September Schedule Changes

Ooh no, best move they ever made to ditch Nihal. The 1-4 slot was brilliant with Sara, unlistenable with Nihal, and now one of the best shows on the station (again) with JW.

I don't think there'll be much change this year- as long as Sara'a back it'll be great. If she took over Vernon's show it'd make weekends rather amazing with a Sara-Jo-Reggie lineup. I would like to see less Matt and Dev, and a lot less Greg and Fearne (especially) but that won't happen. I find Reggie really entertaining, though he seems to fallen out of favour- but as I mostly only hear daytime at the weekends it's fine with me if he stay there!

Annie Nightingale Facebooked this yesterday

That's interesting news. To me a 'project in September' says a new permanent show.

I would like to see more Nihal too. Now that the Asian Network's future is in jeopardy the Trust appeared to want some of it merged back with Radio 1 and 2 (or that was the case for 6Music). I quite enjoyed his weekend show knowing that Sara was unavailable.

I think this year will be about specialist music judging by Annie's comments though. They seem to have an overhaul a year after day time is tinkered. Dave Pearce left and Jules was moved in 2008. We didn't see those radical changes last year.

I agree with everything you've said there. Nihal is criminally underused at the present. With regards to Annie Nightingale call me a cynic, but I expect giving Radio 1's oldest DJ a bigger role, as well as Moyles a new contract will do no harm in promoting the forced upon "anti ageism" agenda.

Think:

Matt Edmundson moves to Early Breakfast.

Dev gets weekend Breakfast.

Sara Cox takes over Vernon Kay and the Lie In.

Edith to 6Music to cover Lauren laverne's maternity?? Wouldnt be particuarly surprising. Edith would thrive on 6music- Cerys Matthews cant do the maternity cover this time round. Lavernes baby is also expected in Oct so the timing is perfect.....

i would love to see radio 1 get a new dance dj in with some knowledge of older tracks too so they could bring back dance anthems, it's all gone to prove that getting rid of dave pearce and bringing in switch was an epic fail. bringing pearce back now is out of the question, but with jules and tong getting older they need a new dance dj at least. they can't expect annie mac to do everything, and she dosen't seem to have any knowledge of classic house/trance at all. it's just like she only got onto the dance music scene in 2003 or something. whoever comes in could restart dance anthems on a sunday night, it was a big part of what made radio 1 cool in the late 90's & early 2000's.

on the grid.

That would be nice. I would prefer Sara over Vernon on the 10am slot but I don't know where Vernon would go instead :(

I think Vern would be great on Friday drive, he loves his dance music and Wonder Years is a bit like the lie-in. This could free up Scott to do the chart full time too.

I thought that actually, although I think I'd prefer Jo Whiley or Cerys she was excellent covering Nemone who's the big weak link in the 6music schedule imo.

I have a feeling that Edith could take over the Review Show as she has been covering it recently. It could be an easy way to free up the Weekend Breakfast slot. Nihal could then stick to the Asian show or do another show.

Like many others, I agree that the changes will almost certainly happen in the specialist line-up this year. I just hope that Judge Jules (the only trance DJ left) doesn't leave, unless he is replaced by another trance DJ. Pete Tong is also unfortunately a candidate to go because of his age and wanting to bring in new DJs. I can see Andy George & Jaymo replacing him, but I would rather that didn't happen.

I also agree DC that Annie Mac claims to cover 'all the corners of the dancefloor', yet she doesn't like/doesn't play any trance music and the house music selection is limited.

thing is trance has gone off the boil, even the likes of tiesto and jules are moving away from it bit by bit. but it's like annie mac has very limited knowledge of tracks that were around before she started to work at radio 1. all this 'in new music we trust thing' can be offputting sometimes, there are some great tracks from years gone by that have yet to be heard by the new generation that's warming to dance music. and that's what was so good about dance anthems. pearce would play the cutting edge stuff from the current time, and he would follow it with a big track from 10 years ago.

on the grid.

Nice to see Moyles stopping a bit longer.

And who's to say that anything will happen with the schedule long term? They might want to wait a year or 2 longer before making any changes. As some people have already said, some of the presenters have only been in there current positions for nearly a year, and it seems stupid moving them about again just because 'we always move people in september'.

Doubt it. They moved Dev from weekend breakfast to Earlie's, would be daft to move him back after a year.

It was 1xtra breakfast but can't see it happening as early mornings and weekend breakfast is pretty much the same in terms of prestige - both are on before most people wake up.

No he did R1 weekend breakfast too before Edith.

I remember the 'why the hell are you awake' jingle on weekend breakfast.

