Nick Grimshaw Interview in the Sunday Times Magazine

It's a really revealing article actually. It's behind a paywall but I'll put the key points here.

• He parrotted the same line about listening figures and social media engagement Ben Cooper likes to use after every bad RAJAR but a bit more strongly - he said RAJARs are "almost meaningless"

• He signed a new contract last September which was the point when Ben Cooper asked him when he wanted to leave the breakfast show and Grimmy picked the time after he'd passed Tony Blackburn

• A standout memory is the show after the Manchester Arena bombing and having to guide people through it

• Other personal highlights consist entirely of guests - Harry Styles after the BRITs, Stormzy bringing in 20 pizzas and Alan Carr

• He thinks it's silly and fake to not namedrop the people you've been hanging out with

• He thought Angelina Jolie was cold and Will Smith was fake-nice and patronising to off-air staff but Kim Kardashian was surprisingly genuine

• He's never had a boyfriend but would like to try and get one now he'll have more time

• He wants to become a set designer in the future - he designed the Royal Academy's Christmas tree last year, did an internship at a set design company (Es Devlin) and is starting a set design course at Central Saint Martin's art school in September (I had no idea about any of this and it's really interesting)

So I wonder when they decided this, if Ben knew immediately if Greg would be the replacement ?

I wonder if Mills was approached first and said no - would be interesting to find out although we probably never will

I reckon Greg signed up when they went to the 4 day week i reckon that was the point they decided he was going on Breakfast and he did a bet of an Evans wanting only 4 early starts a week so they decided to give two of the other shows Fridays off as well

I STILL STILL say Mills should have been the replacement for Moyles in 2012, maybe about 2010 time would have been better but then where would he be now, probably Radio 2, at least the way things have gone he's reinvented himself and continues to do so with things like the chart and all

As if being a R1 DJ isn't a dream career. I'm not saying - you're bound to be that for the rest of your life, do just that, but it definitely sounds a bit weird to me. As if he's a radio DJ accidentally and would drop it if his other ideas kick off. Both Greg and Scott have always said that working at R1 is a dream come true and they feel so lucky to be able to do it. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but this is how I perceive this piece.

I have to say, Grimmy excelled with the Manchester Arena bombing show - the tone was spot on throughout, and guiding a nation of young people through such a tragedy was one of his best judged and needed breakfast shows.

I'd be interested in a revealing Greg interview that addresses his on-air partnership with Chris Smith and his attitude towards his new breakfast show next!

    • Just Vick and Katie on Wednesday (and presumably Thursday as well).
    • Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false.   Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global?  He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC.  Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful?   It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going.  Roman and Jordan have the same management team.  Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC.  They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer.  They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him.  If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker.  Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan.  None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones.  It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.
    • Wow, surprised he signed a new contract in September but it says a lot about Jordan that he continued to a very high standard throughout last summer/autumn if this was all going on in the background.
    • They knew Roman wanted to leave early last year but wasn't officially announced but he gave them time to sort replacement. Found and offered Jordan a deal in June or July and needed time to get Jordan out of Contract at bbc and roman to do notice  Jordan had dinner with Katie Vick and Arielle to ask advice and all said he should go.
    • And they told Radio 4’s Feedback that it was an ‘experiment’ to ‘look at the best way to serve young listeners’ but reaffirmed that 280 hours commitment.
    • I doubt he wanted to go to Global if a slot before he found out kemp was leaving.
    • We're hoping to get some answers in the coming weeks
    • From what he's saying on the Pod he's been trying to get out of r1 for a while. Looks like he needed to wait for a show on global to be available. Jordan had bbq last summer with most of thr global execs and he's referenced the deal was in place then. Obviously the hold up was r1 being stubborn
    • All seems to be back to normal this morning.
    • Indeed and Jordan was already friends with Sian Welby, Will Manning and Jimmy Hill.
    • It's great to see those friendships still thriving. I think the days of Radio 1 DJs and Capital DJs being unable to co-exist is long over. You used to either be firmly BBC or commercial, and you don't get the sense that's the case anymore.
    • Maia Beth will be presenting the Radio 1 Happy shows from the 27th April replacing Katie.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001ydkr
    • Vick and Jordan together on Insta (with Ariel’s) in Ibiza. You do imagine Jordan’s ex colleagues have a very different attitude to him than management. Comments on Help! And very subtle comments on Capital Breakfast suggest Jordan was frustrated with Radio 1 / BBC management.
    • I can name quite a few people on this forum who would be better presenters than Danny.
    • His NYE shows were very good. Only thing I would say is he was shackled down slightly there. During his peak he played some great trance stuff in the late 90s and early 00s. So if he were to do a regular show that would have to feature more. Aside from I'd love to see him back.
