  1. I'm not sure 1Xtra, the only diverse black programming across the BBC, will be closed. I'm all for it, actually, and think it's brilliant. The presenters are often better, kinder and more musically swotty than on R1.
  2. You're literally borderline Radio 2 now. If R1 and R2 overlapped, it wouldn't be justifiable moneyspending and so both stations would suffer. They shouldn't be competing against each other, more working alongside each other. I think they should lower their TA demographic if that's what BC is so keen to do with breakfast, you'd think station-wide they should be focused, really, on 13-20 year olds.
  3. Nothing to suggest that on his LinkedIn or Twitter. But I wouldn't rule it out. Perhaps they're expanding the team, someone could email to enquire I suppose!
  4. Hello! Hope you enjoy using the site and chatting to us all. You could say it's like chrismoyles.net but without all the self-importance. Notable users are Jono (founder, owner, and everything else), newsbeat (not active anymore but loads of great posts), TMD_24 (good opinions) and OohErr, one of my favourites primarily for his (her?) username. Still to this day, I think it's Greg James in disguise. Welcome to page 69 of this thread, too.
  5. Oooh, someone's doing well! What are you upto?
  6. Producing trails, sourcing and paying voice talent, "ensuring sound broadcast is of a high quality" . Seems an interesting job.
  7. Well, not only do you not actually know whether or not this is the case currently, you also don't know Pure Jingle pricing. Sometimes it can be cheaper to house a small team to cover the network than to outsource production.
  8. Let's put this in perspective of a coffee shop. If you suddenly saw a significant proportion of your customers not returning, but seeing little change in other coffee shops in the area - would you lay the blame on somewhat irrelevant factors (the internet, the weather, the "way people consume" coffee)? No. If you knew anything about business, you'd adapt your business because you'd notice that you had less customers. Ben Cooper, think it's time you did the same!
  9. Whoooah, sounding good! But again, I'll vent that the use of the naff Scottish voiceovers, alongside newer voices, alongside even older voices, is ugly. Really really needs some consistency. I miss Mike W & Holly M (that audio is almost 100% not Holly). Radio 1 sounded its best with them.
  10. Absolutely spot on - and besides, the remit is from 16-29, so you could argue, why should they be included? Does feel like they're doing everything to avoid the blame actually being with themselves rather than the listeners.
  11. Any chance you could post / share links to soundbites?
  12. I read this and the comments. Radio 1 really needs a rethink from the top down. For starters, I'm sorry, but look at Ben Cooper's age. They need to start by hiring a young, energetic controller. Then they need to make their station attractive and decide WHO is going to listen. Weekends sound like they're tailored to a 10 year old, weekday mornings sound like they're aimed at 13 year olds, Clara's show is aimed at nobody in particular and weekdays sound more like they're aimed at 25 year olds. Then, they need to figure out what "the kids" like. I don't think many of their TA are turning OFF R1 in favour of their iPad or "Minecraft" (WHOOOOOO?!) otherwise we'd also see ratings drop across the board for Capital, Capital XTRA, KISS and the BAUER Three network. But we're not. So the final step is to realise they're doing it somewhat wrong. They need to work on their branding and marketing.
  13. I like the TOTH "This... is Capital.. from Global", and the new Capital UK brand, but everything else is very much commercial-orientated and dumbed down. The beds are very pop, tinny, smash smash smash oomf - even so, they're usually the best bit of a link. I HAAAAAAATE CAPITAL
  14. Good grief. That's one awful website. The bed's pretty good but sounds very Capital compared to their old theatrical Teen Awards style.
  15. RE everything above in this thread, I think they're getting a bit messy and sloppy and don't really know what to do. There doesn't seem to be any formula or direction for the audio branding, I heard a really crap Justin Bieber power intro which was awful compared to the old one.
  16. Equally as confused. Think I associated a few tweets and a video of Scott on the podium as being him winning but he was doing a speech. Apologies :/
  17. So Scott won! Equally as surprised that Nick was up for his trainwreck of a show. It really has lost any sense of direction, momentum and occasion - just blasting out the playlist with some shitty entertainment bulletin for filler and a few comments on what's trending at the moment. Back when Matt & Ian were on R1 Breakfast production, the show did "extra" things (think - sending Ian out to ask if Beyonce was staying at a hotel in London, think sending Ian out in a pizza hat, think touring colleges and schools, think outside broadcasts, think features...) but everything now just feels very "done". It's almost like Nick is in autopilot now. All links seem to follow this format - "Ten minutes past seven on Monday the 21st September on BBC Radio 1. Still to come, (guest) will be live on the show after eight o clock this morning" AND he's stopped bothering talking up to the vocals, or playing tracks out after a punchline. It's really sloppy. Started the show this morning with some Christmas music or something, so much for the show being the most important on the station. I daresay the end is nigh.
  18. Thoughts. And lots of them. 1Xtra is a black youth station. It's only on DAB (not FM, like Radio 1) and has a considerably smaller budget than Radio 1. It fits the remit of the BBC core values and helps them cater to an audience woefully underpresented in the media industry. But Charlie Sloth makes the station... well... shite. After appointing former Spotify guy as Head Of Music, I feared that this guy would influence BBB and the others into something such as this. It's worrying, and it's not what radio should be. Finally, I can't stress this enough, the RAJARs of stations such as Capital and KISS were largely unchanged. That means, no matter how much Ben Cooper wants you to believe it, young people are still listening to radio! The issue lies with where that lost audience actually is. Have they decided to listen to Capital? Millions of people haven't all collectively gone "actually radio is rubbish, let's stop listening" in the last month. This is an issue with poor scheduling, poor execution and a lack of fresh content. And less BBC-wide advertising.
  19. Why is everyone so obsessed with changing the schedule to be practically polar opposite? And, sorry @Jacob_, but you can't call yourself a fan of radio if Cel Spellman is the kind of person you'd give more airtime to....
  20. They usually make changes in September to the schedule and other things, but I did a little research and it looks to me like they make announcements around June time, is that correct?
  21. I personally miss all the creative advertising Radio 1 used to have > Their most recent advert, which was essentially just a woman riding a motorbike around in a circle, was pretty poor by the standards they'd set
  22. I've just been flicking through the BBC Podcasts website. Nick Grimshaw's podcast is better than the show itself, he sounds far more relaxed and is entertaining. Greg James' is always good. Consistently so. Him and Chris Smith are brilliant, and you'll find that they're featured together a lot. But the Twitter for his podcast is very poor indeed. It also starts with that really really catchy "BBC... Radio 1... BBC Radio 1 free downloads. Download them all for free at the Radio 1 website" jingle. Again, I think his podcast is somewhat better than his show. The recent one is highly amusing >> http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p045vf22#play Favourite quote: Greg - the ones.. kids and grownups love it so Chris - what, Werther's Originals?
  23. UPDATE - it's today! listen at fundfox.co.uk from 7pm!
  24. I don't think the celebrations will be as interesting to the general public, especially after the unfortunate past of Radio 1 which is widely referred to still.