I like Cotton.

The audience hasn't declined but their hasn't been a signficant increase in attracting new target audiences, such as the BBC had hoped for when they installed Fearne and Greg in their positions.

Wonder why?...

10 till 4 = School, College, University, for most of it.

So, when so we find out what the changes are?

More Matt Edmondson, please.

Be careful what you wish for. I have a feeling that Matt will be a co-host with Ferne during mid mornings. :(

I hope that Ferne moves back to the chart with Reggie and Sara takes over. Hopefully Matt will disappear, as will the 1xtra takeover :D. The review show might go or will be scaled back, but I don't think there will be many changes.

Nemone usually covers for Lauren on 6Music then a man (can't remember who because I usual turn the radio off at 1).

How do you scale back a 1hour show?

I don't agree with the idea that the target audience aren't around to hear Fearne and Greg. College and uni certainly don't work to the same hours as school. Fearne would be the Radio 1 Breakfast Show for most students.

I want more rob da bank! Loved his shows on SUnday nights and his A-Z this monday (earlier) as part of the storys thinsg was good - maybe that could become a permanent fill for that slot? Or bring him in on weekday night over Giles Peterson or Nihal on a Tuesday to do it!

Also Vernon has to be a cert to go? His presence has been so much less at the station the last 6 months, and the slot is needed to keep talent like Matt Edmondson. Where would Huw go? Surely not weekend Breakfast, as thats for people on the way in our out! Huw is already established! Natural position would be Grimmys show but that wont be free until cCott or Moyles leave as Im sure Grimmy will take one of those shows.

Over my dead body will they get rid of Gilles Peterson! :x

And I think getting rid of the Asian music show Nihal does is pretty much out of the question due to the imminent closure of BBC Asian Network and the BBCs need to cater to that audience in otherways across their other existing networks.

Would be great to hear Rob Da Bank covering for Zane or Nick Grimshaw for a week or two though, or on the next set of 'Bank Holiday Takeovers'.

QUOTE]

Please don't let Edith near the review show again, Nihal is much better, Edith was stumbling through it, didn't spend enough time talking about the music and just was no good at it. I hope the review show stays with NIHAL, it is one of my favourite shows and it does attract some quite big names.

Also I would like to see either this year or next more Huw Stevens, he is great and i don't know why they don't use him more. Also like Andy George and Jaymo and have covered for Edith before and I'm not a massive fan of Edmonson so wouldn't mind them on weekend breakfast or Earlies. This is probably unlikely but I would love Max (1xtra) to move to radio 1 for me she would be an ideal replacement for Fearne....

I can Dream (sigh)

I think we actually share that dream of having Max on Radio1. She's simply amazing. I'm really sorry to say that but instead of Greg James I listen to her show on 1xtra. Would be really great if she could join Radio1. I love the way she talks and brings entertainment over the air waves.

I couldn't disagree more. She is well below average. I'm not Fearne's biggest fan but her replacing Fearne would be an almightly step down.

Yeah, what is going on with this announcement?

If, as we suspect, most of the changes are happening in the specialist areas they may be struggling on contracts for new DJ's or DJ's that perhaps they no longer want?

Or they actually dont have a clue what they are going to do and havent made their minds up yet!

    • Less so with 5 Live. But with Nihal, Nicky Campbell and Mark Chapman get what you are saying.6 Music does have that with Huw Stephens, Mary Anne Hobbs, Gilles Peterson, Marc Riley and Mark Radcliffe
    • Agreed, Martha seems to quietly taken over as host of the Tuesday Bass and Big Beats show that Annie Nightingale did would be good to have some promotion to be done for her show. Agreed with this on bank holidays on a Radio 1 dance day inpaticular would be quite good to have Sarah Storey, Jaguar, Jeremiah Asiamah, Charlie Tee and Martha presenting. I always felt that in Christmas and New Year previously having Victoria Jane to do a Future Soul take over playlist.
    • To be fair to him, this week and next week he’s on his podcast tour which was arranged well before he started on R1. After that I would guess he’ll start being on everyday?
    • It’s Jamie’s dream of a lifetime to be a full time Radio 1 presenter apparently, but he can only do it 2 or 3 days a week.
    • Radio 1 generation meaning??  Today's 10-30 yr-olds? I doubt it. They'll still know Pete Tong though, because he is rhyming slang!
    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock. 6th May schedule has updated to show that the Radio 1 Big Weekend Shows will now be the following: 6am-10am 10am-2pm 2pm-6pm 6pm-8pm Still no presenters listed.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
