Moyles brands Fearne Cotton's task fake

Surprised nobody mentioned Fearne abrubtly cutting off Chris during the handoff Thursday morning after she went on another whinge-fest about the bet relating to the upcoming "Student Week".

After complaining (for the fourth day in a row) about having to wear the same clothes and basically bragging that she was lucky never having had to go to uni, Chris called her out on the fact that she changed her outfit shortly after her show started yesterday, and had also changed for events like book signings and TV tapings earlier in the week. He went on to tell her he was sick of the put-on celeb double standard and that what she was going through, with her book deals, clothing line, TV shows, and perfume launch, put her totally out of touch with what students go through at uni and that she had no right to complain.

Fearne kept trying to Chris to stop talking, and eventually she dropped his studio feed altogether and launched into her first song with a blaringly loud "Radio One" ID. To me, she genuinely sounded angry.

he was quite ritght to point this out as she was quite blatently out to misinform the listeners into thinking she was wearing it all day every day. He was also quite right in saying it is very patronising to Students, all of which i know are clean and don't smell at all! She did sound pissed off though and his "Oooh Dear" was very amusing!

Capes :)

I'll need to listen back to it, what day was it on?

I'm more than a little sick of listening to her nonsense about student week and getting this student card. If she really wanted 1 then she could have got 1 easily enough, 1 of my old managers enrolled with a college or uni (can't remember which) just to get the discounts that all students seem to get with the card. Don't get me started on those discounts either!

Its not as if she'll ever use it, or get away with it without questions being raised. While the likes of Chris and Dave make their jokes about being only 24 and in touch with youth culture etc etc, I think Fearne genuinely believes she's still in her teenage years. Silly really.....

As said above, it's here.

oh !

he is turning into Chris Evans now.

all celebs have double standards, Moyles cannot relate to students either considering his position.

Chris is right, however.....

it isn't Fearne's idea to do this challenge, furthermore if she is pretending to be a student for a week, she wouldn't be on the radio either & if she has to promote her book, perfume, clothes etc then should she go back on these commitments that would have been planed much longer ago than some R1 producer who came up with this idea last week, same goes for the TV show (Celeb Juice) she has a contract to do the show & is she supposed to go back on it ?

maybe Fearne should have said 'no' i'm not doing this challenge, this would then have upset the bosses at R1 (i would think) Moyles needs to get of his high-horse, as far as i am concerned he has made his decision to leave R1 & is now going to act like a arrogant prick in his last few months, in exactly the same was as Chris Evans did.

his moan about not being paid is a perfect example of this, yes i agree like everyone else that ha was right to go on the radio in the way he did, however 'nobody' NOBODY would have let it go on for three months, you wouldn't go to your boss (or whoever was in charge) tell them & let it go, & then a week later when you still haven't been paid go back & be told "oh don't worry, it will be ok" & keep doing this for months, come on

seems to be the perfect way to cause a huge rift between himself & the R1 (BBC) bosses, thus a public way to get out of the BBC (when he has already made up his mind) moaning about not being paid on your own radio show goes far beyond, not turning up for the show when you haven't been paid.

seems to me that he is stuck between a rock & a hard place at the moment & we are seeing the failings about of somebody who has lost their way.

comming to a station near you ?

"Moyles can relate to students either considering his position. " I presume you mean can't?

The difference is, he isn't doing some ridiculous stereotypical challenge and pretending he is.

yeah, typo.

i don't know much about this challenge, maybe she is only doing the show in the same clothes ?

the challenge is pointless i agree, however all Fearne was doing was going along with it, she even said in the clip "well i have failed then, haven't i ? tell me now so i can take this stupid dress off"

the way Moyles goes on to Fearne, regarding her clothing, book, perfume etc sounds more personal to me, aimed towards Fearne :|

the producers of the show (Alex i think it is) should be the ones taking the blame really, Fearne seems to have just gone along with it, basically because it's her job.

I want to get you started.

And no, that isn't innuendo.

