  1. Matt Edmondson really is an underrated gem of a broadcaster. Outstanding radio all week, but particularly a few minutes ago.

  3. Hello everyone Aled here, Head of Programmes at Radio 1. Thank you for all your passion for Scott, Chris and Radio 1 - the station’s success relies on fans like yourselves caring about radio and what we do and all of us at Radio 1 really appreciate it. Don't worry - I’m not planning on hanging around and cramping your style, I’m trying to get hold of Jono. I’ve used the ‘Contact us’ section but I’ve heard nothing yet, if someone on the board has his contact please ask him to email me. (It’s nothing bad!) Keep up the amazing work everyone, be as critical as you like, I’m sure Scott appreciates it. Thanks, Aled.

  4. Ah you cynics. If it was that orchestrated they'd not have stood at a finish line waiting for her last night only for her to arrive just as Newsbeat started.

  8. Think we are all gutted, but it's genuinely really exciting for him and a big scoop for Capital. I couldn't quite get into Roman's show, but I feel I'd be more tempted to listen to Jordan with Chris and Sian. Will have split loyalty with Greg!

Jordan North to leave Radio 1

Another aside - I think Sam and Danni are outstanding with a wide appeal demographically. Hope this gives them a chance for a big promotion.

  12. Actual LOL at Jordan and Scott just now: Jordan: oh god, they're gonna send me back to local radio - oh wait, all the jobs have gone. Scott: it's all coming from London now babes, Rock FM's not on anymore.

  13. God he has an irritating voice. Sounds so forced and unnatural. Reminds me of when Chris Moyles does his wacky deejay impression.

  14. This has been annoying me- one of the great things about RONR is the banter between Scott, Chris and the DJ and the flow of the game. It has the potential to be one of the funniest things on Radio 1 when they're on top form and the facts are funny. Stopping after 1 fact to play a song we've heard countless times is pointless and ruins the flow. It's happened a few times where they've only done 2 facts. Such a shame, especially now that they have such a good line-up with Greg on Mondays, Charlie Sloth on Tuesdays, Alice on Thursdays and Cel on Friday. They all have the potential to be hilarious and have been great the last few weeks, just drop the song in the middle and go back to 4 facts!

  15. Think that Radio 1 really needed this week, charity aside, to come together again. I don’t think they ever diverged, but the Jordan news I think was challenging and as a listener this week has secured that perception of the family again.

  16. It's been a great week of radio. Radio 1 at its best - promoting a great cause and all the DJs on air together and shows how much they all get along. This week has highlighted too just how great the likes of Greg, Matt and Katie are as broadcasters - they have been superb covering the challenge and in their genuine love and support for Mollie (who has been doing so well and is giving it her all). Lovely too to see Matt & Mollie get their flowers so much in the past month - both thoroughly deserve it and their kindness and good spirit has really shone through these last few days even more than usual. Matt's link yesterday about how Mollie has been a support to him and him to her at around 4.45pm yesterday was just so wonderful and heartfelt and what Radio is all about.

  17. The more I think about this, the less I understand it. Vick and Katie would be a good Going Home show without Jamie. What did happen in the aftermath of Jordan leaving. Did Katie initially turn it down and they persuaded her to change her mind? Did they see the reaction to Jamie and see that they needed Katie to balance out the loss of Jordan? Some odd chain of events has happened

    Greg's new contract

I wonder if this was always on the cards and is why Jordan has jumped - 2-3 more years of Greg and he’d be in Scott Mills territory of being passed over for Breakfast in favour of a younger DJ.

  21. I know it's a different kettle of fishh because Roman isn't moving to a rival station, but the contrast between Roman announcing he is leaving and the outpouring of love, and the BBC cancelling Jordan I find really jarring.

  22. This is the first time since I started listening to Radio 1 (2016) that I’ve been genuinely floored by an announcement. There have been a lot of changes and I’ve raised by eyebrows a few times but everything had some element of logic to it even if I wouldn’t have made the exact same choice. With regards to Jordan I would have bet a lot of money on him being a shoe in for R1 Breakfast next, the succession plan seemed very clear - Greg could go this year or next if he wanted to, after a good run, and you have a ready made Breakfast star in Jordan and the likes of Katie/Sam and Danni/Dean all capable of stepping in on Going Home at that stage. Jordan at Breakfast and Vick and Katie on Going Home wouldn’t feel like a downgrade from now! Now Radio 1 seems in a real pickle in terms of succession planning for Breakfast. I can only assume Jordan was given an offer he couldn’t refuse - if it’s him and Chris Stark for Capital Breakfast it’s a coup for Global, a truly national sounding breakfast offering, and something Radio 1 must have been unwilling to give him right now, more power to him! As for Jamie Lang - I won’t be harsh because these are real people and you never know how it pans out, but it’s completely inexplicable to me. From a show that deliberately pitched itself (they did an interview about this a year ago) as a show aimed at young people outside London to someone from Made in Chelsea, I just don’t know what they’re doing and I have to wonder if it’s a Matt Goodier-style stopgap (he was given Radio 1 Breakfast for a few months in the 90s as the “permanent” host even though it was always a temp holding position), because I can’t see Vick or Jamie committing to a daily show in the long term (I had suspected Vick might not last the year; she’s brilliant but she has so much else going on, hope I’m wrong). Anyway… let’s see what happens! All seems a bit of a panic and Radio 1 in a bit of a tailspin this week, suspect Aled will do some serious thinking about the 12-18 month direction the schedule takes from here, suspect it may look quite different. Edit: If I was R1 management I would cling to Greg James like a life raft right now! Without him the entire house of cards looks weak. You need a few years to build up a future Jordan-like “heir” to be the main star on the station. Shoehorning in the likes of Dean would be calamitous.

