Have to say if Jordan is gone then can't see myself lasting too much longer with Radio 1. Some of the best DJs seem to be sidelined time & again when new roles come up (Katie, Matt & Mollie) and many of those I still listen for are nearer the end than the start of their Radio 1 careers. Can't see Vick staying around much longer with her changing life circumstances these last few years and the likes of Greg and Matt surely won't be on Radio 1 in a few years time.

Bloody hell - did not see that coming at all. Really bad news for Radio 1. Jordan was one of their very best and presumably must have been poached by somebody else. And as for Jamie Laing being his replacement- ugh! He was bad enough as maternity cover for Mollie King so for him to suddenly get such a plum role is a real slap in the face to the other DJs. Surely Katie should've had first shot at the Going Home slot and if not here then Matt and or Mollie.

Intrigued to see what changes as a result of this happen to Radio 1 Dance - got to honest as a dance music fan while I'll listen to a fair chunk of the live stuff on Radio 1 if I wanted to hear a bit more dance I'd usually venture to Capital Dance rather than Radio 1 Dance. There's no substitute for live programming and live presenters there's a lot more of it on Capital Dance than presently on R1 Dance. Capital Dance felt more curated with its own presenters and playlists whereas R1 Dance feels like a dumping ground of repeats and playlists from overnight that you can just as easily get on demand.

Seems odd (even though they are probably fairly cheap to run) to launch new services while other areas like local radio continue to be cut and cut. Plus there is an argument these new services are already covered to an extent - Bauer (through Kiss and Absolute) and Global (with Heart) already have decade stations and you have Capital Dance which probably covers much of the ground Radio 1 Dance does. I guess though it gives further competition and choice for listeners which is no bad thing. It does seem like the spin-off station that was probably the most distinctive in Radio 1 Relax is the one to go when it probably feels the most like the sort of station a broadcaster like the BBC should be covering elsewhere.

Yep a few times on Radio 1. Did the Whoooo game a few times and Bangers on Scott's show and have done the Something Songs on Going Home twice. For the non-live features (Whooo game and Something Songs if people were wondering) producers ring you a day or two beforehand. They let you know you're likely to be on and just check if you're available, that you have something to talk about (e.g. for Something Songs a reason for choosing the tracks or for the Whooo game have some Whooos to hand) and will sound OK on the radio. They're always kind and friendly. And then day of the show you record and have a bit of a chat with the presenters. Have been on with Scott & Chris, Jordan, Vick & Katie who were all absolutely lovely and exactly what you hope they'd be. Something like Bangers is live but largely similar - producer will chat to you before and help to think about topics you can chat about on air and then you're live with Scott & Chris. Would highly recommend it - especially the pre-recorded features as you have plenty of preparation time and they are I'm sure well used to nervous callers or editing out any pauses or swears. Plus with some of the features like Complete The Year really the feature is the star so you can never go far wrong. It's basically the next step up from messaging in to tell them to 'keep the tunes coming'.

From likely to unlikely: -James Cusack to get a full-time show. Surely only a matter of time and he's been on cover increasingly frequently recently. -Maia Beth takes Future Pop full-time. She's pretty frequent cover on there already and it's an easy way to get another new DJ onto the station. -Vick to leave Life Hacks. She's stopped travelling up to Manchester on a regular basis for it plus was away over the summer and not sure how much longer she'll want to give up her Sundays. Katie & Lauren Layfield too feels a very obvious duo to have on Life Hacks. -Dean & Vicky split up. It's been 18 months and that show just hasn't stuck and frankly both sound better either solo or alongside other DJs. Think Vicky might be the one to lose out if so - she's weekend cover way more frequently than you'd expect a weekday DJ to be (Charlie and Vick's Saturday and Sunday shows being permenant roles). -One of Matt Edmondson or Vick Hope to leave Radio 1. Would happily have both remain but does feel as good as he is as if Matt might be on borrowed time on Radio 1. Plus Vick has so much else going on outside Radio 1 and if she's not doing Breakfast there's nowhere to go on Radio 1 post Going Home that wouldn't be a demotion. -Jordan to get Breakfast. Wouldn't be shocked if Greg called it a day for a new Breakfast show come September. 6 years would be a great innings and could see him either taking another show on Radio 1 or leaving Radio 1 entirely - between Tailenders, his books with Chris Smith, shows on Radio 4 etc he has plenty to keep him busy. If so Jordan in a male-female duo is the obvious choice - suspect it would be Katie but don't rule out Mollie King. -If above did happen then don't rule out Dean getting Drive in some form. Aled really seems to rate Dean for some reason - he very quickly rose up the ranks and him doing the New Years week cover on Breakfast seemed like it might have something more to it - especially given Jordan & Katie were on Going Home that week so seemingly available that week.

