How long is a temporary fix though? He’s been on it nearly a year now. I guess time will tell with his contract which I’m sure I’ve seen on here somewhere ends soon?

I’ve always assumed it was contractual, or just until they have some new talent ready to take over.

Can't remember where I heard it now.

Anyway, I think if they were going to keep Grimmy on Radio 1, they should have kept him on breakfast. I believe that he was only swapped with Greg specifically to see him there until the end of his contract and if he's still there this time next year I'll be very surprised. I think Matt and Mollie, or Jordan North, should get the drivetime show now.

None of this is very dynamic, they need something exciting to give drivetime a kick up the arse, Jordan is a solid music jock, Matt and Mollie are very commercial radio, not to mention off target in terms of style.  I think Greg’s doing pretty well, good stopgap for breakfast, Nick I would imagine is a very temp fix indeed on drive.

    I really like Kerrang! Radio.

I suppose you could essentially choose any station over Radio 1, just actual alternatives in terms of their core demographic the choices would be Capital or Kiss in the UK, with big 16-24 core audiences like Radio 1.  On a side note why is such a large proportion of Radio 1’s audience off target, under 24s are about 3.1 million last I checked for Radio 1, which is success, but why are there 6 million over 30s listening??

Any truth in the rumour that Mike Duce is taking over the drivetime show in September? I don't get why they swapped Grimmy and Greg when they already did that in 2004 between Chris Moyles and Sara Cox.

I haven’t heard this rumour anywhere other than on here, source?

Just saying I could see Chris leaving to join his new mate Peter Crouch for a new show/podcast on 5live

Also- interesting choice Charlie from Rickie Melvin and Charlie. She’ll be good as dance is her thing the other two like hip-hop more. I am suprised it’s not Arielle Free in but yeah should be good

Maybe a weekend show, and a podcast for sure.  That seems to be Stark’s future career path.  Arielle probably not quite as tight as Charlie for the format so in all senses Charlie should be perfect, it’s quite a commercial shift, reaches the biggest audience of any dance show, or something along those lines.

I cannot imagine why Scott is not dep anymore because he has always been, unless it's waiting an impending move to R2 so they had to get new deps for breakfast

Things change, and you can’t have the same dep forever.  That being said, Scott and Chris together are a much stronger youth radio breakfast proposition, well targeted, clever features, and on target talking points, and the perfect about of content, rather than Matt and Mollie crashing in with their cheesy features/talking points and lack of content.  Radio 2, you never know.

I would put the regular weekday presenters back to be honest - rather Greg any day than M&M and rather Clara than Maya although that would leave us in a scenario where Grimmy got the chart and Party Anthems unless they left 1-4 and 4-7 same as now and gave Grimmy and Chris Stark Fridays off

Also because of the weekend on Friday thing Adele looses half hour on an already "shorter" show than the other weekday presenters - I don't understand why Friday breakfast has to start at 6 because essentially it's the same slot as Greg so why can't it start at 0633 after Newsbeat like Greg does weird

Also sounds silly when on Thursday M&M cover with Gregs jingles and beds and all then Friday it's totally different should still be Scott covering for Greg IMO

See Dev and Alice are covering for Scott the week he is off - wonder if Stark will be with them that will be an interesting dynamic with three of them - I doubt Chris has more holiday as he only just had a week off where Scott was solo

There’s a logic in having 1-4 and 4-7 different on a Friday, 10-1 and breakfast changing is ratings suicide. There’s obviously a reason scott and Chris haven’t been first choice for deps this year, they still sound spot on for Radio 1, so it’s odd logic considering Matt and Mollie are hardly the exciting new talent.  I can’t imagine Stark with Dev and Alice, if that was the case you’d put just dev or just Alice with him, as has been done previously.  It would dilute the duo’s brand brand, so having a duo cover Scott means no stark.  The weekend/Friday logic is to have a unified schedule for Friday-Sunday, which for a multitude of evident and less evident reasons is not ideal, especially with Mornings, but that will be the 6am reason.  I think the less profile Adele has on the network is probably for the best, considering her style is very much for target for the target demo.

Charlie Hedges from the Rickie, Melvin and Charlie fame and who is also known for Club Charlie is covering Dance Anthems on the 20th July.

Sophie K is covering the Indie show on the 17th and 18th July as well next week.