Firstly, I know there will be a fair few students on here who won't agree with this but to be honest I really don't care. It angers me so so much that students get discount on things that those of us who have jobs and earn a wage don't.

I can hear it now, "but they're in education, they don't have as much and need to save money whereever possible!" Well, yes they don't have as much money, but as far as I'm concerned, TOUGH! The idea of further education is to get more qualifications, or develop skills to hopefully get the job they want. Its not compulsary (despite how much my teachers banged on about it when I was coming to the end of high school), they are a student because its something they have chosen to do.

At my work, both staff and students get discount, admittedly staff get a bigger one, but both get discount nonetheless. I fully agree with staff discounts in any company or organasation, as they work hard to make the company run, and to make it what it is. Exactly what do the students contribute that they deserve to get a discount on everything when the rest of the general public, whether employed or unemployed, pay full price?

If someone chooses to do something or to follow a certain path, they have to accept any hardships which come as a result. Please don't bother trying to argue with me on this anyone, its my opinion, as far as I'm concerned its not something I'm prepared to enter into a discussion about.

it is their choice to become a doctor (for example) i think the shops etc make more money in the long-run out of the discount, i agree with what some of cxx666 has posted, however what really gets me is people who go to Uni as they think it's the place to go & just do pointless degrees & end up in debt that will eventually get written off as the qualifications they got don't lead to a higher paid job so they can pay back into the system.

i didn't go to Uni, i do think i missed out in a way, but i wouldn't have really known what to have studied & would have ended up with loads of debts, so i'm a bit 50/50 on it

Alan, how do you define a pointless degree? A subject you don't necessarily approve of or particularly like or respect yourself doesn't mean it's pointless. People go to university not just with the view of getting a particular higher-than-average paid job at the end of it, but to gain a deeper and more thorough understanding of whatever it is they choose to study; or with the view of producing their own piece of research in whatever specialist field, etc. But not with the ambition to get themselves into debt, or burden the country and it's taxpayers with their debt, or to leave jobless and with a 'pointless' degree.

For those who want a 100% guarantee of a job at the end of their degree (assuming the ConDems don't get too carried away) then a Medicine degree or a degree in Dentistry is the aim, but as I said earlier there are more reasons than just job prospects when it comes to making these kind of decisions.

well how about these for starters - http://www.toptenz.net/to-10-useless-college-classes-degrees.php or 'BOWLING INDUSTRY MANAGEMENT' - http://www.vinu.edu/cms/opencms/academic_resources/majors/factsheets/factsheet_0008.html

what i am saying is that, nowadays people seem to go to Uni because they think they have to, maybe they are not that academic & go on to do degrees that don't really lead anywhere, for example; my cousin is doing a degree in Photography now then my dad is also a keen amateur photographer & he has been on a few day courses over the years now really how much can really be taught about this subject in a Uni setting more to the point what will the certificate say at the end ? basically that he can take photographs :|

how many people really know what they want to do in life (job-wise) at any age

this is a very good example of what i mean (sunscreen song) Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your

life…the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they

wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year

olds I know still don’t

i'm no saying people shouldn't go to Uni, as i have said i didn't go myself, i do in a way wish i had as i do feel i have missed out on something, i'm not really sure what, but i do, i just don't get ending up with a huge debt in the ten's of thousands & not being able to get a job that pay's enough to clear the debt over time, i'm not saying only people with money should go to Uni, however i don't think that it should be free for everyone because of the cost to the tax payers & what they actually get beck from it in way of people getting higher paid job's to pay back, this also creates a bigger problem not 'everyone' can be earning 30,000-40,000k + a year, so i don't really know what the solution is.

Just listened to it, and Moyles was quite right. She is living nothing like a student and it was quite a pointless task to do. She does go on about it a hell of a lot too.

i doubt Fearne had much choice, really.

There's certainly nothing wrong with studying photography. I'd imagine there's more to it than just learning how to take pictures of a professional quality, but understanding the history and the technology of the equipment, and studying the works of renowned photographers.

