The annoying thing about BBC3 and BBC4 are, with the amount of good new material they produce each week, they could easily merge to save costs, but with both channels being so very different branding would be impossible!

BBC4 have been ordered away from comedy, too in this new report apparently :(

I hope Charlie Brooker finds a new home!!!

as for no changes at radio-3 & 4 well they are the most expensive stations to run & they are basically full of crap, radio-3 is poor in comparison to Classic FM & as for radio-4 well where do you start !

as for radio-7 well thats is just as bad as radio-4.

It's taken me a while to try to work out if this post of yours was intended to be ironic, or is merely idiotic. Jury's still out.

Radio 3, whilst it might be niche, still caters to tonnes of license payers and is valuable.

What really surprised me was your criticism of Radio 4. Although John Humphries, Womens Hour, The Archers, Desert Island Discs and and The Shipping Forecast might not be exactly up your street, many people do listen to, enjoy and benefit from them. Myself included (well, not The Archers, as I'm not allowed - boyf doesn't like it).

I really thought that you were into decent comedy Alan. So much of it began on Radio 4, and with any luck, so much more will be brought to us. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_comedy

You can be responsible for handing the PR4L her P45 too!

As for Radio 6music and the Asian Network. I think it would be a big mistake to axe these two. Radio 6music has attracted some excellent presenters, and when I've had it up to here with things like Fearne, the varied music provides a very welcome break.

I listen to the Asian Network sometimes too. Although I'm not Asian, I like the music and Nihal has some pretty interesting discussions on his show.

Have signed all the petitions. Fingers crossed.

We Need Answers & News/Screenwipe are some of the best things to come out of BBC 4 recently. There's no other place for them really.

Surely Newswipe hits the audience of BBC3 and really should be the sort of thing on BBC3? It might take away the illusion BBC3 is trash.

radio 3 a niche ?

classic fm is a far better station (i know this because i listen to it) its a much fresher sound & more engaging to younger listeners there is also a better line up of dj's on classic, radio3 on the other hand is just so old & stale sounding, the bbc isn't supposed to be competing with commercial stations which is exactly what radio3 is doing with classic.

as for radio4, well i don't watch any soaps on tv so im not going to listen to them on the radio, comedy programs well lighthearted stuff won't do much for me, now it it were like mock the week or had stewert lee, chris rock or milton jones doing comedy then i may listen, cannot believe people who need to listen to the shipping forecast ie sailors still use it when they have all this technology at hand to give upto the second information (my grandad used to be a sailor & he had access to this) the fact is that radio4 costs a huge amount to run & it seems to me that the bbc is more & more being aimed at old people.

surly you know how much i support the bbc & don't want anything cut from it, but these are my views from my perspective, cutting 6music & asian network to save six million pounds, well why not just cut radio3 & 4's budget by three million each ?

everyone is saying that 6music & asian network shouldn't close but how are you going to save the money ? at least i'm saying what i would cut to save money.

The News Quiz on Radio 4 is very similar to Mock The Week. Milton Jones has his own series on Radio 4.

I expect everyone at Radio 1 will also be worried at this news, whilst most 6music DJs will prob move to R2 or off air altogether a sizeable chunk of altenative and djs like Lauren laverne, George Lamb etc will prob move to R1s schedule. Which means room will have to be made somewhere for them.
Tragedy also goes the other way round: For many Radio 1 DJs (Jo Whiley, Zane Lowe, Huw Stephens and in fact most of the specialist DJs), 6music would be the natural place to go if Radio 1 decided to end their shows. Not, they have to find another place to work. And I can't imagine anyone of them would enjoy working for commercial Radio.

unique...

thats was where they got the idea for Mock the Week from originally i thought.

EF4L your comments are as ignorant about R3 as the Tories saying R1 is a commercial station. TBH The perfect public service broadcaster would be R1 / 6music fused together...6Musics daytime with R1s alternative schedule and switch programming.

R3 plays mostly classical music all the other stuff should be on R4, if you like classical music then Classic FM is the station to listen to, & don't forget that R7 plays comedy, drams & spoken word stuff also.

best thing that could come out of this is for Lauren Lavern to take over Greg's show on R1 !

Little clip from Lee's Google profile. Do your research Alan.:

'With Richard Herring, Lee wrote material for BBC Radio 4's On the Hour (1991), which was anchored by Chris Morris and was notable for the first appearance of Steve Coogan's celebrated character, Alan Partridge, for which Lee and Herring wrote much early material. After a disagreement with the rest of the cast, Lee & Herring did not remain with the group when On The Hour moved to television as The Day Today and their material was excised from an official release of the radio show in the mid-'90s (though a 2008 CD release would see it re-instated).

In 1992 and 1993, he and Herring wrote and performed Lionel Nimrod's Inexplicable World for BBC Radio 4, before moving to BBC Radio 1, for one series of Fist of Fun (1993). This was followed by three series entitled, simply Lee and Herring. These shows mixed sketches with live links and music, in a format that Radio 1 seemed to favour at the time (other classic examples of such include shows by Chris Morris, Armando Iannucci, and Simon Munnery in his guise as "Alan Parker: Urban Warrior"). Fist of Fun moved to television for two BBC Two series, and was followed in 1998 by This Morning with Richard Not Judy, which featured material in a similar vein, but was notable for being broadcast live in a Sunday morning slot.'

'In 2006, in addition to his directorial contribution to Talk Radio, he gigged regularly and appeared on television and radio, in – amongst others – Armando Iannucci's, Time Trumpet, as a version of himself thirty years in the future looking back and commentating on the present day. The show ran on BBC2 between August & 6 September 2006. Also in August, Lee presented a programme in the Five series Don't Get Me Started. The documentary discussed the issues of blasphemy, free speech, religious censorship and the rise in protests from religious groups over perceived attacks on their faith. This was of course of some interest to Lee, especially considering his experience in the Jerry Springer -The Opera controversy. (See above) He separated from his long standing management company, Avalon, for reasons undisclosed, and appeared on the BBC Radio 4 quiz Quote Unquote'

Chris Morris = comedy genius in my eyes. Chis Rock? are you having a MF-cking laugh?

Leave Radio 4 alone!

what about now ? & what's wrong with R7 ?

as far as i am concerned R3 & R4 cost way to much money to run & to be fair listening to comedy on the radio is as much fun as listening to snooker commentary on the radio.

how this descended into a discussion about R3 & R4 is beyond me, its supposed to be about 6Music & Asian network, if i think that R3 & R4 should be forced to make cuts then that's my opinion & i will stand by it, debating it isn't going to make me change my mind one little bit :)

You are though Alan. The perfect little Daily Fail reader. Everything is wrong unless you say so. Open your mind dude, seriously.

as i have said time & again i will back the bbc to the full, yet i cannot understand why R3 & R4 cost so much, they seem very poor value R1 has had to cut back, not heard about R3 or R4 i did see that a load of people who work for R3 & R4 were moaning about cuts when it was talked about last year sometime, all i'm saying is that the bbc could easily cut three million pounds from R3 & R4 & use that money saved to keep 6Music & Asian network going, at least i'm prepared to suggest cuts to the budget or stations.

maybe i shouldn't bother to post my own opinions, i should just agree with everyone else.. saves getting moaned at all the time.

:)
