  1. Matt Edmondson really is an underrated gem of a broadcaster. Outstanding radio all week, but particularly a few minutes ago.

  3. Hello everyone Aled here, Head of Programmes at Radio 1. Thank you for all your passion for Scott, Chris and Radio 1 - the station’s success relies on fans like yourselves caring about radio and what we do and all of us at Radio 1 really appreciate it. Don't worry - I’m not planning on hanging around and cramping your style, I’m trying to get hold of Jono. I’ve used the ‘Contact us’ section but I’ve heard nothing yet, if someone on the board has his contact please ask him to email me. (It’s nothing bad!) Keep up the amazing work everyone, be as critical as you like, I’m sure Scott appreciates it. Thanks, Aled.

  4. Ah you cynics. If it was that orchestrated they'd not have stood at a finish line waiting for her last night only for her to arrive just as Newsbeat started.

  8. Think we are all gutted, but it's genuinely really exciting for him and a big scoop for Capital. I couldn't quite get into Roman's show, but I feel I'd be more tempted to listen to Jordan with Chris and Sian. Will have split loyalty with Greg!

Jordan North to leave Radio 1

Another aside - I think Sam and Danni are outstanding with a wide appeal demographically. Hope this gives them a chance for a big promotion.

  12. Actual LOL at Jordan and Scott just now: Jordan: oh god, they're gonna send me back to local radio - oh wait, all the jobs have gone. Scott: it's all coming from London now babes, Rock FM's not on anymore.

  13. God he has an irritating voice. Sounds so forced and unnatural. Reminds me of when Chris Moyles does his wacky deejay impression.

  14. This has been annoying me- one of the great things about RONR is the banter between Scott, Chris and the DJ and the flow of the game. It has the potential to be one of the funniest things on Radio 1 when they're on top form and the facts are funny. Stopping after 1 fact to play a song we've heard countless times is pointless and ruins the flow. It's happened a few times where they've only done 2 facts. Such a shame, especially now that they have such a good line-up with Greg on Mondays, Charlie Sloth on Tuesdays, Alice on Thursdays and Cel on Friday. They all have the potential to be hilarious and have been great the last few weeks, just drop the song in the middle and go back to 4 facts!

  15. Think that Radio 1 really needed this week, charity aside, to come together again. I don’t think they ever diverged, but the Jordan news I think was challenging and as a listener this week has secured that perception of the family again.

  16. It's been a great week of radio. Radio 1 at its best - promoting a great cause and all the DJs on air together and shows how much they all get along. This week has highlighted too just how great the likes of Greg, Matt and Katie are as broadcasters - they have been superb covering the challenge and in their genuine love and support for Mollie (who has been doing so well and is giving it her all). Lovely too to see Matt & Mollie get their flowers so much in the past month - both thoroughly deserve it and their kindness and good spirit has really shone through these last few days even more than usual. Matt's link yesterday about how Mollie has been a support to him and him to her at around 4.45pm yesterday was just so wonderful and heartfelt and what Radio is all about.

  17. The more I think about this, the less I understand it. Vick and Katie would be a good Going Home show without Jamie. What did happen in the aftermath of Jordan leaving. Did Katie initially turn it down and they persuaded her to change her mind? Did they see the reaction to Jamie and see that they needed Katie to balance out the loss of Jordan? Some odd chain of events has happened

    Greg's new contract

I wonder if this was always on the cards and is why Jordan has jumped - 2-3 more years of Greg and he’d be in Scott Mills territory of being passed over for Breakfast in favour of a younger DJ.

  21. I know it's a different kettle of fishh because Roman isn't moving to a rival station, but the contrast between Roman announcing he is leaving and the outpouring of love, and the BBC cancelling Jordan I find really jarring.