And about that link of 'Top 10 Useless Degrees', David Beckham Studies, or Football Culture sounds really interesting. If I remember correctly it's not actually a degree itself but a module within a course. But I'd imagine there's more to it than it may seem on the surface - studying the cultural, sociological, political, economical etc aspects of the world's favourite sport. Philosophy - Most certainly not a useless degree! Understanding the world we live in today from the perspectives of a diverse list of distinguished and legendary figures such as Karl Marx, Plato, Emile Durkheim, Noam Chomsky, John Stuart Mill, Adam Smith, Max Weber, Aristotle etc. If you think they're useless, then surely English, or any other language for that matter, would be more useless (but of course they're not).

Art History? Useless? Is this a joke? Not something that interests me personally, but certainly not useless. History is a vast subject that engulfs pretty much everything. There are historians who specialise in art as there are those who specialise in media and communications, war and conflict, politics and society, buildings and structures, royalty and aristocracy, transport and settlements. I could go on and on. Understanding the past is incredibly important when it comes to understanding the present and preparing for the future. Historians are hugely valuable.

As I said in my earlier post, anyone who simply thinks of university as a place where people go to get a well-paid job afterwards quite frankly have no understanding of what universities are about. They're research-led institutions where experts teach students who share that interest, want to engage in the studying of that particular specialist field, become more knowledgable in that field and become experts themselves while conducting their own research and feeding off the research that has been conducted by researchers before them. Whether that's as specialist as child psychology, political ideology, golf studies or football culture; the current experts of those subjects have every right to share that knowledge with their students who share that interest and want to better their knowledge and understanding. It is important we support those who are eager to learn and research and be the next experts and teachers of tomorrow - even if they don't share the same interests as us.

Absolutely brilliant post Kyle. Top stuff, there are some really narrow minded and ill advised opinions on this thread.

As for the original thread Fearne's feature is patronising and fake. I as a student am quite capable of dressing myself in different clothes each day. I know there are student stereotypes but come on guys we can at least work a washer / dryer. Not to mention the fact that she wasn't even doing the task anyway, just faking it for radio purposes. Moyles loves Radio as a medium, it's one of his great strengths. As a true ambassador for the medium of radio he has every right to challenge people who are manipulating the medium and the people who listen to it, as in this case Fearne is. It is for this reason why TV imports such as Cotton will never even be as close to being as good radio broadcasters as the likes of Chris Moyles, Scott Mills, Greg James and Huw Stephens. True radio broadcasters with a passion, for you guessed it, radio.

yes, but that's not what people are told is it ?

they are told that by going to Uni you will get a better paid job (etc) take photography, yes i completely agree that there is nothing wrong with learning about the history & great photographers, however learning this won't make you a great photographer the image of Omayra Sanchez for example shows this http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/4231020.stm it's whats in the picture that counts, the image is everything, & more importantly the time & the place.

as for the football one, yes maybe sports science for teaching,

Philosophy however is more complex, thus we could spend years debating it ;)

there is nothing wrong with what you have written or your views many are valid & i agree with most of it, & yes those going on to teach & become scientist's , doctors etc but to work in a bank ?

it's not the students it's the system.

i want to make it absolutely clear i am NOT having a go at students

When people ask me if I went to film school I tell them, 'no, I went to films.' - Quentin Tarantino