Sophie K interesting, they seem to be alternating, because my thought was Abbie Mcarthy was a more mainstream, and carefully on target presenter to cover, but we’ll see.  Charlie covering dance anthems is good, should essentially be what Adele was doing, but more on target, and younger in terms of style.

It seems to me that they are using the weekend equivelent to cover weekday shows now so breakfast covers breakfast and all

Wonder who will be cover for Matt and Mollie? if they had same holiday used to be Yasser for Dev

Also anyone notice Maya has anthems now 10-11? from Friday its being trailed so wonder if Greatest hits is going to be permenent 10-11 weekdays and Maya is doing anthems

I get the idea with weekend afternoons covering weekday afternoons etc, but it makes no sense doing it blindly like that.

Scott is off from the 15th-18th July so Dev and Alice are covering for him.

Always enjoy hearing those two, they’ve really come into their own as a duo.  I’d prefer Jordan to cover 1-4 and then to be Grim’s cover on drive when you think about it, the personality duo with a lot of potential should probably get the drive cover, and the standard solo music presenter with some potential should cover afternoons.

I suppose there’s quite a few LGBT ?️‍? djs on radio 1 now like Grimmy and Adele Roberts as well, all on daytime! So that could be more comforting to Scott?

Maybe, although I do wonder if it’s more a case of everyone being more open about these things in 2019, compared to when Scott started in the late 90s, and I think he feels much more comfortable and himself on air these days.

Has anyone noticed recently how Scott Mills is more open on air about his sexuality? For years he used to say that he “doesn’t have much luck with the ladies.” But now now he sometimes mentions his boyfriend and I think it’s great how he doesn’t hold back like has has done over the years. Everyone knows Scott is gay and when he revealed it many years ago, it didn’t change a thing for him working at Radio 1.

    Good on him. ?

Hadn’t noticed it, but now you say it, he has started being more open about his life.  As you say, good on him ?.

There’s no way Scott is going back to drivetime.

I think Scott’s been given a new contract after turning down Heart Breakfast. Meaning he’ll be on afternoons for a good few years yet. I think Greg is on Breakfast for the long haul too - probably 6-8 years

There’s no way another breakfast host will last 6-8 years after Moyles.  It needs to refresh much quicker than that, Moyles staying so long left radio 1 in a tricky situation, not to mention, Greg’s breakfast era is really most likely a transitional show before the new big radio 1 DJs break through.

  14. During this past year, I’d been strongly of the opinion Scott and Chris seemed to be winding down their show, and with events like Innuendo Bingo and the Lolathon seeming a bit like a swan song, and the show’s content sounding a bit tired, as if they knew the show was coming to an end, not to mention Scott’s Radio 2 covers, it seemed enevitable.  However, during the past few weeks, from listening, they have massively stepped up, they have an intro and some proper custom imaging, some podcasts are over 40 minutes, and they’re back with a vengence, sounding fresher than ever.  They sound so fresh and on target, I honestly think that if there were plans for them to leave as suspected, they must have changed.  They can’t leave when they’re sounding this good.  Two theories - they’ve signed another deal for 1-4pm for a few more years, or - and this is very out there - I’m all but certain Grimmy on drive was a contractual complication, and he won’t see out the year, it’s the laziest show I’ve ever heard, it’s gone downhill massively.  So my second theory is, seeing as Radio 1 don’t have some huge young new talent that can take over Breakfast and drive, (hence Greg being a excellent guardian for the slot until the next generation of DJs for radio 1 breaks through in 2-3 years), what if they were to put Scott and Chris back onto drive for 2-3 years, until someone else is ready.  Then Greg and Scott will move on in a few years, and Radio 1 will have got some fresh new young DJs by then that are ready to take over the shows.  What do you think?  The only reason I think this is possible is because their afternoon show has had a huge refresh and they sound better than ever.  Can you see this happening?

