Nick Grimshaw's new show

Random songs too. Unless he really likes the usual R1 playlist.

I'm not a fan of the Entertainment News, but I realise that there are people that enjoy them, so that's on me. Also his theme is terrible - again, not for me. The biggest issue for me is that his show sounds basically the same as his Breakfast Show. It's quite annoying, because his old show wasn't great to start with. And then the overall mood of an afternoon show should be different than a morning one.

I do really think that he sounds much better. Maybe that's because he had more sleep or he's just well rested after his holidays, but he seems more engaged in the show. So I'm willing to give him a chance, but for now it's still quite mediocre (I know it's been only an hour).

I think every presenter is allowed ‘their thing’

Greg - geeky stuff

Dev - his unique self deprecating sense of humour

And for Grimmy - it’s showbiz - that’s his thing

it got him the breakfast gig and he was friends with the stars that had a lot of influence in the show

bringing entertainment news and almost co host seems right it’s the right ingredients for him to thrive. I genuinely think Nick has a lot more energy in this show from what we’ve heard so far,  it sounds like he actually wants to be here which is more than the last year of breakfast. He’s involving callers and their stories and looking for input with a format. Personally I wasn’t thinking it would be much but actually really enjoying Grimmy in this new slot, an excellent swap for him and Greg - both in their right places

I listened for a bit

For me it was very much like his old show just at a different time

Probably because he has the same producer and the entertainment presenter as his old show, so they've just ported the old R1 Breakfast show to drivetime

Missed the Annie bit

It'll never be anything like Mills on drivetime - i maintain they should have put him back there with this change and maybe Grimmy on 1-4

I was expecting a little bit more

Just a quick example: The "Nick picks the best Beyonce song" part. I thought it was gonna be some kind of guessing/voting game, but instead he just played the song at read a few reactions. Why didn't they expand this a little? What's the worst than can happen? One less playlist song to play in the hour? :)

This week is the only week I’ve properly listened to Grimmy’s new show. Within an hour I was bored of him. Same old Grimmy, same voice, without any other people in the studio.

Greg has triumphed. Grimmy has flopped. It’s the truth. Grimmy is only in this slot because the producers are keeping an eye on his performance. I give it 2 years, and that’s being lucky.

I think this is subjective really. I'm really enjoying Grimmy on 4-7 at the moment (even if it seems im the only one :D) Grim suits this time slot nicely I think, and I like the warmth that the show has. Maybe a little too much music, but I love the Annie Mac chats and the Honesty Game. Nick works best when he's on air with another presenter, a bit like Alice Levine does.

You could say its an 'Unpopular Opinion' (i'll leave) but I'm not warming to Greg on breakfast yet. I liked the Pass the Pasty and first week stuff but since then its seemed a bit empty, and the features it does have doesn't live up to his drivetime stuff like Rage and What's My Age Again (unpopular opinions is a bit basic and the updated shouldn't be news falls flat with Roisin, Game of Phones is only really interesting for those taking part). Plus, all of the 'this is what's been happening overnight' was literally what Grimmy was doing when he presented the show, just presented in a different way to suit a wider audience, making the show feel less personal.

I really want to warm to it, as I was so excited on the first day because it sounded like a jam-packed breakfast show like in the CM days what made it a must-listen,  and I really like the imaging, but unlike the Chris Moyles Show or Grimmy's show,  I'm not too fussed when I have to turn off at 9 for work

If there is literally anyone else who agrees with me let me know lol

I'm surprised at how rubbish the trails for the show are - literally just the jingle and Grimmy saying the days and time it's on. It doesn't provide much of an incentive to listen - surely it should contain highlights clips. It's not like there aren't any, the shows been on for over two months. It's the same for Greg's show actually, unless there's something specific the next day they're promoting. I remember the days of a daily breakfast and drivetime trail. Surely they're not that hard to make, especially as Greg has a highlights montage every day at 9:10 anyway.

