Really happy that Jordan has got his well deserved permanent slot but can't figure out why he doesn't have the mid morning on both days. Correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't Maya literally covered one show over Christmas, compared to Jordan who literally covered everyday over Christmas (including 2 6 hour shows!) She may deserve to join the cover lineup but not the main lineup yet!
Might start listening to weekend breakfast again now Alice is on it, but alas I've already moved my weekend breakfast listening to Moyles on a Saturday and Jason Manford on absolute on a Sunday.

I know this sounds like a mad question considering that Radio 1 is a radio station that prides itself on new music, but does anyone else think that the station is playing too much music?
Since the start of the year, we have seen a daily Nixtape between 9:30am-10:05am/10:10am, Throwback Thursday between 8:30am-9am - thus removing a total of 1 hour of content time on Thursdays, plus the dropping of the 'Going Home Song' on Greg's show in favour of an extra one or two tracks.
This comes on top of the withdrawal of Innuendo Bingo and Real or No Real on Scott's show (although I think Bingo needed to be dropped for a bit - RoNR has clearly been dropped to allow for more music), as well as doing away with the 5pm news update in November.
It would be interesting to hear other people's thoughts/views on this!

Simple answer - yes. Not sure if its to do with their music quota but I think it all went downhill a few years ago when they starting cutting more tracks down and fitting more in, which has now stripped the djs from any personality, which is a shame. I’d say 2012/2013 was when R1 got the amount of music they played just right.

Hi should have introduced myself. I am Lee, from Sussex. Radio enthusiast, mage geek, and very keen listener to R1 daytimes, fan of Scott's show and admire his career, as well as other R1 presenters. Was early 20's in the "go to work with Moyles and come home with Mills" era.
Love chatting to you guys and finding out loads of stuff from the knowledge here, great site, am also on the Moyles version.

Realistically, all I think will happen this year is one of Adele, Dev, Matt or Alice will leave/get kicked out and Jordan will take their show.
I would like Greg to replace Grimmy on breakfast but I just can’t see that happening this year!

I mentioned this in another thread, but thought I'd start one specifically for the subject.
I feel like Grimmy's gotta go this year, hasn't he? Surely he can't go on for another year. I'm fairly confident Tina Daheley will go though - I rarely listen to the Radio 1 Breakfast show these days, but almost every tine I do, she isn't there.
Jordan North has now been covering shows since 2014 - I'm fairly sure he'll get a permanent show this year. Maybe Alice Levine will leave - she's good but she's never seemed particularly invested in radio, what with all the time off AND not doing any work over Christmas (or even this weekend). Then again I think she'd be a good addition to daytimes, if she could ever commit to it, potentially as a replacement for Greg if he gets breakfast.
Dev will have been on weekends for four years in April - I really love him, so I hope they don't let him go but he certainly won't make it to daytime now. And in January Matt will have been on for FIVE years (which is a long time in radio). I can't decide whether I think he'll get a call up when Scott eventually leaves - he might be a bit old, and his show at the moment certainly isn't target. That said, I don't think Mills will leave in 2018. Fingers crossed.
Adele's only been on early breakfast for two years and she's a solid if not cutting edge jock, but she probably doesn't have a future on daytimes purely due to her age. I could potentially see her being sent to weekends if any of the above leave and Jordan getting her slot. Alternatively, he might get one of their weekend slots, or if he's really lucky (unlikely), promoted straight to daytime.
I doubt any of these will come true, but you never know. There hasn't been a daytime schedule shakeup since 2015 - 2018 could either bring the most radical shakeup there's been in years, or more of the same.

Don't know why it's still suggested Mills will eventually move to weekends and do some weekday cover. I would put a large amount of money on that not happening.  He'll go out at the top on weekdays 1-4. Why would one of Radio 1's most legendary presenters who's been on weekdays for nearly 15 years agree to be demoted to weekends and the subs bench. Never gonna happen in my opinion.

So what are we all making of it so far?
There's a load of voices we haven't been introduced to, the music is very much more 1Xtra than Radio 1 (it's Charlie Sloth, I don't know what I was expecting - Taylor Swift?).
So far it seems a bit naff and contrived.
EDIT 21:42: a lot naff and contrived. And all the music sounds the same.

Every weekend in September Radio 1 are playing some of the best songs of the last 50 years too during the 10am-1pm slot.
Grimmy played some old songs this morning, complete with old jingles blended in with normal imaging. Sounded really good.
I also never thought we'd hear power intros of Wham! and Stevie Wonder...! Heard some during Adele's show.