  23. What I can't understand is why they've replaced their biggest Northern presenter with a southerner who's incredibly posh and probably a multi millionaire? He's just not relatable. Jordan was the down to earth relatable guy. The lack of northern presenters on this station isn't good.

    Ken Bruce leaves Radio 2

Vanessa Feltz is another one jumping on the BBC bashing bandwagon... (unsurprising considering who she works for now) She was happy to take a wage from them for many years until she jumped ship. Funny how she's piping up with the ageism bollocks. All the people moaning at the BBC for "getting rid of him like they did Steve Wright"... The latter still works at R2, and Ken was signed up by GHR, not much the BBC can do if his mind is made up.

  27. At the risk of disappearing down this same rabbit hole as last time... There is - quite simply - no 'problem' to fix, and even more than that, improvements are being made all the time. The station has recently won a bunch of awards, there is more new talent than that has been for years, the presenter roster is diverse and inclusive.... Of course yes you could put MORE new talent on, or MORE diversity (e.g. Asian voices), but that's missing the point. The goal of equality should be to ensure everyone gets a fair go, and is not discriminated against. Clearly that has been happening at the station for a good while, and there is no need to 'force-fit' any further such changes - we can just let that happen naturally now as talent evolves and grows. It's also critical to keep a good focus on listener numbers, just as they are doing. It's idealistic to say that that doesn't matter and the station should push the boundaries further in daytime - quite simply without the strong figures, the station would be doomed. If anyone thinks the station sounds similar to commercial rivals in daytime, they really need to reconsider that view!!! R1 Dance / Relax are low-cost add-ons that will attract a few more people to the station, and they do offer a commercial-free option that is pretty unique. All in all Aled is doing a fantastic job, the station has rarely sounded better and has never had such a forward-looking presenter strategy!

  28. It's a bit sad knowing that this is the last ever time Alice will be on R1. She's always been one of my favourite presenters and listening to her show has always manged to put a smile on my face and often had me laughing out loud. Best of luck to her in whatever she does next.

    Hello New Members!

Hi everyone! My name is Isaac and I’m currently a Computer Science student. I am also a massive radio geek as well – I’ve been listening to Radio 1 now for 6 years and to The Official Chart for nearly 6 and a half years. I’ve been a long time lurker on this forum (5 years I think!) and I’ve loved reading the comments and posts about Radio 1 ever since I found this. I’ve always wanted to join in the fun with comments and posts of my own but I’ve either delayed putting it off or been too shy to make a move. Hopefully, with everything strange going on, now is the right time. I look forward to getting more involved with the forum during times of big discussion here, whatever happens to Radio 1. Maybe a new presenter might join. Maybe Scott Mills will do 9 years in the afternoons. Maybe Jordan North will get the primetime slot he deserves. But for now … thanks for having me!

  31. Actually, I think Diane Abbott would be great on the chart - "and now a new entry at number 72, which means it's the biggest selling single in the UK this week, it's Liar Liar. I'll play you the number 23 after that, and we'll run down the top 10-36". The Official Chart with Diane Abbott - every Goosday from 4pm-76:30.