    • Jesus christ, Olivia Rodrigo was around 3 years ago!?! I thought she was only born in 2019. Anyway. They are doing it to rival commercial networks, on the main 2 lists anyway with rotating them more. Which all in all is a pit of misery. I'm sick to bloody death of Stick Season, it's an utter bag of mediocre wank that makes me even prefer James Blunt circa 2005. Radio 1 still is more expansive however, loved stuff they play and make their own early days, like Jungle Back on 74 like last year.  They can't lose doing stuff that, or else they become bland like everyone else. They have done that for many years though. I heard a song on a March 2001 aircheck from Chris Moyles recently and rediscovered a song by Kings Of Convenience, called Toxic Girl. Totally lost over 25 years but totally love it like it's new. Radio 1 has always played the big time pop stuff since your nan was 3. But they always have and still do throw something on the playlists that isn't what everyone else has. I hope they continue to do that as it sets them apart.
    • I think they are looking too much into this and need to get a proper job where you have to get up at 5am.
    • Zayn's current song isn't on the R1 playlist so would be odd for him to do an interview I guess, not sure either would want it?
    • You have both presented together before your show on Capital. Have you spent time together as friends since, or is the reunion like getting to know one another all over again?   I’m a long time listener in my mid 30s and now outside the R1 target audience age… Chris is into barbecuing and Jordan is into air frying, have you both noticed a change in the other since the days of R1? And are you under any pressure to be on trend at Capital?
    • What do you both miss most about your time at R1?
    • How are you finding the early mornings, and having your afternoons free? Was it easy getting to grips with a different desk and play out system? Do you have any upcoming OBs and anything else exciting planned for the show that you can exclusively share with Unofficialmills? 😀
    • This research is based on the DJs’ voices - pitches, speech rates and fillers like ums and ahs they use - so it’s not affected by sound effects. But yes according to the report Scott is listed as a Radio 2 DJ instead of Radio 1.
    • The playlist has definitely got a bit narrower this year, it feels like. Artists like Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Drake and  Doja Cat seem to be played in every show, even when they’re not on the playlist. Other artists who get a few plays a week, such as Niall Horan, always seem to have the same song played, in his case, Heaven. Whenever they dive into Calvin Harris’ backlog it always seems to be Slide and Promises pulled out, even though they’re two of his least upbeat songs. Most songs they play seem to have been from the 2020s, instead of throwing in a few older hits like Capital does, which is something I think they could do.
    • Jamie Laing out of the schedule for Going Home today - Lauren Layfield in with Katie Thistleton.
    • Bit of a scoop getting an exclusive interview with Zayn, I wonder why he decided not to do Radio 1 too?
    • Who are your favourite artists that are not anywhere close to being on the playlist?   Are there ever songs that make you want to start pulling your hair out (in general, no need to put anyone on blast lol)?
    • Hi to both, miss you loads on radio 1 and hope that you’re doing good at capital 🙏   What was the background to your exits from Radio 1? Do you have any regrets from how it ended?    This one’s more to Jordan, but do you enjoy TV presenting more than radio? What are your targets in TV?
    • I do think if you distracted by talking you wouldn’t put a podcast on in the car. To me unless you used to driving so often that you don’t get distracted and drive for long distances it feels suited to podcasts. I find it odd including Ryan Seacrest or Howard Stern as I don’t know who listens to them in the U.K. Can imagine Chris Evans distracting and annoying on radio in general same for Chris Moyles. I can imagine Scott as not too distracting maybe even in his radio 1 days although if I was a driver I could find Innuendo Bingo or Funny Business distracting based on the humour of the features but Scott’s got a very soft gentle tone of voice doesn’t come across as loud or in your face. I think when you are on in the working day where people maybe listening as said in car, in the office or tradespeople on a job listening to the radio theres a certain style needed
    • Yes, good on you doing your own music blog website. I get that point with the 100% all new music can be alienating but think thats more if the station were to do more totally new bands and artists the thing that new music shows that preceded Jack have always have reflected big artists national and international who have been around for a while be that few years to a decade or two whether playing new stuff from artists to Dua Lipa, Coldplay or Nia Archives. I find its bizarre how music curation has changed a lot in the last decade as what I like of what radio can do well is that ability to hear an audible description of a new artist and information about their music with sense of opinion and thought from the presenter and an interview with the switch to sound features and spotify playlists. It’s not that same magazine effect that Steve Lamarq and Jo Whiley could be an audible magazine show like the NME to Zane Lowe’s radio 1 show complimenting Gonzo which Saunders has revived for MTV
    • I would argue against that, I once drove my car into a post listening to Scott Mills.  But it was back in the day, he was doing Stupid Street with Chappers at the time!
