New Weekend Schedule February 2018

Oh good god. It's a whole compendium of awful.

  • Dev and Alice to take weekend breakfast together (not the obvious combination - Matt and Alice are far better together and it's a bit degrading to Dev to have a cohost forced onto him after over a decade of solo broadcasting. Then again, Alice will be away most of the time anyway. Strange they took her away from Phil Taggart, discarding him in the process, only to pair her up again with someone else three years later.)
  • Greatest Hits to continue with Maya Jama on Saturdays and Jordan North on Sundays (shocking that the hugely talented Jordan North only gets one day a week after all his hard work whilst the significantly less radio-talented and deserving Maya Jama steals the Saturday from him - if I were Jordan I'd feel seriously hard done by after three years of covering and being on ALL Christmas)
  • Matt Edmondson to move to the afternoon slot and get a celebrity cohost on Saturdays possibly once a month, so far Mollie King (Saturdays) and Scarlett Moffat (Gogglebox and Capital North East) have been confirmed but I can't quite work out how regular or permanent it is (I'm indifferent about the celebrities but at least he's rid of the Greatest Hits format)
  • Maya Jama will cohost with Scott Mills and Chris on Fridays (FFS. Interfere with the Scott Mills show at your peril.)

So Saturdays look like this:

06:00 Dev and Alice Levine

10:00 Greatest Hits with Maya Jama

13:00 Matt Edmondson with a celebrity cohost sometimes

16:00 Dance Anthems

And Sundays are:

06:00 Dev and Alice Levine

10:00 Greatest Hits with Jordan North

13:00 Matt Edmondson

16:00 Life Hacks/The Surgery

At least nobody's been binned off, I suppose. Glad Dev, Matt and Alice are still there although I think this is mostly a step backwards in the strength of the weekend lineup overall - ironically after I said the other day how it's the best it's been in years. Starts 24th February except Dev and Alice because surprise surprise Alice is on holiday and it doesn't start until 17th March.

Maya Jama joins BBC Radio 1 to host new shows

BBC Radio 1 today announced a new weekend schedule for the station - with new signings Maya Jama and Jordan North joining Radio 1 to host weekly shows, and celebrities including Scarlett Moffatt and Mollie King becoming Radio 1 DJs to present alongside Matt Edmondson.
  • New celebrity hosted show with Matt Edmondson including Scarlett Moffatt and Mollie King
  • New Radio 1 Weekend Breakfast show with Dev and Alice

Maya Jama will join Radio 1 to host Radio 1’s Greatest Hits on Saturdays (10am-1pm), and will also co-host with Scott Mills and Chris Stark Fridays, 1-4pm. Hailing from Bristol, 23 year-old Maya landed her first TV job in 2014, presenting MTVbase show TheWrapUp. She has since hosted a string of other music TV shows across MTV, 4Music, Channel 4, ITV and Sky Arts. She has presented a radio show on Rinse FM, and recently hosted the red carpet for The BRITs 2018 Nominations Show.

Maya says: “I’m so happy to be presenting alongside Scott Mills on Fridays. I'm sure I can learn a thing or two from him and beyond excited to have my own show on Radio 1 every Saturday, I cannot wait to start!”

Matt Edmondson will become the new host of the weekend 1-4pm show, and on Saturdays he will be joined by a monthly celebrity co-host with the likes of Scarlett Moffatt and Mollie King.

Matt Edmondson says: “I am ridiculously excited about inviting some big name co-presenters to join me on Radio 1 every Saturday. I can’t wait to work with Mollie and Scarlett, not to mention the ‘reveal-them-and-you’ll-be-immediately-fired’ list of amazing names we have lined up for the rest of 2018."

Scarlett Moffatt says: “I’ve always loved listening to Matt on Radio 1 so to present alongside him is going to be so much fun.”

Mollie King says: “I’m so excited to be co-hosting BBC Radio 1’s brand new Saturday show with Matt Edmondson. He always has me in stitches; we’re going to have a blast, bring it on!”

Following multiple stints as a presenting duo in 2017, Dev and Alice Levine will officially join forces to co-host Radio 1’s Weekend Breakfast show (weekends, 6-10am).  Celebrity MasterChef finalist Dev, and Alice who is about to embark on a world comedy tour, will be waking up listeners from 17 March.

Jordan North will host Radio 1’s Greatest Hits on Sundays (10am-1pm). Jordan began his radio career presenting on student and community stations like Preston FM and Spark FM and has also hosted shows on the likes of Rock FM, The Hits and Capital Manchester.