  32. I think 275k is pretty amazing for 24 hours! The Gregathlon got a million but that was over a week so 5 days, it was all in daytime, got heavy promotion & regular updates on all the daytime main shows and was more of an "achievement" thing. Scott & Chris only had 6 and a half hours of primetime R1 really (Drive on Tuesday when it was only starting so the hype wasn't there yet and it hadn't hit its stride plus breakfast on Wednesday). A lot of it was evening, overnight, mid-morning, afternoon- hardly peak time. What an amazing 24 hours of radio though- the Non-Innuendo Bingo was possibly one of my favourite ever Mills moments (so hilarious), the Chris Stark roast, Sex Hour, Charlie Sloth Fat Jokes all brilliant and it really got going with Matt Edmondson, Alice Levine, Nick Grimshaw and Greg James there from about 10pm-4am. That was just the Lolathon and Radio 1 at its best and the jokes got much filthier! Only criticisms: they could've booked slightly better/bigger celebrities to come in- they got Ricky Gervais, Russell Brand etc but there could've been more big names maybe? Also- the music got really boring after a while. They must've played Lorde and Kings of Leon about 10 times each. Best bits were Ten Minute Takeover, Grimmy's picks (like Kaytranada, Florence & The XX etc- sounded amazing on late night radio and were great throwbacks to his time doing that show), Mistajam had some good ones, Workout Wednesday on Adele's slot: there should've been more of that and more variety- maybe some older tracks and ones Radio 1 hasn't played in a while. The playlist just got quite repetitive. Brilliant show, great job by Scott & Chris, hilarious, fantastic cause and loads of money raised! *hand clap emoji*

  33. It doesn't help that they now shorten some songs so they can squeeze in even more of the 'popular hits'. And they've definitely upped the music quotas (again), Scott has to play a song in the middle of Real or No Real now and it's been cut down to 3 facts instead of 4. Today there was only 2 facts because he spoke to Greg for too long - Greg goes "I feel short changed, isn't there normally 3?" to which Scott responded "yes but I've got to play the hits". Sounds like they've definitely been told to play more songs / not drop them.

  36. Hard to see it as anything but a demotion - going from the Afternoon slot succeeding Scott Mills and recently doing a fair bit of Breakfast cover to now Early Breakfast which is deemed a more off-peak slot. Though it may work out better in the long run for Dean. He seemed to draw a lot of the ire with criticism of Radio 1 recently and with his fast-track to weekday afternoons and then covering Greg recently there was the risk of him being seen as a bit of a 'golden child' fuelling even more backlash especially when popular DJs like Matt & Mollie and Katie were overlooked Whereas now he has a chance to make a slot his own and build a little community with the Early Breakfat crew. Plus with Matt & Mollie and Katie on daytimes now it's less likely to be viewed as him getting slots over them.

  43. Interesting to see how they handled this. I plan to save Scott and Dev's shows off the iplayer before they dissapear. I only dropped into Dev's show about 4.30 and he sounded upbeat. I do plan to have a proper seek through this though. Seems like they spent the first hour behind the scenes probably debating how to handle the situation, what the tone of the station should be. So Scott probably wasn't told to do anything differently during his time on air. Chris Price is back at Radio 1 now, he was working as a music producer at Radio 1 when September 11th happened. So has experience vastly with things like this. What happened last Wednesday was awful without question, but not on a scale of 7/7 or 9/11. I'm old enough to remember Radio 1's output on both of these occasions. Over 50 people (I believe, not sure of the exact amount) died on 7/7, the reports you hear on the vault on this site were recorded by myself. Scott was on breakfast and got reports in at 9.30, 9.45 and right before Jo Whiley at 10am. The rest of the day handed to Newsbeat frequently, but the Radio 1 playlist never altered that much I recall. I remember Colin & Edith in the afternoon being upbeat/friendly but respectful at the same time. Scott had to cover for Vernon Kay, who was meant to be on from 4pm as Scott was on Breakfast in for Chris Moyles. He spoke to Vernon on the phone I'm sure. I planned to save that day from listen again as it were back then, I stupidly never did for some reason. I do have Scott's show from 21st July 2005 when they tried the same again in London but failed, nothing much out of the ordinary on that day though only mentions of it on Newsbeat. 9/11 was a totally different animal. The world felt it like it was on the verge of the biggest war since WW2 all that week, and the shock of the attacks were broadcast live around the world. Nothing much but the Newsbeat reports and small bits of other stuff survive from Radio 1 around then. Remember, there was no iplayer or listen again to save. But if you listen to the 2.30pm and 3pm Newsbeat reports by Clare Bradley from Mark & Lard's show, you can clearly hear the shock in her voice as she talked of the planes hitting the towers and people jumping to certain death from 110 floors in the air. Radio 1's daytime playlist altered quite a bit that week, usually songs from the last 5 years until that point. Although Moyles played Basement Jaxx - Romeo and Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag on the afternoon, which were normal mood Radio 1 playlist songs. I think things got solem in the days after. Moby's Poreclain was played a lot, Zero 7's Destiny was another. I also remember The Avalanches - Since I Left You, Bob Marley & Lauryn Hill - Turn Your Lights Down Low, Spiritualized - Stop Your Crying. Travis - Side was another. Scott Mills and (I believe) Dr Mark Hamilton hosted a special edition of the Sunday Surgery at the end of that week. Very few, if anyone survives at Radio 1 from these events. Only Scott and Chris Price on the playlist team. So they haven't really been tested on such a scale. I don't know for sure but I imagine the Radio 1 bosses would use Scott primarily during a major obit situation. After him, who knows. I'd say Greg. As for the Queen, there are well placed procedures in place to deal with the event like mentioned in the above article. So it will be easier to deal with for Radio 1 in some sense than a terrorist attack, because they know exactly what they have to do. Diana dying was a huge shock, but I imagine Radio 1 will sound similar to this when the Queen does pass away. https://ia601504.us.archive.org/9/items/19970831Sun09591018BBCRadio1DeathOfDianaPrincessOfWales/1997 08 31 Sun 0959-1018 BBC Radio 1 - Death of Diana, Princess of Wales.mp3