    Interesting article here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-40431793
But I think Ben Cooper is being a bit disingenuous. It's not that there isn't a pool of talent available - it's that he isn't fully tapping into it. There are tons of people on commercial radio who'd do a decent job on Radio 1, but Ben Cooper never seems to commit. Look at the way Jordan North has been deppping for the best part of 2 1/2 years without a full time show. Pete Allison as well was a missed opportunity. I also dislike the way he talks about casually plucking people off TV as an easy way of recruiting.

DAB pop up "Radio 1 Vintage" station for three days from 30th September with one hour extracts from archive shows. Tony Blackburn and Nick Grimshaw to launch it with a joint show and... MOYLES IS BACK!*
*although I'm not sure how big his role will be, the article suggests it'll just be a five minute introduction to his retro show segments.
    Very excited about this.

Funny that Chris Evans is absent as well given he's still at the Beeb, completely rehabilitated. And Steve Wright. Then again, if you want to hear a retro edition of Steve Wright in the Afternoon, all you need to do is listen to yesterday's episode - you won't be able to tell the difference.

I agree with this to a point - I do think, on average, the quality of presenters and features has declined over recent years. Scott has stayed pretty good, best thing on Radio 1 by a country mile, but what he's doing now isn't quite as good as what he was doing ten years ago. But hey - if he was still doing the same thing he was doing ten years ago, he wouldn't be on air anymore. I also think Greg James peaked in 2014-15 and is audibly putting less effort into the show than he used to (I blame Ian for this, I think Pippa was fantastic and she's totally wasted on X), but do I feel like my personal connection with them has been eroded - not really.
I also think weekends are the best they've been in years - back in 2011/12, it was the pretty meh line up of Edith, Vernon/Sara (I liked Sara), Huw and Reggie, and then Gemma Cairney, Vernon/Sara, Huw and Danny Howard/Jameela. I remember vividly Edith doing a feature when she would just try and say as names as possible over the Pick of the Pops music and talking about films ad nauseam. Yawn. Vernon had the bloody maths question, Huw was not suited to daytime, and we all know my thoughts on Gemma. Weekends were DIRE. Nowadays - Dev doing original (if bizzare, but very entertaining) features, Matt Edmondson with his games and viral interviews, Alice Levine who's a laugh, Danny Howard who isn't my cup of tea but I'm sure does a good show, the only weak link is Cel Spellman. Weekends have never sounded this good.
Oh, and Radio 2 - I listened to Steve Wright in the Afternoon yesterday, but I got confused for a second, I thought it was the audio version of the newspaper. Genuinely, all I heard yesterday was Steve playing his jingles, reading out the email address and reading stories and "factoids" out of the papers. Give me Scott and Greg anyday.

I doubt there'll be any changes, at the end of the day it's still Ben Cooper calling the shots, and he seems pretty happy running the station into the ground for the time being. On a side note, can you imagine lovely Aled firing anyone?

Actually, I think Diane Abbott would be great on the chart - "and now a new entry at number 72, which means it's the biggest selling single in the UK this week, it's Liar Liar. I'll play you the number 23 after that, and we'll run down the top 10-36".
The Official Chart with Diane Abbott - every Goosday from 4pm-76:30.

I highly doubt Moyles would be involved. For a start, he does the breakfast show on another station (if he's still on by then) so I doubt the BBC would want to promote that, even if it might help get rid of their older listeners.
Plus, Chris has mentioned how there's a bit of bad blood between him and Radio 1 - he says the only person from Radio 1 who stayed in touch with him (apart from Dom, Pippa and Aled I guess) was Westwood, who himself was binned off not long after. Plus there's the constant Scott Mills jibes (and Chris said on air a few times that he's weird) and it basically looks like he alienated a lot of people at Radio 1 - which was fine when he was doing the most successful breakfast show they've ever had, but less so now. There's also the way Radio 1 like to pretend that he never happened - I don't expect them to mention him every day, or even very often at all, but even straight after he left it was like he'd ceased to exist, and there are sometimes jokes at his expense without his name being mentioned. I think Greg genuinely admires him, but the rest seem to think he's an arse. So that's why I think a Moyles appearance at Radio 1's 50th is unlikely.
Some people have suggested that because they're still futilely trying to lower the average age of the listeners, they won't acknowledge the birthday at all, or if they do, they'll do it in a very low key way.