RIP Annie - a trailblazer who paved the way for so many female DJs on Radio 1 and across radio. A undoubted Radio 1 legend whowas still championing new music even until the end of last year. Some wonderful tributes from the Radio 1 family past and present - was nice to her even Mistajam over on Capital Dance doing a lovely tribute to Annie today. And echo what others have said Matt & Mollie handled the news superbly.

'The 8th with Charlie Sloth'. Whooooooo - can't say I exactly miss him from Radio 1.

One of the great Radio 1 jingles too. 'BBC Switch' whooooo

The two standouts for me at the moment are Matt & Mollie and Going Home with Vick & Jordan (& Katie). Shows packed with content with presenters who clearly get well and work superbly as duos and who get the tone spot on. I think Mollie plays a big part actually in M&M being as strong as it is - the show is noticably weaker in my view when Jamie Laing has been on instead of her. And Mollie has actually been really strong when paired with Jordan & James Cusack at points this year. Katie too is great and whether solo or alongside Vick or Jordan has such a likable presenting style that shines throughout. Surely a big daytime slot awaits soon if she wants it? The Breakfast shows is still strong and Greg one of Radio 1's best but I am starting to tire of the Breakfast show just a tad. Maybe it's just a case of becoming too familiar with the show after so long - there's only so many times you can listen to 'Yesterday's Quiz' or 'Rehearsing for the worst thing' without it becoming a tad samey . 'Ten to Ten' too does risk quickly going from fun to giving 'Going Home Song' PTSD flashbacks. Whereas I feel Greg comes into his own on those fun events and games R1 do every so often.

Jordan & Mollie have been great this past week - one of the biggest pieces of praise you can give to both is that you wouldn’t know it’s been their first time on-air together for years. They played off each other brilliantly and don't take themselves too seriously but still sound excellent. Makes you wonder what they might be like with a few more shows together. I started off the week thinking if Vick is dead set against doing Breakfast post-Greg (as seems to be the case) then Jordan & Katie was the obvious option. That's still very much the case. However, I wouldn't complain if it ended up now being Jordan & Mollie - Katie could easily take Jordan’s spot on Going Home (any combo of Katie, Vick or Jordan just works) plus if Mollie is on Breakfast full-time it creates a proper slot for Maia Beth on Future Pop who is low-key fantastic and deserves a regular slot.
-
Radio 1 wise I'll always try to catch at least some of the following if I can: -Greg's show -Vick & Jordan -Future Pop -Katie Thistleton -Matt & Mollie & Party Anthems -Danny Howard When it comes to other stations, I give Scott a listen on Radio 2 and throw Capital Dance on quite a bit and might sometimes give Absolute or 5 Live a listen. I would say though quite a lot of my listening outside Radio 1 these days is often podcasts whether that be The News Agents, Tailenders or something else.
-
Not a fan unfortunately. Their show just feels like a bit of a non-event to be honest which is such a change from when i was Scott & Chris and there seemed to be so much content and chat in that slot. You compare Dean & Vicky's slot to Matt & Mollie's show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday which is vastly superior and there always feels a lot going on and the show full of energy, laughs and life. Agree with others too that I prefer Vicky when she's been on with other DJs instead whether that be James Cusack or Emil Franchi. I get too that the 'outside London' factor maybe played a part but I'm not sure why Dean & Vicky were promoted quite so rapidly to daytime. It felt far too soon for both. For my money some of the other 'Christmas intake' DJs like James Cusack, Emil and Sam & Danni were and are stronger DJs. Plus while it was probably an impossible task for anybody to replace Scott & Chris but Matt & Mollie would've been the safe choice and done a decent enough fist of it in the short-term. Plus if Radio 1 really wanted a weekday show outside London then Katie Thistleton is right there or you could've your nerve until Sam & Danni were ready if they're doing a non-London show anyway.

Arielle Free turns up to Dance Anthems drunk
coffeeandgin replied to xxladybarefootxx's topic in BBC Radio 1
Also while I have my doubts it will come to this, if Arielle were to be sacked from Radio 1 her professional DJing career does seem to be thriving and she's been doing DJ sets all over the place so she does have plenty of other stuff going on outside of Radio 1. -

Also while I'm sure the remarks when made are tongue-in-cheek, you do get the sense from little jokes and remarks that others R1 DJs like say Jordan or Greg make that Arielle can sometimes be a bit more "hard work" than some other Radio 1 DJs. Though that's not to say she's not a lovely person and as I say I enjoy her Radio 1 shows. -

