Would love to know the full story behind the Going Home situation eventually. But we seem to have ended up in a decent place - Katie has long deserved weekdays so it's great to finally see her get a role. She seemed the obvious replacement for Jordan on his departure. I do wonder if part of this is down to the backlash to Jamie's appointment or maybe even off-air pilots not being great with just Vick & Jamie. Otherwise why not announce Katie joining when you announced Jamie becoming part of Going Home - it would've quelled a fair bit of the backlash for sure. Do wonder if it may be a case though that one of Vick or more likely Jamie might then disappear after a year and you have Katie then with whoever remains. Does mean Katie is moving to LONDON?!!

Seems like they really agreed given Katie's move to Going Home! Didn't realise the power I hold. I'll just need to have a word with them on the playlist choices now. Well part of this thread is rendered irrelevant then given the moves announced these past 24 hours. ? I can't see Nat & Vicky necessarily matching the quality of Katie's show but the Anthems/00s/10s show if it's being extended across the weekend should at least hide any weaknesses to an extent.

I seem to recall some on here not huge fans of the Matt & Mollie pairing during the Weekend Breakfast days and certainly the Dev & Alice pairing seemed the slightly more popular of the pairings created in 2018. But the move to afternoons seemed to signal a real turnaround and it's a cracking show - has that 'Scott and Chris' type feel to it and has often had me in tears of laughter. Fajitagate in particular remains one of my favourite Radio 1 moments on any show https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ2DL9AJRpd/

If the news is true then fair to say none of us would've had how Radio 1 has gone so far in 2024 on our bingo cards. Surprise after surprise. First Jordan's departure then Radio 1's choice of replacement and now Matt & Mollie moving onto daytime when I think we all thought the chance had been and gone. I do wonder if he's primarily on Absolute though these days - been quite a while since I last heard him on Radio 1 and it seems now that if they need somebody to cover in Manchester then Nat O'Leary or James Cusack these days are first port of call.
-
Do wonder if further changes are afoot - first that Sun article and also noticed on James Cusack's Instagram that he's at Broadcasting House even though the schedule doesn't have him covering on Radio 1 the next few days. Hope that Sun article is true - Matt finally making it to weekdays! Matt & Mollie easily one of the best shows on Radio 1 too so very much deserving of weekdays. Thinking about it too it seemed odd to give the Red Nose Day challenge to a weekend presenter (though I'd rather hear Mollie on Radio 1 all week than quite a few others) - normally it's a weekday person a la Greg or previously Scott and Jordan. Wouldn't shock me as then at least it's the same slot Monday-Sunday that's done from outside London. But presumably too it would have implications for the Live Lounge if that were the case. Though what would that mean for RMC? Time will tell I guess

There was a bit of a discussion on the chat about this a few days back so thought it deserved a thread of its own. Have to say come next week I'd say actually I prefer the 'weekend' (Friday-Sunday) line-up to weekdays. Katie and Matt & Mollie are more than weekday worthy and both shows are very listenable and add in Breakfast where you either have the main man in Greg James on Fridays or future stars Sam & Danni on Saturdays and Sundays and you know you'll have good quality shows throughout. The Friday line-up in general is pretty ideal from my side - Greg followed by Katie (with both having an Anthems half-hour each) then Matt & Mollie, Party Anthems, Jack Saunders and then Danny Howard and the rest of the dance team. All great stuff from my side with most of Radio 1's best. The music played too seems to subtly change too from Monday-Thursday. Monday-Thursday Radio 1 are very wedded to the playlist and you can hear songs quite a lot and at the best of times I can find the Radio 1 playlist marmite. Whereas it feels on Friday that even on the normal shows there's more bangers played and you'll also hear a few Radio 1 favourite tracks from the 'recent past' tossed in . Using last Friday as an example you had the likes of Foals's 'The Runner', HAIM's 'Want You Back' and Post Malone's 'Circles' all played in one show and on another MK's 17 and Doja Cat 'Say So' - all still a great fit for Radio 1 and fairly recent but normally you'd be lucky to hear one or at most two of those during a show Monday to Thursday. Even Capital seem to be willing to throw in more 'recent past' tracks these days during Monday-Thursday then Radio 1 are. Other than maybe heading off to Mistajam during the Chart there's little reason for me to switch from Radio 1 on Fridays. Party Anthems is an absolute gem in the schedule too. No show is ever going to be 100% music I like but I normally find myself wondering why more tracks from it aren't on the Radio 1 playlist proper.

Roman Kemp announces departure from Capital
coffeeandgin replied to TheSaviourisHere's topic in Radio
The difference in treatment though is telling - Global can often be seen as more cold and clinical but there was a lot of warmth with Roman’s announcement he was leaving and allowing listeners to enjoy the last few weeks. I get the situation with Jordan is a little different but surely you could give him a last show or if Radio 1 are really that frightened of the C word being mentioned you can even pre-record a segment (so you know he won’t mention Capital by name or anything) where he can say a proper goodbye on air. Though given Adele Roberts got the same treatment as Jordan despite not even moving to a competitor and having gone through so much personally in the last few years the Radio 1 treatment for departing DJs these days seems to be of the ‘there ain’t no monorail and there never was’ variety. -
My money is on a random Northern bloke - let's call him for the sake of argument Jordan N or maybe even J North.

