  1. I hope so. Got a new job which includes driving about a lot and I've really been enjoying Scott's show whilst on the move. Most I've listened to him again since around 2007/8. I don't mind Ken Bruce, pop master is pretty good. And to do the stint he's done is admirable. But there have been times where I have drifted away from his show and over to other stations sometimes. I know he's off to poorest hits. I'd rather drink paint than listen to that, and their anti under 40's audience.
  2. All Scott's fault and this new 90's music for kids... https://facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid02Axb151AeBtNh2DAojUuawmgk9idgFWmebE9TXRzPMzpXVU1cL28NxGQUeHtbrSJol&id=100064520506933
  3. A random one, but as dance music has a back catelogue stretching to the late 80s and early 90s. It's a wonder Radio 2 don't give Dave Pearce a permanent show by now. I know he's done new years eve for them once or twice over the past few years. Kisstory have scooped up one or two of his old colleagues, notibly Judge Jules recently for the legends slot on Saturdays. With something like that it would take the shackles off Radio 1 for them to play tracks no older than 2017/18 on Dance Anthems. Don't get me wrong I think dance music was at its best in the 90s and 00s, but the more time passes it feels like tunes by Modjo, Daft Punk, early Tiesto etc are more of a Radio 2 thing now.
  4. It's difficult in some instances for Radio 2 to play 90s and 00s because the tracks may be too harsh for their style of sound. That is until the older guard like Ken Bruce and Vine retire. You are OK with stuff like Sophie Ellis Bextor and light dance like Supermen Lovers Starlight etc. Or easier rock like Muse or Evanescence. But still something like Foo Fighters All My Life, or Linkin Park, or Darude Sandstorm still sound more suited to Radio 1. I mean would something like the Prodigy Breathe sound out of place on Radio 1? Not really, stick some recent Sub Focus next to it and it's not all that different.
  5. The fact that people are turning away from Radio 1 because of the stuff AJ Tracey puts out (although Ladbroke Grove was OK imo, only because it sounded like an old UK Garage track). And mostly the same are turning away from Radio 2 because of Cliffs new record that only their Grandparents would listen to. Emphasises again Radio 2 can't cover such a vast age range musically. There needs to be a seperate service for 30 to 50ish somehow, just like I said.
  6. If it were the commercial radio of long ago it wouldn't be such a bad thing. Adverts always get on nerves especially if you are used to Radio 1/2/Five Live. But around my way in the Midlands we were in pretty good company circa 20 years ago. Beacon, BRMB, Galaxy, Kerrang. Dare I say it some good pirates (whilst they lasted) for dance if that was your thing.
  7. If they haven't changed their emergency tape since 2004 we may get a few blasts of Outkast Hey Ya followed by The Sugababes Hole In The Head... Running gag from the old days that.
  8. Your not the only one to say that about Radio 2 and on the whole I agree. It does feel that it's aimed towards that type of audience a lot. Not saying they should be left out. But let's be honest a shop floor or factory with circa 15 blokes are going to choose greatest hits or absolute. I don't mind Sara Cox too much these days, I can listen to the show. But then that's probably because I can relate due to her being on Radio 1, back in the days when I used to listen to Radio 1.
  9. Problem I have with Radio 1 is I just can't get with all the Stormzy/Dave stuff they go barmy on. Never could when Scott was there in his last days. I'm not a big Hip Hop nor R&B fan but back in the day I could get with 50 Cent, Ja Rule, Eminem, Kanye etc. Actually didn't mind the odd one, maybe the Americans did it better. But it just didn't feel a total jolt in direction with Modjo Lady next to it, or The Foo Fighters. Or Girls Aloud. The modern dance stuff I don't mind. I actually think dance music is in the best place it's been since the mid 2000's. Fred Again, Hannah Wants, LP Giobbi etc are churning out some quality stuff now. Radio 1 as far as modern dance are doing a top job. Radio 2 is the thing, I'm too old for Radio 1. People have it in their head that Radio 2 are still playing Dr Hook and Duran Duran (as new music). And the likes of Blur and Oasis are for the kids. It's a stigma that they are trying to shift but can't. Not only that but probably within their licence agreement they have to supply a certain amount of speech content. Hence Jeremy Vine. I've said before, as people are living longer and older. There needs to be a Radio 2.5 in a way. Pre 1990 to 2.5, and 90 upwards to 35 plus. And Radio 1 just, doing what it does nowdays.
