Gregathlon 2018: Pedal to the Peaks Challenge

Running (cycling? climbing?) from the 26th February to the 2nd March. Greg will do the show every day with Adele Roberts co-hosting. (Alice Levine did it last year - is she out of favour or just unavailable?)

The guy's a machine, credit to him. I can barely even cycle to the shops without getting tired. Absolutely incredible, best of luck to him. Should make for some good radio moments as well.

Fairly sure Alice is in the US on her 'My Dad Wrote a Porno' tour and then comes back in time to start weekend breakfast with Dev on 17th March.

I would imagine Jordan would cover Adele's show that week if she's going to be on the road with Greg. The fact he'll be wearing a microphone and the DJ's can just fade him up at any moment is a great idea! Kudos to him, because like yourself, I wouldn't be able to do such a thing!

Really looking forward to this and I also think the mic thing is a very clever idea.

I wonder how the chart will work on that Friday? Last time they did it on Scotts show but it’s supposed to be Scotts first show with Maya Jama so I’m not sure how that will work?

Scott's doing the chart from 3-4! Did think the same thing at Maya Jama, doubt it'll be a joint co-host for the chart though.

Thanks very much. Just a quick question, how do you get this scheduling information so early before it’s on? I use the radio times website and uk TV guide but they only go 2 weeks in advance

No problem - its on a site called digiguide, had it for a while now, goes up to around 21 days I think!

And so the challenge has begun...

Snowdon ✅

Now he's on his bike to do the show with Adele from Denbigh, North Wales. (in a BBC truck in Myddleton College (?) car park, photos on Adele's instagram story).

Unrelated but Adele's using a variation of that bed that Matt used for all nearly all his links at the weekend.

And Greg still isn’t there, an hour late.

They also seem to be having quite a few technical issues with how cold it is.

Adele has also said that today is his shortest cycle and is also meant to be the warmest day this week so I’m a bit worried for him for the rest of the week.

I'm wondering whether this is a challenge too many as well - hopefully he'll be able to do it and won't be screwed by the weather.

Only £19,000 raised so far. I thought it would be quite a bit higher than that and I think Greg sounded a bit disappointed in that as well.

Can anyone remember how much they'd raised at this point at the last Gregathlon? I agree, it doesn't sound like much. The LOLathon was rather disappointing if I remember as well, maybe Radio 1 has bled its listeners dry over the last few years. The Moyles longest show got £2.8m in 2 1/2 days, whilst last Gregathlon only broke £1m in a week (plus one day of heavy pushing) and the LOLathon managed £275k - basically a tenth of the Longest Show every in just under half the time.

I think the total will rise a lot, certainly today and tomorrow. Adele has posted a picture on Twitter of snow in wherever they spent the night last night. I can also confirm that there is a similar amount of snow on the ground where I am in Scotland, and it'll be worse inland where Ben Nevis is!

They're pushing it in almost every link today - I don't know whether they were planning to anyway, or if it's to try and get the total up a bit more.

Each text is worth £5, which might also be a factor - I'm sure it used to be less, £2, £3 maybe? So maybe the revenue gained from making it £5 is less than the revenue lost from fewer people texting.

Found this on the Gregathlon 2016 website.

10. If you enter the keyword incorrectly, but your text message is sent to 70011/70703/70005/70010/70510, you may still be charged £1/£3/£5/£10 via a confirmation text message, in which case your donation will still be made to Sport Relief.

Different text numbers donate different amounts - they used to use 70011 as the main number to donate £1, then they changed to 70703 for £3 and now they're giving out a number that donates £5 (70205)

Adele's doing a terrific job this week - especially seeing as there's not all that much happening a lot of the time!

"Still waiting for Greg... He's not here yet... He'll be here soon... Nearly here... Any minute now... Ah Greg's arrived! Anyway, it's time for Annie Mac, we'll do it all again tomorrow".

Just announced on air that the challenge is over. Greg and Adele sounded really emotional, although he seemed to be trying to see the positives and having a laugh about it. Absolutely gutted for Greg. But what a hero. An absolutely incredible week of radio, and an absolutely incredible three days of challenge even though he couldn't finish. I have no doubt that if it wasn't for the weather forcing health and safety to call it off, he would've been able to do it. I can't imagine how he must be feeling right now.

I agree. He definitely would have completed it, and he sounds devastated at having to admit defeat. I have every respect for him and all his team that have done this with him.

One really moving quote from Greg yesterday, I'm not sure what radio if any you all do outside of these forums, but it really resonated with me so I thought it was worth drawing attention to

There has been a special podcast created, telling the story of the Gregathlon last week. It's available via Greg's pages on the website where you would download his podcast 'That's What He Said'. It's nearly an hour long, so should be a good listen!

The Gregathlon resumes TODAY! Last night after his radio show, Greg and his team made their way up to Moffat in Dumfries & Galloway where they were stranded last time and had to abandon the mission.