Chappers back on House of Games
coffeeandgin replied to xxladybarefootxx's topic in The Scott Mills Show
Nope he's not officially joined Global as far as I know - but he is doing a new podcast for them alongside Gabby Logan for a twice weekly sports spin-off of the popular 'News Agents' podcast. Big fan of both so will absolutely give it a listen. But the press release was very clear it's in addition to his existing work so seems like he'll still doing MOTD 2, 5 Live a few days a week, League Cup presenting for Sky and even a BBC Sounds podcast. And he's excellent on all of them. Long may he continue. -
Not exactly a ringing endorsement then for the future of Radio 1. Maybe some of them will improve over time but they don't seem particularly to be at the calibre of say Katie, Arielle or Matt who are a perfect 'safe pair of hands' on whatever show they are given. Nat seems to feel like part of that Manchester group including Dean & Vicky who were promoted too far too soon . Can't help thinking as time goes on that those 2022 changes were a bit of a misstep. If they wanted shows outside London then Katie Thistleton easily could've done a show plus within a year anyway Sam & Danni were doing shows outside London. Also Ore seems to be the go-to 'emergency' cover at the moment. Whatever happened to Gregor Davidson?
-
Given how ultra-quick Radio 1 were to remove any or all mention of Jordan from the upcoming schedule it is quite funny how aside from Megamassive Monday they still have the 'obit' style black BBC logo for next week's 'Going Home' rather than just updating with the usual Sam & Danni image.
-
Indeed for me rather than sticking to Going Home I'll probably stick to a mix of Bush & Ritchie on Absolute, Mistajam on Capital Dance with perhaps some Sara Cox on Radio 2 thrown in there too depending on what music is taking my fancy that day.
-
Probably not. If it were Katie alongside Vick I probably would've remained as the Katie/Jordan/Vick thrupple and their banter was the appeal of the show and I sort of largely put up with the music. Whereas couldn't stand Jamie Laing as Mollie's maternity cover so much like some other of the daytime shows I might keep a distance from it.
-
I see the Going Home tradition of the regular hosts being away just as much as they're actually on-air is set to continue then. Just hope with the 'refresh' of Going Home Katie finally gets her own version of the jingle. That was always a small peeve of mine with Going Home- it's not like she was only occasional cover and each time after the 'Vick & Jordan' jingle you'd then have them saying 'Katie's with me this week, X is off' when a simple jingle would've done the job
-
Though if they hold out too much longer there's a good chance Global will snap him up too. He seems to do a lot of cover work across Capital and Heart local stations. While I guess if it happened would be another positive result from the Christmas/New Year scheme but would also be yet another DJ that Radio 1 would be missing up on. While I guess there is the Manchester issue, do wonder if the situation might have slightly more warmly received if it were Katie put onto Going Home rather than Jamie Laing and you had James Cusack then taking Katie's weekend slot.

To copy what I posted in the other thread: 1) If Greg were to go shortly, Matt & Mollie would be the ready-made fit. Consistently passed over for daytime (and that's just Matt & Mollie - Matt has been biding his time for well over a decade) and one of the more popular pairings remaining. Though the obvious issue is Matt in particular feels very much near the end of his time at Radio 1 now (despite sounding as good as ever) so it's not exactly an option for the future. But they are two recognisable names and still popular with the Radio 1 audience and would stand out in the popular breakfast radio marketplace while Radio 1 decide what to do next 2) Katie Thistleton. Ideally you'd maybe want her with Vick but Vick seems to firmly not want to be on Breakfast. Radio 1 haven't had a female breakfast DJ for years and Katie is very popular with the audience. She's been 'supply teacher' for years and been the go-to cover so much on Going Home that she's no doubt familiar to most Radio 1 listeners. There is the London issue - she seems to be pretty happy based in Manchester - but Radio 1 already do daily shows from Manchester and what better way to show the BBC broadcasts from 'across the UK' then doing the Breakfast show outside London and they already do the TV show outside London and it's still popular. 3) Dean McCollough. He seems to be a bit of a 'golden child' at the minute and he's already covered Breakfast. Wouldn't shock me if he gets the gig next. That said is he high profile enough for such a big role and reaction to him seems mixed at best (he's arguably more popular on here than on socials) and there's already a feeling he's been promoted too far too soon and put on Breakfast and that's supercharged. Plus if Manchester is a reason to not choose Katie the same applies for Dean surely. 4)RMC. They have experiencing hosting Breakfast from Kiss so would do a capable job no doubt. But also much like Matt & Mollie not exactly ones for the future and would be a stopgap surely. 5) Sam & Danni - in a few years probably great choices for Breakfast. But they're barely started on Weekend Breakfast and probably need a little time to develop and are they high profile enough yet with the weekday audience? You'd be forgiven as a casual listener for not being aware of them. 6) Somebody else. Let's face it not many of us would've seen Jamie Laing getting a big role like Drive a few years ago - or even a few days ago - and certainly his previous Radio 1 appearances don't merit it. So anybody could be on the table now whether it's a hire from commercial radio or just a 'celeb' (see some of the Global & Bauer stations for example). While I don't want to put this energy out there, Scarlett Moffatt like Jamie did a Radio 1 podcast once upon a time so who's to say she won't follow the Jamie Laing path and get a massive role out of nowhere (goodness I hope I'm wrong though).