  22. This is the first time since I started listening to Radio 1 (2016) that I’ve been genuinely floored by an announcement. There have been a lot of changes and I’ve raised by eyebrows a few times but everything had some element of logic to it even if I wouldn’t have made the exact same choice. With regards to Jordan I would have bet a lot of money on him being a shoe in for R1 Breakfast next, the succession plan seemed very clear - Greg could go this year or next if he wanted to, after a good run, and you have a ready made Breakfast star in Jordan and the likes of Katie/Sam and Danni/Dean all capable of stepping in on Going Home at that stage. Jordan at Breakfast and Vick and Katie on Going Home wouldn’t feel like a downgrade from now! Now Radio 1 seems in a real pickle in terms of succession planning for Breakfast. I can only assume Jordan was given an offer he couldn’t refuse - if it’s him and Chris Stark for Capital Breakfast it’s a coup for Global, a truly national sounding breakfast offering, and something Radio 1 must have been unwilling to give him right now, more power to him! As for Jamie Lang - I won’t be harsh because these are real people and you never know how it pans out, but it’s completely inexplicable to me. From a show that deliberately pitched itself (they did an interview about this a year ago) as a show aimed at young people outside London to someone from Made in Chelsea, I just don’t know what they’re doing and I have to wonder if it’s a Matt Goodier-style stopgap (he was given Radio 1 Breakfast for a few months in the 90s as the “permanent” host even though it was always a temp holding position), because I can’t see Vick or Jamie committing to a daily show in the long term (I had suspected Vick might not last the year; she’s brilliant but she has so much else going on, hope I’m wrong). Anyway… let’s see what happens! All seems a bit of a panic and Radio 1 in a bit of a tailspin this week, suspect Aled will do some serious thinking about the 12-18 month direction the schedule takes from here, suspect it may look quite different. Edit: If I was R1 management I would cling to Greg James like a life raft right now! Without him the entire house of cards looks weak. You need a few years to build up a future Jordan-like “heir” to be the main star on the station. Shoehorning in the likes of Dean would be calamitous.

  23. What I can't understand is why they've replaced their biggest Northern presenter with a southerner who's incredibly posh and probably a multi millionaire? He's just not relatable. Jordan was the down to earth relatable guy. The lack of northern presenters on this station isn't good.

    Ken Bruce leaves Radio 2

Vanessa Feltz is another one jumping on the BBC bashing bandwagon... (unsurprising considering who she works for now) She was happy to take a wage from them for many years until she jumped ship. Funny how she's piping up with the ageism bollocks. All the people moaning at the BBC for "getting rid of him like they did Steve Wright"... The latter still works at R2, and Ken was signed up by GHR, not much the BBC can do if his mind is made up.

  25. If they haven't changed their emergency tape since 2004 we may get a few blasts of Outkast Hey Ya followed by The Sugababes Hole In The Head... Running gag from the old days that.

  26. I can see him staying on daytimes for a good number of years more, why move him when he’s still at the top of his game? Great news he’s signed a new contract.

  27. At the risk of disappearing down this same rabbit hole as last time... There is - quite simply - no 'problem' to fix, and even more than that, improvements are being made all the time. The station has recently won a bunch of awards, there is more new talent than that has been for years, the presenter roster is diverse and inclusive.... Of course yes you could put MORE new talent on, or MORE diversity (e.g. Asian voices), but that's missing the point. The goal of equality should be to ensure everyone gets a fair go, and is not discriminated against. Clearly that has been happening at the station for a good while, and there is no need to 'force-fit' any further such changes - we can just let that happen naturally now as talent evolves and grows. It's also critical to keep a good focus on listener numbers, just as they are doing. It's idealistic to say that that doesn't matter and the station should push the boundaries further in daytime - quite simply without the strong figures, the station would be doomed. If anyone thinks the station sounds similar to commercial rivals in daytime, they really need to reconsider that view!!! R1 Dance / Relax are low-cost add-ons that will attract a few more people to the station, and they do offer a commercial-free option that is pretty unique. All in all Aled is doing a fantastic job, the station has rarely sounded better and has never had such a forward-looking presenter strategy!

  28. It's a bit sad knowing that this is the last ever time Alice will be on R1. She's always been one of my favourite presenters and listening to her show has always manged to put a smile on my face and often had me laughing out loud. Best of luck to her in whatever she does next.

    Hello New Members!

Hi everyone! My name is Isaac and I’m currently a Computer Science student. I am also a massive radio geek as well – I’ve been listening to Radio 1 now for 6 years and to The Official Chart for nearly 6 and a half years. I’ve been a long time lurker on this forum (5 years I think!) and I’ve loved reading the comments and posts about Radio 1 ever since I found this. I’ve always wanted to join in the fun with comments and posts of my own but I’ve either delayed putting it off or been too shy to make a move. Hopefully, with everything strange going on, now is the right time. I look forward to getting more involved with the forum during times of big discussion here, whatever happens to Radio 1. Maybe a new presenter might join. Maybe Scott Mills will do 9 years in the afternoons. Maybe Jordan North will get the primetime slot he deserves. But for now … thanks for having me!

  30. If she's good I'm willing to change my mind, but until proven otherwise can we refer to Maya Jama within the context of Scott's show as the homewrecker?

  31. Actually, I think Diane Abbott would be great on the chart - "and now a new entry at number 72, which means it's the biggest selling single in the UK this week, it's Liar Liar. I'll play you the number 23 after that, and we'll run down the top 10-36". The Official Chart with Diane Abbott - every Goosday from 4pm-76:30.

