  1. Bizarre how the wheels have fallen off Going Home always being a duo in recent months?

The show was basically always covered by someone to keep a duo for the first 18 months, but since about Easter there’s been plenty of solo days now?

  2. Always fascinating to take a look at the charts included with the BBC Sounds data.

Released at midnight was the Q4 2022 data which you can see here.

Radio 1's Murder Mystery seems to have done good business at attracting Under 35's with that and the 'Afterlife' podcast taking places in the top 4. Greg James is the most listened to Radio 1 show on demand via BBC Sounds, with Vick and Jordan also in the top 10.

BUT... the one that really caught my attention is the Scott Mills Daily Podcast still being in 4th place on the 'Top Podcasts % U35 Skew' - which is significant as this period is October to December, meaning there were zero new episodes but clearly lots of people still catching up....

It’s still early days for Scott’s move to replace Steve Wright. Looking at the R2 numbers for Steve's slot (2pm to 5pm) there’s a month of deps (Steve left at the end of Sept) and then two months of Scott in Q4 data (though doing two hours rather than three). There’s been no particular cratering to the slot, he’s very marginally down to 7,118k (vs 7,286 q-on-q and 7,443 y-on-y). But probably holding up better than the station as a whole, where R2’s reach figure is now 14,286k (vs 14,461 and year-on-year 14,865). Looking at Scott’s 2-hour time-slot, the results are similar.

Also, again it’s early, but Scott’s appearance on Radio 2 between 2pm and 4pm hasn’t really affected Radio 1 - where you would expect some side-switching to follow him. R1’s reach for that slot is now 2,659k vs last quarter’s 2,686k. The real test will come from looking at a year’s worth of quarters - but no instant crumbling so far.

Which gives us some fascinating insight. Basically Scott has sat around 2.6m on Radio 1 Afternoons and that figure has only dipped ever so slightly in the first quarter without him. Whereas, Radio 2 Afternoons sit around 7.3m and again, his arrival/Steve's departure has had little impact.

  4. I’m not sure if they would ever move the Breakfast show out of London. It was made clear when the BBC bosses outlined the plans for R1/2 to move a daytime show outside of London that it “excludes Breakfast”.

I also do think the cost cutting point is an interesting one. Arguably we’ve seen them pairing up presenters at a time BBC wages have come under more scrutiny, so I am not sure that argument holds much weight now.

  5. I do wonder if Vick has been put on Drivetime because she was promised “something more” when she was bought in for the Life Hacks slot. I could see the same sort of promise with RMC really.

But timings just meant that Drive came up first… as I think you could use the same talent in a much better way on daytimes: Greg, Vick, RMC, Jordan & Katie.

Vick would sound much better solo-ing the Live Lounge, with RMC taking on more of a Scott & Chris style (plus they could’ve stayed there a while as it’s a good non-peak slot for older DJs).

In terms of next Breakfast, Jordan has got to be a shoe in, presumably with Katie because of Vick’s very strong objections. But if so, I don’t know why they haven’t shuffled them together on Drive already.

It must have been decided that Sam and Danni are gonna be here as cover for the foreseeable future so have been given their own listing on the BBC website and therefore on sounds. Essentially as the new Jordan as the main cover if they are available, Emil is done less shows and he has a regular show on Absolute (iiirc, I know it's something Bauer) so is someone they can't depend on as much.

I'd be shocked if there's much more to it than just someone on the web team creating the 'Sam & Danni' page when they needed it. (I believe it first appeared when they covered the weekend slot vacated by Dean, not yet occupied by Katie... so they weren't technically covering for anyone)

Dean and Vicky are off next week so Katie is covering them. She was meant to be on with Jordan so he’s now hosting next week solo apart from Tuesday when he’s off so Jack Saunders is on Going Home. Then the week after Katie joins Jordan again

This is interesting... I was looking forward to 2 weeks of Jordan & Katie as they're a great pairing. But certainly not mad at either of them getting some solo time either. Clearly Matt Edmondson is not around that week, as he'd have surely been perfect for either the Breakfast cover or to do a week on afternoons (with Katie remaining on Drive).

  7. Radio 1 haven’t really had any “misses” when it comes to daytimes over the last decade or so.

When you think they bought Grimmy straight in to breakfast and he then did a stint on drive. Greg moved up to afternoons, drive and then breakfast.

RMC and Dean & Vicky feel like real risks in terms of, I can’t see them travelling around the daytime schedule. If D&V really don’t work out, it wouldn’t be a bad thing to admit it and try a new show there in a year or so.

With RMC, they’re just wasted on that slot. I did enjoy the banter and games on their evening slot, it’s just lacking so much right now. It feels overstaffed and there’s not really any point having them do such a music heavy, features limited show.

Scott & Chris always managed to get away a lot of music, but also squeeze in a lot of content.

Emil Franchi is in for Matt & Mollie on Friday 29th July.

Mollie is solo on Saturday 30th & Sunday 31st July.

That’s interesting, as July is his Early Breakfast month? Is that the first time someone’s covered a show (not EB) during their month?

  9. Glad I wasn’t the only one who was confused by Aled’s quote about lockdown. Maybe a mistake?

I don’t think this is such bad news for Radio 1 - or Greg on Breakfast - because all youth stations are down. If you look at Matt Deegan’s blog, he states it’s higher % of older listeners who are going. There is just not enough younger people coming in to replace them. This is kinda good news for the Radio 1 team as it means the content is on target. There’s just a wider issue that the target audience doesn’t listen to radio overall as much.

Adam Bowie’s blog states the % for which each show is down. We don’t know the numbers, so it’s hard to gauge too much. But it’s the first time we’ve had a breakdown of any sort:

    Greg is down 7.9%
    RM&C 12.4%
    Scott & Chris 4.5%
    Vick & Jordan 7.5%

The BBC Sounds data out today also shows Under 35’s listening and RM&C are the only daytime show not to make the Top 10, plus losing the highest %. Does not look great for them.

  10. Should Vick & Jordan take some holiday coordinated together?

Easier said than done, I know, but that’s another week with the drive show not quite being “normal”. They’ve not had a long run together in a few months now? (Including by this time next month!)

Once Greg has done this show, which I suspect will be within the two years (as Chris Moyles said in a Podcast a couple of years ago, nobody will ever beat his record of 8 and a half years, they'll be too old and untrendy long before then)  much like Moyles, he'll leave the station. However, I think he will stay at the company barring some huge offer coming in from Commercial Stations (could only see it being Global), can very much see his future at the BBC at either Radio 4 or 5 Live. I think it's very likely we see him on Test Match Special at some point, the perfect sort of guy for it in the future.

Not sure I agree with that comment from Moyles.

He did not want to adapt his style (he's still doing the same type of show on Radio X!) - whereas I see Greg as much more of a Scott style presenter. He adapts, changes to suit the 'current' sound of Radio 1 and more importantly keeping the listener as the star of the show means he could easily go on for 6+ years. (Whereas Grimmy had the celebrity culture that was getting a little bit boring towards the end of his time).