Another few weeks off air for Vick Hope then ? Joking aside, a great opportunity for Sam & Danni to have a wider audience than usual and a go in a big slot and no doubt they'll do a great job. And to clear I think Vick is great and you'd imagine the next few weeks are preparation for the relaunched show come March so not really 'a break' But with her honeymoon break and now another absence on-air, it does feel like she's been off-air for Going Home this year more than she's actually been on.
-
It's been great today to actually hear from Jordan on social media and tributes in full from quite a few of the other Radio 1 DJs who were close to Jordan like Katie and Vick. Ideally there'd be a proper on-air send off for Jordan but if not then this will do - it did feel awkward yesterday with the news being announced but outside of the Radio 1 post not much from other Radio 1 DJs and radio silence from Jordan when no doubt all of them wanted to post about it. Do wonder if it was a directive from those in charge at Radio 1 for DJs to not do proper posts on your own social media until it was OK'd overall by the station for them to do so.
-
Radio 1's treatment does have a feeling of the scene in Succession where Connor gives a funeral speech about Mo (Lester): 'Jordan North was a man. He worked on Radio 1 for a decade. Listeners enjoyed his shows on Radio 1. When a DJ leaves it is sad'.
-
Yep I don't think there was any beef between them. There was a clip on Instagram a week or two back of the two catching up outside of work and the sense you get is that Greg gets on fairly well with everybody.
-
Also while he obviously ended up on Drive in the end it does feel a bit like Radio 1 needed to be dragged into giving Jordan a big role. He was on cover for years before actually being given a show of his own and even when he got that it was Sunday-only whereas a 'celeb hire' with a handful of appearances in Maya Jama got Friday & Saturday. That continued for a few years despite Jordan being by far the stronger DJ. He then had to do a huge amount of 'supply teacher' cover to again start to get his foot in the door on daytime (while others have had a far easier route) yet come the pandemic he was initially only on every third weekend and if Maya & Alice Levine hadn't left it sounds like he might've had to leave Radio 1 in 2020. And it's only after his podcast with William Hanson really blew up and he increased his profile massively on IAC that he eventually ended up on a weekday role. You compare all that time and effort to some of the daytime DJs come March who rightly or wrongly seemed to be regarded as ending up on daytime in no time at all.

Since the obvious option of Jordan moving to Breakfast post-Greg is now out the window, it does throw the cat amongst the pigeons about who comes after Greg. You do wonder if Radio 1 will try and keep Greg around for a little longer while they figure it out. 1) If Greg were to go shortly, Matt & Mollie would be the ready-made fit. Consistently passed over for daytime and one of the more popular pairings remaining. Though the obvious issue is Matt in particular feels very much near the end of his time at Radio 1 now (despite sounding as good as ever) so it's not an option for the future. 2) Katie Thistleton. Ideally you'd maybe want her with Vick but Vick seems a firm no on Breakfast. Radio 1 haven't had a female breakfast DJ for years and Katie is very popular with the audience. She's been 'supply teacher' for years and been the go-to cover so much on Going Home that she's no doubt familiar to most Radio 1 listeners. Got to be honest I'll probably be heading over to Jordan, Chris & Sian at Capital if that's the case. I like Greg a lot but I've also heard him on Breakfast for 6 years whereas Jordan, Chris & Sian would be something fresh and includes two DJs I really loved at Radio 1 in Jordan & Chris. At times too I've been listening to Radio 1 at times despite some of the artists and music played and comparing the two side-by-side the Capital playlist feels slightly more to my taste and certainly has a lot less of the 'urban' stuff.
-
Yep if Radio 1 were expecting listeners to take it well, they've had a rude awakening today especially with how sudden it is and Jordan seemingly not getting to say goodbye to listeners. Also, the fact that popular presenters are once again getting passed over for a major role doesn't help things. Jamie's promotion feels like the Maya Jama situation in steroids. It's getting to the stage where Katie Thistleton and Matt Edmondson do feel like the Radio 1 bridesmaids - always overlooked for a weekday role and you wouldn't blame either for looking elsewhere.
-
Given how bad they usually are at updating the schedule, it's telling how quick they have been here to remove any mention of him near instantly. Add in the lack of a quote from Jordan on the press release and it sounds an acrimonious departure.