I think Charlie did as well as she could in that scenario - we don't know quite how Arielle made it to air but as soon as it became clear that Arielle was still a little drunk Charlie did fade her down without making too much of a show of it and was able to quickly get another track on. While I do quite like Arielle, as others have said she’s by no means irreplaceable on Radio 1. Her normal show is off-peak (and a perfect one to put new talent on) and there’s a lot of very capable alternative cover options for dance shows rather than Arielle whether that be Jerry Asiamah, Charlie Tee, Connor Coates or James Cusack. -
They're all pretty attractive these days. On the male side it has to be Danny Howard. Very attractive bloke. Plus Greg seems to have a lot of female fans. And some of the Newsbeat guys are more handsome too than I expected. On the female side again a number of very attractive DJs. Mollie King seems to be effortlessly beautiful - even in a life jacket yesterday she still looked stunning. And similarly Vick Hope is incredibly glamorous. I guess the great thing with radio though is that it's the great leveler. You still have to be good at the job at the end of the day - you can be as attractive as you like but the listeners can't see you and if you're not good you'll be found out. Maya Jama is the perfect example - absolutely stunning but as a radio DJ not good at all.

You know you're a Scott Mills fan when...
coffeeandgin replied to Jono's topic in The Scott Mills Show
When your first reaction to hearing the words Fathers Day is to say Sunday. -
Yep to be honest whether Jordan is straight or not is his own business at the end of the day. Plus it's clear Vick & him keep some parts of their private lives off the radio - many a time you'll hear the phrase 'Jordan/Vick doesn't talk about those things' when it comes to their relationships and there's only ever passing comments about Vick's relationship to Calvin Harris that you wouldn't catch unless you knew about it. I don't listen to it too regularly but when I'm heard him on 'Help I'm Sexted My Boss' he does come across as accepting and open-minded with William Hanson being a big friend of his.

Will Innuendo Bingo return to Radio 2?
coffeeandgin replied to UnofficialStark's topic in The Scott Mills Show
Wouldn't shock me if it made a return - but probably in a slightly different form to its Radio 1 days. No doubt though some of the usual Radio 2 moaners (the sort who haven't accepted that the schedule no longer has the likes of Johnny Walker and the late Terry Wogan front and centre) will be up in arms about how juvenile and pathetic it all is and how they'll move to GHR or Boom Radio. -
Pleasantly surprised I predicted that - fits in well on that slot. I'm available if anybody wants this week's lottery numbers. Radio 1 playing new music by Madonna & Kylie on the same day does feel a bit 'U OK Hun' and them trying to go 'happy now!' to those saying they sideline older female artists. The Madonna one in particularly I'd say is an 'experience'. It's grown on me a little but is very guilty pleasure and could understand people hating it.

With Clara, I have no doubts that she's an excellent broadcaster in general but I always find her shows just 'fine' and nothing more. She does all the things you'd want a Radio 1 presenter to do very well but I'd struggle to tell you what makes a Clara show different to any other show on the station. Her shows are basically a 6/7-10 fine enough to listen to but can pale in comparison to stronger shows and Jack's show after does seem to have a bit life to it. I do wonder that if Radio 1 knew Scott would leave a year after the 2021 changes if they might have kept Clara in her morning slot instead.

What can sometimes feel a bit odd is when you'll hear an older song by an artist played by Radio 1 when they have a newer track out that sounds on brand for Radio 1 that isn't play listed. Am slightly surprised even if it doesn't make the main playlist that the Kylie track hasn't popped up on a show say like Party Anthems where it might fit welll in - even if not the original version there surely is some sort of remix they could find to play. Whether or not Radio 1 play it there does seem to be a bit more hype & monentum with 'Padam Padam' than there has been in a while with a Kylie track.
-
The classic Radio 1 playlist debate. I guess the higher Kylie goes in the chart the more notable Padam's absence is from the playlist. But the playlist is always a bit of an enigma - there have been songs right on brand for Radio 1 and doing well in the chart that don't make the playlist. Whereas some Radio 1 favourites seem to be able to jump onto the A-List at will (a few names instantly pop to mind).
-
Also as much as I rate most of them some Radio 1 personnel do have some verbal tics that get right on my wick and I can't help but notice. 1) Arielle Free's 'playing that one for'. I can understand why she probably does it on Early Breakfast where it's a smaller more dedicated listenership but it makes it sound like she's constantly doing an unofficial 10 Minute Takeover throughout her show. 2) Callum Leslie is great on Newsbeat but he in particularly seems to pretend he's talking to somebody before going to a clip/segment. Fine if it's a Newsbeat reporter but when it's something like 'quite the display. Right, Jurgen Klopp?' before then going into a clip of a Jurgen Klopp interview it just sounds ridiculous. Though no doubt there are many other DJs with similar but these two particularly spring to mind. And to be clear I like both.