  10. There wasn't a "year" for me really. The first I heard him was around 2001 on early breakfast. It was in the 6 weeks holidays and I remember sometimes my dad for his job at the time would have to travel a fair bit to drop equipment off, from the Midlands up to Newcastle was the one day. I sometimes used to tag along. So we were up dead early to set off. I remember him playing a tune and then using a state of the art (of the time) loop machine to loop intros as beds to talk over before the vocal. I thought that was so sharp and sounded great. Nowdays that's easy but in 2001 it was all new. Autumn 2004 into 2005 was when I properly started to see how good he really was. By then he'd teamed up with Chappers and made the drive show his own. I was looking for an excuse to keep listening to Radio 1 after Mark and Lard went, and Scott provided it.
  11. Aside from Scott, Chappers and Laura. Picking out the music is one of the best things about going through these. Some tracks I've totally forgotten about, other I want to such as Rudebox by Robbie Williams... Although hearing Scott play El Chombo 'Chacarron' for the first time in October 2006. Was just as brilliant as the first time I heard it.
  12. Well before mixcloud went all lame and limited uploads, unless you pay. I finally managed to get this done. For those who may not know, years ago I used to record Scott's drivetime shows and clip the best bits out of them for this website. This was before BBC Sounds and iplayer days, Radio 1 did have listen again, but the playback quality was never the best like today. So I chose to record direct to my PC at the time, via an FM and later DAB tuner. Thing is here, is that I've kept all these shows for the past 15 years plus on an old hard drive. And they are now all uploaded and in this mixcloud playlist below, over 450 of them. This was the era of Chappers and Laura, Chris Stark was still at school around this point so don't expect to hear him. But I did grab the last few weeks of Scott and Chris from this year which are also included somewhere on here. Plus a random 2015 show I saved for reasons unknown. There's some breakfast shows in here too with Scott covering Chris Moyles. But exactly which ones I don't know, I had to rush against the clock. Maybe someday I'll mark those up properly. Anyway, stick these on in the car or through your heaphones. And party like it's 2006! https://www.mixcloud.com/midlandanorak/playlists/scott-mills/
  13. It's a shame with mixcloud but I do sorta get it, they have to find the money to freely put all these old radio shows on playing copyrighted music I guess.
  14. Spot on imo. You mellow out as you get older, so his early 2000's rants are far less. But it's also a combination of that and saying slightly the wrong thing, will offend your friends' neighbours' butlers' tortoise. Not saying going flat out to offend someone of course, but even a tounge n cheek thing to make someone laugh 15 years ago wouldn't pass now. I'm amazed Scott and Chris were able to get away with what they did for so long tbh.
  15. As suggested Chrismoyles.net has a lot of clips of various funny things he's done. But if you want to listen to how he generally was on a full show, I've put a mixcloud playlist together of a few of his shows on there. There's a few breakfast shows, and a fair few of the old afternoon shows. Personally thought he was at his best on afternoons but breakfast was good too. Afternoon show ran from 1998 to 2003. Breakfast from 2004 to 2012. For something different from him, the afternoon of 9/11 is on here too. Worth a listen as its one of the very few occasions his true professional broadcaster head was put on and he was serious. https://www.mixcloud.com/midlandanorak/playlists/chris-moyles/
  16. Only pulling up Danny Howard and Pete Tong the following week to listen back to, is pretty much all I use Radio 1 for. Don't listen in the day at all now really.
  17. The moaning from the old guard who believe the world stopped turning in 1982 would be immense. This kid from Radio 1 taking over from Ken would be unthinkable. I think Scott will end up on drive or breakfast at some point for Radio 2.
  18. I have lots more to upload of Scott's shows. Eventually I'll continue on through 2006 where I left off. It's been time recently for me but I want to get it done.
