BBC to rebrand Radio 1Xtra

The BBC's digital radio station 1Xtra will reportedly drop its "Love Black Music, Love 1Xtra" slogan as part of a rebranding exercise to bring it closer to parent network Radio 1.

According to The Guardian, the rebrand will see 1Xtra adopt two new straplines - "Xtra RnB" and "Xtra Hip Hop" - to better indicate it as Radio 1's urban music spin-off. The station will also get a new logo blending the two station's branding.

The rebranding of 1Xtra is part of the BBC's new strategy for its radio stations, including the controversial planned closure of 6 Music and the Asian Network.

Under the new strategy, the corporation wants to create and support a series of brand extensions for its five main radio networks - Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio 4 and Radio 5 Live.

To complement Radio 1Xtra and Radio 5 Live Sports Extra, Thompson wants to rebrand Radio 7 as Radio 4 Extra. Senior BBC sources also suggest that 6 Music could become Radio 2 Extra to placate strong opposition to its closure.

Over the next 18 months, the BBC Executive will more closely tie 1Xtra's editorial schedule to parent station Radio 1 and grow its modest audience to a "sustainable scale".

1Xtra currently has a relatively low weekly reach, which has led to calls for it to be shut instead of 6 Music. Tim Westwood, the station's most high-profile DJ, recently complained that he had been broadcasting "to absolutely nobody for the last three hours - it's soul-destroying".

The BBC said that 1Xtra's new "Xtra RnB" and "Xtra Hip Hop" straplines will help create a "front door" for the station's wider musical playlist, which includes dancehall, dubstep and house music.

A BBC spokeswoman said: "These two genres should act as the front door into the rest of the station, giving the audience a clear message about the core offering and a route in, where we can then inform them of the range of music 1Xtra has to offer."

One word: Why?

I've listened to 1Xtra a few times before, but it's annoying that you have to go on the Internet to listen to it! I get the Westwood podcast, but I would listen to it a lot more if it was on proper radio :/ Or even if it came out as an app for the iPod/iPhone, I wish Radio 1 had it's own app for listening to it. :L

You need to download the Fstream app.

Messing about with the brand for the sake of it. I am not black and I'm not your average black music listener - but there's still appeal to me. I am more likely to listen to something knowing it's linked to Radio 1 than caring about "Xtra RnB" and "Xtra Hip Hop". I feel promoting people like Trevor Nelson, Mistajam and Westwood would do more favours than going with these new slogans.

As much as I love 1Xtra, and enjoyed 1Xtra live, it makes you wonder with all these simulcasts what the point is when they want to close 6Music which isn't simulcasted elsewhere.

I agree. If it was more linked with Radio 1 with the presenters side of things I'd be more likely to listen.

I was genuinely unsure if she knew, seeing as she didn't know about print screening etc.

I really don't like the music, so I don't listen, the presenters are OK, a bit sub-standard for the BBC...

Half the music on 1Xtra is the same as Radio 1!

And what was with the XtraJedward thing??

It's as much of a news story as the 6Music rebrand.

It's not just "black" music anymore - it's just hip hop and RnB

And the reason they're airing adverts with it in, is because it's already happened.

Put 1Xtra on and it's had a complete re-do of the station sound.

I disagree. Choice FM play hiphop and R&B. 1Xtra daytime playlist includes funky house, soulful house, drum and bass, dubstep, dancehall, fusion, trip hop, bashment as well as hiphop and R&B.

but to be fair the rebrand seems to be based around them changing to just/mainly Hiphop and R&B, though if stations like ChoiceFM already do that I fail to see the point as that coverage in commercial radio was the claim they made about 6Music as part of the recommendation to scrap it. All very confusing.

I agree. To me, 6Music (and to a certain extent 1Xtra) are amongst the services the BBC should be providing. It's public service broadcasting as it should be, knowledgable presenters and ambassadors of their specialist music genres playing non-mainstream music for music fans. These sort of stations (including R1) as they are wouldn't survive under commercial ownership.

    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
    • Just watched that advert and it made me realise quite how many 'big' specialist presenters there were back then
    • I've been reminded of this Radio 1 cinema advert. I remember being so excited to see it. The In New Music We Trust era. Everything felt so cool, even if they had Westwood.
    • Just Vick and Katie on Wednesday (and presumably Thursday as well).
    • Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false.   Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global?  He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC.  Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful?   It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going.  Roman and Jordan have the same management team.  Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC.  They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer.  They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him.  If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker.  Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan.  None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones.  It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.
    • Wow, surprised he signed a new contract in September but it says a lot about Jordan that he continued to a very high standard throughout last summer/autumn if this was all going on in the background.