    • Do you prefer doing Capital Breakfast to Radio 1 or the other way round?
    • Jesus christ, Olivia Rodrigo was around 3 years ago!?! I thought she was only born in 2019. Anyway. They are doing it to rival commercial networks, on the main 2 lists anyway with rotating them more. Which all in all is a pit of misery. I'm sick to bloody death of Stick Season, it's an utter bag of mediocre wank that makes me even prefer James Blunt circa 2005. Radio 1 still is more expansive however, loved stuff they play and make their own early days, like Jungle Back on 74 like last year.  They can't lose doing stuff that, or else they become bland like everyone else. They have done that for many years though. I heard a song on a March 2001 aircheck from Chris Moyles recently and rediscovered a song by Kings Of Convenience, called Toxic Girl. Totally lost over 25 years but totally love it like it's new. Radio 1 has always played the big time pop stuff since your nan was 3. But they always have and still do throw something on the playlists that isn't what everyone else has. I hope they continue to do that as it sets them apart.
    • I think they are looking too much into this and need to get a proper job where you have to get up at 5am.
    • Zayn's current song isn't on the R1 playlist so would be odd for him to do an interview I guess, not sure either would want it?
    • You have both presented together before your show on Capital. Have you spent time together as friends since, or is the reunion like getting to know one another all over again?   I’m a long time listener in my mid 30s and now outside the R1 target audience age… Chris is into barbecuing and Jordan is into air frying, have you both noticed a change in the other since the days of R1? And are you under any pressure to be on trend at Capital?
    • What do you both miss most about your time at R1?
    • How are you finding the early mornings, and having your afternoons free? Was it easy getting to grips with a different desk and play out system? Do you have any upcoming OBs and anything else exciting planned for the show that you can exclusively share with Unofficialmills? 😀
    • This research is based on the DJs’ voices - pitches, speech rates and fillers like ums and ahs they use - so it’s not affected by sound effects. But yes according to the report Scott is listed as a Radio 2 DJ instead of Radio 1.
    • The playlist has definitely got a bit narrower this year, it feels like. Artists like Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Drake and  Doja Cat seem to be played in every show, even when they’re not on the playlist. Other artists who get a few plays a week, such as Niall Horan, always seem to have the same song played, in his case, Heaven. Whenever they dive into Calvin Harris’ backlog it always seems to be Slide and Promises pulled out, even though they’re two of his least upbeat songs. Most songs they play seem to have been from the 2020s, instead of throwing in a few older hits like Capital does, which is something I think they could do.
    • Jamie Laing out of the schedule for Going Home today - Lauren Layfield in with Katie Thistleton.
    • Bit of a scoop getting an exclusive interview with Zayn, I wonder why he decided not to do Radio 1 too?
    • Who are your favourite artists that are not anywhere close to being on the playlist?   Are there ever songs that make you want to start pulling your hair out (in general, no need to put anyone on blast lol)?
    • Hi to both, miss you loads on radio 1 and hope that you’re doing good at capital 🙏   What was the background to your exits from Radio 1? Do you have any regrets from how it ended?    This one’s more to Jordan, but do you enjoy TV presenting more than radio? What are your targets in TV?
    • I do think if you distracted by talking you wouldn’t put a podcast on in the car. To me unless you used to driving so often that you don’t get distracted and drive for long distances it feels suited to podcasts. I find it odd including Ryan Seacrest or Howard Stern as I don’t know who listens to them in the U.K. Can imagine Chris Evans distracting and annoying on radio in general same for Chris Moyles. I can imagine Scott as not too distracting maybe even in his radio 1 days although if I was a driver I could find Innuendo Bingo or Funny Business distracting based on the humour of the features but Scott’s got a very soft gentle tone of voice doesn’t come across as loud or in your face. I think when you are on in the working day where people maybe listening as said in car, in the office or tradespeople on a job listening to the radio theres a certain style needed
    • Yes, good on you doing your own music blog website. I get that point with the 100% all new music can be alienating but think thats more if the station were to do more totally new bands and artists the thing that new music shows that preceded Jack have always have reflected big artists national and international who have been around for a while be that few years to a decade or two whether playing new stuff from artists to Dua Lipa, Coldplay or Nia Archives. I find its bizarre how music curation has changed a lot in the last decade as what I like of what radio can do well is that ability to hear an audible description of a new artist and information about their music with sense of opinion and thought from the presenter and an interview with the switch to sound features and spotify playlists. It’s not that same magazine effect that Steve Lamarq and Jo Whiley could be an audible magazine show like the NME to Zane Lowe’s radio 1 show complimenting Gonzo which Saunders has revived for MTV