  19. Ah Clive Warren, a name I haven't heard for a while. Just caught wind of Sara Cox playing the Flaming Lips & The Chemical Brothers 'Golden Path' whilst skimming through that. Been a long time since I heard that.
  20. Shame that won't play. All you do to post a mixcloud show on here once it's uploaded, is just post the normal url from the address bar for it on here. The forum will automatically put on the mixcloud player for it. Thats a good shout though. I drifted away from Radio 1 around that point so missed getting that. I remember the fuss about him moving to "a less desirable" time slot at the time. Thinking it was the start of Radio 1 pushing him out. He did another 10 years though, so not bad.
  21. I heard him say that too. Haven't heard the show since I recorded it but listening back that perked my ears up. "I have some stories about Tim too..." You never know.
  22. Last innuendo bingo, and Chopper coming back. That was really nice to hear.
  23. With Scott leaving recently I thought I'd put something a little interesting up for people to hear back. There could be many out there I've missed so feel free to add any, especially post 2012ish stuff which I'm not too up on really. Below are some poigniant final ever Radio 1 shows, with a little backstory to go along. Scott Mills 2022-08-25 Only one place to start really. After 24 years at Radio 1 for Scott Mills, and 10 for Chris Stark. The curtain closed on the show in 2022 in emotional style. We all know the story here for that. Chappers 2009-12-24 The younger audience may or may not know. But before Chris Stark, Scott had another co presenter in Mark 'Chappers' Chapman. He worked on Scott's 4-7pm drivetime show from 2004 to 2009. As a co presenter and also sports reporter on Newsbeat. Chappers also worked with Sara Cox on the Breakfast show, and Dave Vitty (Comedy Dave) for 'Chappers and Dave' on Radio 1 in the 2000's. You can now find him doing Match of the day on the telebox. Chris Moyles 2012-09-14 Chris Moyles started life at Radio 1 the same way Scott did. On early breakfast back in 1997. Following a successful afternoon show (1998 to 2003), Radio 1 gave Chris Moyles breakfast to kick off 2004. A move that reaped the benefits following falling ratings. Moyles would go on to host breakfast until 2012. He returned to radio in 2015 with Radio X, fronting the breakfast show there. He split opinion, but for us of a certain generation he defined an era. And on his day could be brilliant and incredibly funny. Chris Moyles (Final Afternoon Show) 2003-12-03 Not the end of Chris Moyles on Radio 1, but a sort of end of an era for people of a certain age. Chris was handed the afternoon show in 1998 following a good stint on early breakfast. The show originally ran from 4-5.45pm, but was given an extra hour in 2001 following Simon Mayo leaving and a reshuffle of the schedule. Through my school years I grew up with hearing Mark & Lard on afternoons followed by Chris Moyles, they coincided perfectly for me. In 2004 Chris moved to breakfast, Mark & Lard left Radio 1, and I left school. Mark & Lard 2004-03-26 One of the ones I heard on the day, and haven't been able to listen to since. You either got these two or you didn't, I got them and they were brilliant. Free thinking, said what they thought, unique, and just two northern tosspots (self described) who couldn't believe they were given a Radio 1 show. They joined Radio 1 in the early 90's hosting the Graveyard shift which really was a bundle of comedy, poetry and up and coming new indie music. They were given the breakfast show after Chris Evans left, the less said about that the better. The afternoon show that ran from 1997 to 2004, was a success. Featuted quality items such as 'Lard's Classic Cuts', 'Missing Words', 'Beat The Clock'. And 'It's A Mystery', where Mark & Lard introduced their 'Whoooooooo?' catchphrase (later continued by Scott). Most of these were usually Lard inspired, on the phone in another studio putting on a daft voice! The last show they got to ditch the Radio 1 playlist (no more pesky Ja Rule crap to put up with!). Travis joined them on the show, there was a special song from Coldplay, a goodbye song from all the Radio 1 DJ's, a phone message from David Bowie plus numerous other skits and bits. The show ended with half a catchphrase 'Stop!', a Radio 1 sweeper, and silence, followed by the emergency backup tape. And then