Yeah it was rather odd, but then Scott has never been one to play on the fact he's been there that long, he doesn't like reminding people he has been

TBF most of his younger audience probably wouldn't know he'd been there that long anyway, or even remember him on drive

CM would have played on it big time on the contrary if he had made 20 years on R1 and 10 on breakfast on 2014, but he'd never be on daytime now, maybe if he'd taken Grimmys old slot he was offered he still wouldn't be there now and only one day at weekends and some R2 work

Scott is bang on target still and caters for his right audience, older studying students and uni people and people at home in the day and driving for work, which are generally late 20s early 30s upwards

He adapts to the chart and Dance Anthems well and he has proven countless times he can become more R2 style in an instant so much so we had him on in the car Sat and my Mrs asked me to put Mr Jam back on ! as she thought it was boring talking to people about marathons and all

What he has done on R2 in three hours Saturday is more speech than a whole week on 1-4 shows

I bet he did more voice in hour 1 than a whole weekday show 3hrs

I seriously think he is no longer primary breakfast cover now, and instead he's being given opportunity to cover on R2

I hope we see him get some prime time cover work for Radio 2 then, as they seem to have sidelined him from breakfast cover over Matt and Mollie, as you said.

  16. 3 hours ago, Lee E said:

I am hedging a bet with the new joint controller role coming in, that Scott makes a permanent move to R2 in the next year maybe bar the Chart on a Friday, and he replaces Steve Wright or Ken Bruce or Vine but as a music show not what Vine does now

I agree. I could see him doing drive or breakfast on radio 2 some point down the line

  17. 11 minutes ago, anothernerd said:

That would be werid, for years he’s been on 1 playing everything from girl bands and boy bands to rappers and a few pop stars in between. Then he’d be playing ABBA or someone from the 80s comeback single

Radio 2 also play current chart music, but yeah it’s be a massive transition as well, and I’m sure radio 2 could be Scott’s chance to eventually have a good run on breakfast or drive again.

  18. 3 hours ago, anothernerd said:

Moyles was very controversial to say the least so perhaps that’s why they try to lid him( alltough he came back for the Radio 1 Vintage. ?‍♂️

Intrestingly him and Scott are the same age. I do wonder how long Scott’s got left ?!!

I’m sure when his time on radio 1 wraps up he’ll have a massively successful career on radio 2, fingers crossed.

I love the new introductions which get played sometimes at 1 right after the news: "The one for fake tan" or "The one after *callers voice* neeewsbeat". I usually miss the first few minutes of the show so these might have been on for ages.

Reminds me of Grimmy's status updates from his nighttime show ("Status update: Nick Grimshaw *singing to the ABBA tune* is Grimmy-Grimmy-Grimmy, the man before midnight!") or when callers introduced Scott's show.

    They’re brilliant ??.

I think they suit that timeslot - but agree if they want to move into daytime they'll need to broaden their appeal.

I agree, they must have ambitions to move to daytime though, otherwise why would they have taken a late night show after doing the number 1 commercial breakfast show.

This is so very W1A. The directors at the BBC are once again looking very out-of-touch with their audiences.

It's the label "BBC Pop Music" that upsets me more than the proposal. Asian Network is hardly pop, I doubt the listeners of 6Music would call their music that, and Radio 1 is intended to be more about "new music".

It’s a massive sweeping generalisation isn’t it — from the way I look at it this could be terrible or good, it’s just an odd change, never would have predicted it.

  22. 2 minutes ago, vorti said:

I agree that popular stuff should be on the playlist, but R1 should at least try forming the trends instead of just following them, especially with the nighttime shows. It feels like to me they don't utilize 1xtra as they should: playing the same stuff on two stations at once is pointless, so are regular takeovers. R1 should have more experimental, interesting songs with chart hits (like that country-trap weirdness which skyrocketed in popularity last week, whatever I think of it, it's different, distinct, interesting) while 1xtra could stick to the most popular genres (including those same-beat-same-mumbling-lyrics tracks which still have their audience). And it needs regular cross promotion as well: "Wanna get more of the trend? Head over to 1xtra." (these existed at some point) / "Bored of the same style? R1 is for you."

As I take a look at the current playlists, this is not that far as it might feel like, especially since the 8th (daily takeover, wtf) is out of the picture.

    that's a really good point.

I thought I was alone in thinking how dreadful Clara and Maya are. So formulaic and have nothing original to say. Jordan North is great and I love Greg’s breakfast show. Obviously Scott and Chris are still the greatest!

I don't have a problem with the formulaic format, although it does make dull listening.  But the presentation and content from those two is dire compared to other shows, it's not just a lack of content, that could sound slick, it's how weak on the desk and not slick both of them are.