Jordan says: “What a great start to my 2018 - I'm absolutely made up! It's no secret that this has been a childhood ambition of mine, so to get my own show on Radio 1 and officially be part of the family is just amazing. To be honest, it's not properly sunk in, but I can't wait to be back on air and start presenting Radio 1's Greatest Hits.”

Radio 1 Controller Ben Cooper says: “It’s brilliant to welcome the next generation of superstars to Radio 1. Along with Maya, Jordan, Dev and Alice all starting new shows, Matt will co-present with the likes of Scarlett and Mollie, giving an exciting jeopardy to live radio at the weekend.”

Radio 1’s new weekend schedule kicks off on 24 February.

I haven't heard much of Maya Jama but I don't like that she's being wedged in with Scott & Chris on Fridays. Jordan North really got shafted just getting three hours on a Sunday. Also re: Alice, she will be over in the US & Canada for the My Dad Wrote A Porno tour from February 22nd to March 7th.

P.S. Ugh - don't understand why the Greatest Hits show is staying on!

Now this just got interesting! The first thing I thought when I read about these schedule changes was does this mean Alice could be on the way out of R1? Moving from the afternoons to weekend breakfast is a bit of a demotion I think.

At last - Jordan North has a permanent show!!! It may only be one day a week, but that does free him up for cover elsewhere on the station. We can only hope that Jordan continues to shine in this new slot and ends up taking the Saturday show too - as well as dropping the Greatest Hits brand!

What I did not expect is for Matt to remain at the station. I honestly thought the next weekend shake-up would see him leave. I'm not at all surprised Mollie King is confirmed to be one of the first co-hosts. She's certainly a favourite within R1. Scarlett would be good though. After all, she does have radio experience, so we can hope it pays off!

While I don't quite understand why Scott and Chris need a co-host for Fridays when they work perfectly together as it is, I'm not too bothered. Scott's show has been the more music focused of all the shows on daytime on a Friday for some time now. As long as it doesn't affect the content being out across the rest of the week.

I actually quite like this,  I think it will be  better with Dev and Alice together so there isn't so much cover. I'm also Glad The Matt Edmondson show is back (and hopefully the podcast) as the Greatest Hits show never suited him. I don't understand why they are putting their brand new DJs on a show dedicated to old music though. Why is Maya Jama needed too? Surley Jordan deserves both slots!

Really happy that Jordan has got his well deserved permanent slot but can't figure out why he doesn't have the mid morning on both days. Correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't Maya literally covered one show over Christmas, compared to Jordan who literally covered everyday over Christmas (including 2 6 hour shows!) She may deserve to join the cover lineup but not the main lineup yet!

Might start listening to weekend breakfast again now Alice is on it, but alas I've already moved my weekend breakfast listening to Moyles on a Saturday and Jason Manford on absolute on a Sunday.

My disappointment has moved on from Dev and Alice being paired up and Jordan only getting one show a week to Scott having Maya JAMA forced on him on Fridays.

Okay it's only one day a week but I just do not see what she can add - I don't recall her being particularly funny or entertaining when she covered for Alice in December, so what can she bring to a funny and entertaining show other than stilted attempts at banter? Certainly she'll never be as funny as Beccy or Chappers. I could be wrong, but from what I've heard of her - funny she is not.

Ah, who am I kidding, I'm still furious about Jordan being shafted. He's done DOZENS of shows over the last three years, and they've got better and better each time - Maya has done TWO. And they were a bit shit. Yet she gets one solo show and a co-host each week, and Jordan gets one show. Unbelievable.

Ben Cooper has a history of making baffling decisions, and this is the latest. I really do not rate him as controller, you'd always get what you expected with Andy Parfitt.

Unsure how to feel about this. I agree with what OohErr said, weekends were looking better than ever before this, and the only changes I expected were either Alice moving to weekdays or Dev/Matt leaving altogether.

I like the pairing of Dev and Alice. Alice always works better with someone to bounce off, however i’ll never be up early enough to hear it live! Alice’s show was always a good listen on a weekend afternoon.

I’m not so pleased on greatest hits staying. It takes up far too much space on radio 1’s schedule. Agree that Jordan should just get both days. I can see how Maya Jama is being ‘pushed’ in at this early stage with scott and chris on Friday (although I wish this was Alice instead) as they should hopefully give her more personality and gear her up to be a radio 1 peesenter. Shes very ‘in’ at the moment and i think giving her greatest hits is the best she could bring at this point until they nurture her into something bigger and better.

