expect havoc!”

Ben Cooper, Deputy Controller, BBC Radio 1Xtra, says: “We’re making these changes from a position of strength after we secured record listening figures in the last quarter. We want to continue to refresh our offer in order to grow the station and increase the number of young listeners we’re bringing into the BBC via a digital platform and we believe these changes will do just that.”

As a result of these changes, rising star Nick Bright moves to weekend breakfast (7am-10am) from early weekday breakfast; Charlie Sloth is set to front Saturdays (10am-1pm); CJ Beatz Sundays (10am – 1pm) and Sarah-Jane Crawford shifts to weekend afternoons (1pm–4pm) from weekend breakfast.

In addition, from 1am-3am every Saturday night/Sunday morning a new show is being introduced. ‘The Specialists’ will allow a rotation of the DJs who host the 10pm weekday genre shows to be showcased across Radio 1* and Radio 1Xtra, with every six weeks a guest DJ from an up-and-coming genre being featured too. A further new two-hour ‘The Mix Specialists’ show from 3am-5am on Saturday night/Sunday morning will also allow a rotation of all the weekday 1am mix show DJs.

The introduction of the new schedule means that Rampage (Mike Anthony and Treble T); Max and Ras Kwame will leave the station. Seani B will no longer host a regular weekly show but will continue to work with 1Xtra in the future.

Ben Cooper, says: “They have all made significant contributions to Radio 1Xtra and I thank them for that. I wish them all well for the future.”

The new schedule begins on Saturday, 8th January 2011.

Hmm. Not too sure what to make of that. I often sing praises of Twin B on here but I'm not sure if he's breakfast material. And I won't be able to listen if he's up against Moyles, not that I'm ever awake to listen to Moyles anymore these days anyway. I wish him the very best though. CJ Beatz on Sunday mornings, replacing Max with Gemma, losing Ras Kwame and Rampage - I'm not convinced. No Ronnie Herel on weekends, silly rotation of presenters and genres on the the flagship 10pm specialist shows - bad move. Although Trevor at 10-1 and keeping Westwood and Mistajam in their slots are all good decisions.

Charlie Sloth on Saturday mornings - for real?! Now I'm a Charlie Sloth fan, but waking up on a Saturday morning with the jokes and light-hearted nature of Twin B cannot be replaced with "the best looking fat man in the world" (according to him) assaulting my ears! Especially when his hiphop show has only just finished 6 hours earlier.

The 1Xtra schedule was looking its strongest ever. After about 3 years away from the station, I returned as a regular and happy listener about a year ago. I'm not sure the station will remain #2 on my radio preset listings. I hope the new line up grows on me, but I'm far from certain I'll be as regular a listener as I am now come the new year.

And some questions have been left unanswered. If Ras Kwame and Seani B are leaving, then what's happening to the 3-5am and 5-7am slots on the 1Xtra/Radio1 simulcast? Hmmm..

In addition, from 1-3am every Saturday night/Sunday morning a new show is being introduced. The Specialists will allow a rotation of the DJs who host the 10pm weekday genre shows to be showcased across Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra, with every six weeks a guest DJ from an up-and-coming genre being featured too. A further new two-hour The Mix Specialists show from 3-5am on Saturday night/Sunday morning will also allow a rotation of all the weekday 1am mix show DJs.

Fabio & Grooverider (currently Saturday night/Sunday morning 1am-3am) move to a new slot on BBC Radio 1 – Sunday into Monday, 2-4am.

That still leaves 5-7am blank

Ooooh, I knew I missed something. Still not convinced though but it doesn't sounds as bad as I originally thought. But moving Fabio and Grooverider is a huge blow, probably my favourite show on Radio1 and 1Xtra - even better than Gilles Peterson. Great for a Saturday night, not so great for a Sunday night/Monday morning.

Hopefully we'll be hearing more of Fabio & Grooverider covering on 1Xtra daytime as they're definately worthy of it. They'd go a great job covering Westwood's weekday show especially now as Twin B who normally covers will soon have the Breakfast show.

Max has the sack

Shame, wonder where she will go?

I was thinking this. She might not be to everyones liking but it's a shame she's on her way out. Really bad move by 1Xtra management. Galaxy, Kiss and Choice are the obvious places I'd imagine to see her pop up. The Choice schedule is looking really poor at the moment (another reason why 1Xtra needs to up its game) so I'd expect to see her there sometime soon. Not that she'd improve the station, but it wouldn't quite be downgrading it.

I've always thought of the 1Xtra management of being quite trigger happy when it comes to getting rid of people. Sarah Love, Jason & Iyare, the girl who did TXU (Charmaine something? :S), DJ B amongst many others. And now Ras Kwame who's been at the station since day 1, Rampage, Max (who it once seemed was set for big things on R1) and Seani B.

On a seperate note, I'd imagine Nick Bright will be covering for Twin B on the breakfast show with Ronnie Herel covering for Trevor Nelson. And there's no mention of who'll be replacing Nick Bright on early breakfast.

I just remembered that the Nations shows were moving to Sunday night into Monday morning midnight -2am. So now I am even more confused at Fabio & Grooverider moving into that 2-4am slot after the nations - talk about different ends of the genre line - cant wait to see how they fit together.

I think it was simply a matter of "oh no where should we put them - we need a 2 hour slot" "oh look we've got this 2 hour slot that will do for now until their contract runs out or listener figures drop!"

    • Less so with 5 Live. But with Nihal, Nicky Campbell and Mark Chapman get what you are saying.6 Music does have that with Huw Stephens, Mary Anne Hobbs, Gilles Peterson, Marc Riley and Mark Radcliffe
    • Agreed, Martha seems to quietly taken over as host of the Tuesday Bass and Big Beats show that Annie Nightingale did would be good to have some promotion to be done for her show. Agreed with this on bank holidays on a Radio 1 dance day inpaticular would be quite good to have Sarah Storey, Jaguar, Jeremiah Asiamah, Charlie Tee and Martha presenting. I always felt that in Christmas and New Year previously having Victoria Jane to do a Future Soul take over playlist.
    • To be fair to him, this week and next week he’s on his podcast tour which was arranged well before he started on R1. After that I would guess he’ll start being on everyday?
    • It’s Jamie’s dream of a lifetime to be a full time Radio 1 presenter apparently, but he can only do it 2 or 3 days a week.
    • Radio 1 generation meaning??  Today's 10-30 yr-olds? I doubt it. They'll still know Pete Tong though, because he is rhyming slang!
    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock. 6th May schedule has updated to show that the Radio 1 Big Weekend Shows will now be the following: 6am-10am 10am-2pm 2pm-6pm 6pm-8pm Still no presenters listed.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