From today, he'll cycle from Moffat to Fort William and then climb Ben Nevis on Friday!

    • Jesus christ, Olivia Rodrigo was around 3 years ago!?! I thought she was only born in 2019. Anyway. They are doing it to rival commercial networks, on the main 2 lists anyway with rotating them more. Which all in all is a pit of misery. I'm sick to bloody death of Stick Season, it's an utter bag of mediocre wank that makes me even prefer James Blunt circa 2005. Radio 1 still is more expansive however, loved stuff they play and make their own early days, like Jungle Back on 74 like last year.  They can't lose doing stuff that, or else they become bland like everyone else. They have done that for many years though. I heard a song on a March 2001 aircheck from Chris Moyles recently and rediscovered a song by Kings Of Convenience, called Toxic Girl. Totally lost over 25 years but totally love it like it's new. Radio 1 has always played the big time pop stuff since your nan was 3. But they always have and still do throw something on the playlists that isn't what everyone else has. I hope they continue to do that as it sets them apart.
    • I think they are looking too much into this and need to get a proper job where you have to get up at 5am.
    • Zayn's current song isn't on the R1 playlist so would be odd for him to do an interview I guess, not sure either would want it?
    • You have both presented together before your show on Capital. Have you spent time together as friends since, or is the reunion like getting to know one another all over again?   I’m a long time listener in my mid 30s and now outside the R1 target audience age… Chris is into barbecuing and Jordan is into air frying, have you both noticed a change in the other since the days of R1? And are you under any pressure to be on trend at Capital?
    • What do you both miss most about your time at R1?
    • How are you finding the early mornings, and having your afternoons free? Was it easy getting to grips with a different desk and play out system? Do you have any upcoming OBs and anything else exciting planned for the show that you can exclusively share with Unofficialmills? 😀
    • This research is based on the DJs’ voices - pitches, speech rates and fillers like ums and ahs they use - so it’s not affected by sound effects. But yes according to the report Scott is listed as a Radio 2 DJ instead of Radio 1.
    • The playlist has definitely got a bit narrower this year, it feels like. Artists like Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Drake and  Doja Cat seem to be played in every show, even when they’re not on the playlist. Other artists who get a few plays a week, such as Niall Horan, always seem to have the same song played, in his case, Heaven. Whenever they dive into Calvin Harris’ backlog it always seems to be Slide and Promises pulled out, even though they’re two of his least upbeat songs. Most songs they play seem to have been from the 2020s, instead of throwing in a few older hits like Capital does, which is something I think they could do.
    • Jamie Laing out of the schedule for Going Home today - Lauren Layfield in with Katie Thistleton.
    • Bit of a scoop getting an exclusive interview with Zayn, I wonder why he decided not to do Radio 1 too?
    • Who are your favourite artists that are not anywhere close to being on the playlist?   Are there ever songs that make you want to start pulling your hair out (in general, no need to put anyone on blast lol)?
    • Hi to both, miss you loads on radio 1 and hope that you’re doing good at capital 🙏   What was the background to your exits from Radio 1? Do you have any regrets from how it ended?    This one’s more to Jordan, but do you enjoy TV presenting more than radio? What are your targets in TV?
    • I do think if you distracted by talking you wouldn’t put a podcast on in the car. To me unless you used to driving so often that you don’t get distracted and drive for long distances it feels suited to podcasts. I find it odd including Ryan Seacrest or Howard Stern as I don’t know who listens to them in the U.K. Can imagine Chris Evans distracting and annoying on radio in general same for Chris Moyles. I can imagine Scott as not too distracting maybe even in his radio 1 days although if I was a driver I could find Innuendo Bingo or Funny Business distracting based on the humour of the features but Scott’s got a very soft gentle tone of voice doesn’t come across as loud or in your face. I think when you are on in the working day where people maybe listening as said in car, in the office or tradespeople on a job listening to the radio theres a certain style needed
    • Yes, good on you doing your own music blog website. I get that point with the 100% all new music can be alienating but think thats more if the station were to do more totally new bands and artists the thing that new music shows that preceded Jack have always have reflected big artists national and international who have been around for a while be that few years to a decade or two whether playing new stuff from artists to Dua Lipa, Coldplay or Nia Archives. I find its bizarre how music curation has changed a lot in the last decade as what I like of what radio can do well is that ability to hear an audible description of a new artist and information about their music with sense of opinion and thought from the presenter and an interview with the switch to sound features and spotify playlists. It’s not that same magazine effect that Steve Lamarq and Jo Whiley could be an audible magazine show like the NME to Zane Lowe’s radio 1 show complimenting Gonzo which Saunders has revived for MTV
    • I would argue against that, I once drove my car into a post listening to Scott Mills.  But it was back in the day, he was doing Stupid Street with Chappers at the time!