Sara Cox afterwards filling people in on what they just heard. There was a running gag where sometimes control from Manchester where they broadcast from, back to London went wrong. And sometimes they'd just see how long they could stay silent for to test the waters. That time it was on purpose. I remember staring at the radio when they went off kind of half expecting them to come back on, they never did. Simon Mayo 2001-02-15 Simon Mayo seems to be the DJ who was the link between the Radio 1 of old (cheesy 80's jingles and roadshow shorts era), and the Radio 1 of the new millenium. He survived the Bannister axe in the early 90's, down to the fact that he was bloody good tbh. A talented presenter who took on various shifts across the station including the breakfast show at a point. I only heard bits of Simon Mayo in his Radio 1 days, as I only started properly listening to the station around 1999 way. I began to appreciate how good he was in his Radio 2 days when he hosted drivetime there. Sadly the Radio 2 management butchered things up by pairing him with Jo Whiley which never worked. Simon left Radio 2 and is now on Greatest Hits. His final Radio 1 show was a final show you'd expect. A mix of memories, music, and a final handover with Jo Whiley. Nemone 2005-09-xx Even though I recorded this I'm not fully sure of the exact date aside that it was September 2005. Nemone joined Radio 1 in 2000, covering Jo Whiley when she was off and having her own weekend show. In 2004 she replaced Scott Mills on early breakfast, as he was moved to drivetime to replace Sara Cox. She later went on to join 6 Music and left there in 2021. The final show was favourite picks, songs, memories. And another time Spice Girls 'Goodbye' was used, Scott also played it for Chappers final show (above). Dave Pearce (Dance Anthems) 2008-09-26 Dave had his radio roots laid back in the 1980's but joined Radio 1 in 1995. He as many others, started on early breakfast taking over from Bruno Brookes. He also had late drive (6-8pm) for a spell from 1998 until 2004, which also included the legendary 'mix at 6'. Dave was also the first ever voice on Radio 1 as the year 2000 rolled around, hosting a special millenium essential mix alongside Judge Jules from Glasgow. Dance Anthems is where Dave Pearce really made his mark on Radio 1, he was the original innovator. The show started in 1997 and was broadcast on Sunday nights from 7pm-9pm. Later moved in 2007 for it's final year to Friday nights 11pm-1am. Dave and other DJ's such as Pete Tong and Judge Jules were really at the forefront of the trance music boom, that engulfed dance music over the late 90's and early millenium. Dance anthems was a hard show to convince Radio 1 bosses to take on, because they thought that people wouldn't want Dance Music on a Sunday at that time. But it became an institution, with shows also coming live from the likes of Ibiza and Magaluf. Dave's final show included lots of classic dance anthems, a small montage of his Radio 1 years, and the final track being William Orbit - Adagio For Strings. Dave took Dance Anthems to 6 Music where it felt an irregular fit on a mostly indie station, so was short lived. He still plays out doing his trance anthems gigs, and can be heard on Radio 2 from time to time in recent years. Usually hosting New Years Eve/Day shows. A new look Dance Anthems returned to Radio 1 in 2012 with Danny Howard on Saturdays. So there you have it, some final Radio 1 shows of interest. Feel free to add more below if you know of any.
  24. I love listening to old shows. There's a fair few on mixcloud now. I spent my lockdown walks 2 years ago listening to old Moyles afternoon shows, Scott, MnL. Great to hear them talking about stuff of the time and playing songs that were new, but now are 20 years old.
  25. I've uploaded the last few weeks of Scotts Radio 1 show to my mixcloud which I have various bits of old Radio 1 on from the 2000's, including Scotts final show. As they won't be on BBC Sounds forever. Also as I recorded lots of shows from 2005 to 2007, the Chappers and Laura era. I'm also working my way through those and getting them online when I find the time. A long way to go but I've gotten to around summer 2006, hopefully I can pick up on those soon. Everything is in this playlist, keep tabs on it for more old shows in the future. https://www.mixcloud.com/midlandanorak/playlists/scott-mills/