  44. One of my favourite things about this is that on Heart's afternoon show in 1996, Chris Smith was reading the news for Scott. And 21 years later, on Radio 1's afternoon show, Chris Smith is reading the news for Scott.

  45. It wouldn't be the first time the Radio 1 bosses have done such a thing with their best presenter(s). Losing Scott would be a huge loss though, simply down to the fact that he's head & shoulders above anyone else there imo. As regards with Scott moving to Radio 2 in the near future, it can happen and I think will work even if he has to adapt a little. But by the time/if he goes R2, it'll have a different sound to now. I think pre 1980 music will feature a lot less, if at all during daytime hours. Look at it this way, Radio 2 is a changing station even more so than Radio 1. How many presenters during Scott's Radio 1 years (or slightly before) work on Radio 2 now? Chris Evans, Simon Mayo, Sara Cox, Dave Pearce, Mark Radcliffe, Jo Whiley etc. Plus one off shows. Not only that but I think some long standing presenters will be moving on from there over the next 5 years to make room. Radio 2 took a big controversial decision with cutting "Sounds of the 60's", wrong or right they are moving to a different age themselves. They are aiming to pull in people like me, from their late 20's who've long outgrown Radio 1 to people approaching 50 now. I gotta admit they are winning me over as well.

  46. I have to agree with you guys. I don't mind amount of music during Scott's and Greg's shows but in the first part of the day it's just unbearable. Clara's show has no content at all and the worst thing it just does not sound good unlike Capital or other commercial rivals. And the breakfast show sounds tired. In fact, I think that drivetime show sounds better than the breakfast one which is a shame and a main issue Radio 1 keep losing listeners IMO. On the other hand, I love weekend output. Dev's great so is Matt, Alice and Danny.

    Phil Clifton?

Seems unlikely, for several reasons. 1) He'd be an external appointment. Radio 1 tend not to bring in people from outside to host the breakfast show unless they're very well known, and even then, they haven't done so since the mid-nineties (Chris Evans and Zoe Ball being the two most recent, and even Zoe was paired up with Kevin Greening who was doing drive prior to the breakfast show). Phil is pretty much a non-entity, all he's done outside of X is a bit of stuff for Channel 4 and MTV, so why they'd pluck him out of obscurity for the Radio 1 Breakfast Show is beyond me. 2) He's 32. Enough said. 3) He's never done personality radio before. X probably let him show a bit of personality, but nothing close to the levels required for filling 17.5 hours a week. He's got no experience, so hiring him for that show would be a big risk (unless they were going for a more music breakfast show, but look how well that worked out during Grimshaw's tenure). 4) It's replacing like for like. Grimmy is a trendy hipster-like bloke from the north. Phil Clifton is a trendy hipster-like bloke from north. Chris Moyles even went as far as describing Phil Clifton as a "crap Grimmy" once. 5) The Wikipedia edit has very crude attention to detail. "He Left Radio x in December 2016 so he take over from Nick Grimshaw on The BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show. He will be Presenting the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show From April 2017." Seems more like a (very obscure) fraudulent edit than an accidental premature leak of inside information. Then again, Ben Cooper does have a tendency to make unexpected (read: poor) decisions, so who knows.

  48. Radio 1 are a different ball game to commercial radio, which is seen with sexual being turned to sensual (but no idea where they source that kind of edit though) Most of the muted swear words are added by the promo companies and record labels, we have some email us for the community station I work at, they prove the original track and a clean radio edit, from what I can tell all these radio edits sound the same so if it's deemed ok by the music team they'll just use the version sent to them like we do.

  49. The wooden panels of Radio 2 await him maybe? Although if you'd of told me in 2006 that Scott would still be on Radio 1 in 10 years time I wouldn't of been suprised. He continues to be the best on the daytime lineup, he deserves to stop on another 10 imo. He started alongside the likes of Chris Moyles, Mark & Lard, Simon Mayo, Clive Warren etc and is the only one left at Radio 1 who can turn his hand to anything. I mean thinking about different situations. If an event on the scale of 9/11 happened today could anyone on there apart from Scott be trusted to handle that properly on air...