  32. I think 275k is pretty amazing for 24 hours! The Gregathlon got a million but that was over a week so 5 days, it was all in daytime, got heavy promotion & regular updates on all the daytime main shows and was more of an "achievement" thing. Scott & Chris only had 6 and a half hours of primetime R1 really (Drive on Tuesday when it was only starting so the hype wasn't there yet and it hadn't hit its stride plus breakfast on Wednesday). A lot of it was evening, overnight, mid-morning, afternoon- hardly peak time. What an amazing 24 hours of radio though- the Non-Innuendo Bingo was possibly one of my favourite ever Mills moments (so hilarious), the Chris Stark roast, Sex Hour, Charlie Sloth Fat Jokes all brilliant and it really got going with Matt Edmondson, Alice Levine, Nick Grimshaw and Greg James there from about 10pm-4am. That was just the Lolathon and Radio 1 at its best and the jokes got much filthier! Only criticisms: they could've booked slightly better/bigger celebrities to come in- they got Ricky Gervais, Russell Brand etc but there could've been more big names maybe? Also- the music got really boring after a while. They must've played Lorde and Kings of Leon about 10 times each. Best bits were Ten Minute Takeover, Grimmy's picks (like Kaytranada, Florence & The XX etc- sounded amazing on late night radio and were great throwbacks to his time doing that show), Mistajam had some good ones, Workout Wednesday on Adele's slot: there should've been more of that and more variety- maybe some older tracks and ones Radio 1 hasn't played in a while. The playlist just got quite repetitive. Brilliant show, great job by Scott & Chris, hilarious, fantastic cause and loads of money raised! *hand clap emoji*

  33. It doesn't help that they now shorten some songs so they can squeeze in even more of the 'popular hits'. And they've definitely upped the music quotas (again), Scott has to play a song in the middle of Real or No Real now and it's been cut down to 3 facts instead of 4. Today there was only 2 facts because he spoke to Greg for too long - Greg goes "I feel short changed, isn't there normally 3?" to which Scott responded "yes but I've got to play the hits". Sounds like they've definitely been told to play more songs / not drop them.

  35. Exactly - I love Jordan lots - easily my favourite radio presenter of recent years but I 100% get the BBC's position which has been dramatically affected by what Greatest Hits Radio did with Ken Bruce. They are bound to be mighty p'd off that one of their biggest talents is leaving them. I think Aled's words were respectful but low-key. You start to wonder if this is why Jordan didn't cover Breakfast at the start of the year as all this was starting. This won't have started this week but been an ongoing dialogue. I just hope the move to Capital works for Jordan. I get the impression the big commercial stations have a more liberal attitude to how their Breakfast presenter behaves versus the rest of the schedule.

    Jordan and Mollie

Many of the presenters are perfectly good on their own - Jordan a clear example. Though Jordan's style lends itself to having somebody to bounce off.

  38. It is a bit of a bizarre one. I couldn't imagine back 20 years ago Judge Jules doing a live Radio 1 show and Dave Pearce turning up wasted saying your tunes are pish. Usually all the dance jocks teamed up back then, and told Westwood he was shite.

    Chris Start post-Scott

If anyone wants to hear some early Chris Stark appearances, the first I could find was the 8th June 2010 podcast when he thought Scott was going to be called up to play for England in the World Cup, and a very funny one on 29th June 2010 where he was talking about spending an entire month's wages on World Cup merchandise.

Ah, now it does need an apostrophe. Use an apostrophe whenever you mean 'it is', and don't when you don't. Unless, of course, you're joking.

  46. As I mentioned in the chatbox, Bauer stations are broadcasting the brits this year, between 7 and 11pm, I believe they may have snagged exclusive radio rights to it for the next few years. As I type this, Alice and Clara from R1 are on ITV2 doing the red carpet show, which I think is just pre recorded interviews and some montages. Update: Tried to listen to the networked Bauer show, gave up after 5 minutes, truly awful, even by Bauer standards

  49. Well firstly, he doesn't work for BBC News so the need to be balanced isn't as important and the things he posts on social media are to try and make positive cases to his followers as well as being funny so can't see anything wrong with that. Not like he's slagging off Theresa May or being really political- it's his private account anyway. Secondly, I would put money on Greg not being the new Capital Breakfast host. I'd say it'll be Will Manning or Roman Kemp- two brilliant presenters Capital already have who would be perfect for the target audience and would fit in with George and Lilah. Greg's style is just SO different to Capital- his games, features, chats with Chris Smith, use of language and expression etc wouldn't go with the Capital style. He has so much freedom on Radio 1, gets to do other things like Children in Need, the Gregathlon and has been allowed to take the BT Sport cricket job (if he took Capital Breakfast, he'd have to quit the cricket job because most of it's in the middle of the night). And of course, he's probably next in line for the Radio 1 Breakfast Show. Really can't see it happening