I cant see Matt’s show staying the way its been promoted. Its like when Cel started Sundays and he would have celebrity guests each week, until they essentially realised nobody was arsed about them and the show became stale. Thats what I worry will happen with Matt’s new ‘celebrity-filled’ show, and I still seriously dont understand how Matt and his content is very appealing to radio 1’s target audience, but at least hes off greatest hits now.

Not sure whether it's related or not - I could just be reading into it too much - but after playing Fifth Harmony and Work From Home, Matt Edmondson said something along the lines of "...and one day, when we're all fired, we can work for home and become vloggers".

Although it's good that he's getting his show back and being rid of the Greatest Hits format, weekend afternoons have fewer listeners than weekend mornings I think (although I could be wrong).

I’m really pleased for Jordan that he finally has his own permanent show, but as has already been pointed out, it’s rather perplexing how they can give only one permanent show to someone who’s been covering for years and was on nearly every day over Christmas & New Year, yet have someone who’s only ever covered a couple of shows two permanent shows.

I’m also at a loss to why they’ve transformed the weekend 1-4 show, which has historically been a music focused show with a couple of entertainment features (with Jo Whiley, Huw Stephens, Alice Levine etc) into what will undoubtedly be a continuation of Matt’s old show with a myriad of entertainment features. Don’t get me wrong, I really like Matt and I’m glad that he’s finally got a free slot to resurrect some of his old content and his podcast,  but I just think that slot was better suited to Alice.

And as for Maya Jama. She is talented, but I don’t think she’s ready for her own permanent show just yet, and she certainly shouldn’t be butting in on the Scott Mills show. If anyone has to co-host on a Friday it should be Alice Levine. Maya should just have been put on the cover presenter line-up, and maybe given one of the 3-4am slots (as I fail to see the need for two 1 & 1Xtra’s stories show per week).

Speaking of Alice, I’m pretty mortified that she’s just been kicked off her weekend afternoon show and thrown in with Dev when hardly anyone is listening relative to the afternoon show. I’m sure she’ll work well with Dev (she has in the past), but imho she works much better with Matt. Maybe a Matt and Alice co-host in the weekend afternoon slot could have worked well?

It has to be said, these recent changes have certainly made the whole station very erratic.

Ps. Whilst I’m on a rant, I’d stop this David Rodigan show repeat in the 4-6am show on a Sunday right now. I don’t think it’s the right show for that time slot at all. I’d switch it for either Rene LaVice or Benji B. I’d also switch Huw Stephens and Charlie Sloth.

It would make more sense to put the greatest hits show on the afternoons and give Matt the morning slot back.

Well I’m not sure what to think of these changes and I’m not sure whether they were really needed especially in a time I thought the BBC were making cutbacks. Anyway some pros and cons:

Pros:

• Jordan has got his own show at last

• Matt has got his normal show back (which will hopefully mean his podcast as well)

• Although, it seems a bit of a step back for Alice, it gives her more freedom to do other things.

Cons:

• Maya isn’t really needed - Jordan could have done both the Greatest Hits shows and WHY does Scott need a co presenter.

• The Greatest Hits show is still around.

• Matt having a co-presenter every Saturday. Is he not able to present his own show anymore?

I’d say I’m quite 50/50 right now but I could be wrong and tune in with it all sounding brilliant!

Is the Saturday Moyles show pre-recorded?

Cant understand the Scott thing on a Friday unless Chris is taking Fridays off

Also will Matt still be the cover for Scott ? or will this be someone else

Scott and Chris will both be present on Fridays - Maya is simply another co-host. Bosses might decide to pair Chris and Maya together if Scott has a Friday off or is ill, in order for Matt to do other things. Time will tell, I guess.

The Maya Jama thing feels to me like how they introduced Clara Amfo. Drop her into a weekend show to build up a bit of profile then a few months down the line move her to weekdays. Or when Matt first appeared on Fearne's entertainment news. Perhaps a change to early breakfast is on the cards...

The consensus on here is that Jordan should have the weekend 10-13:00 slot on both days, and I do agree. I have a feeling however that ensuring diversity may play a part here - if Jordan got the Saturday Greatest Hits show it would literally be males on all day, apart from a co-host at breakfast (Dev and Alice, Jordan, Matt, MistaJam, Target, Sloth, Diplo). At least on Sunday you also have Katie Thistleton co-hosting with Cel.

I for one am pretty sad that Alice will be moving from weekend afternoons - it's the time slot I probably listen to the most.

Really bizarre changes.
The biggest positive is Jordan finally gets a permanent show FINALLY.
Maya reminds me of the Jameela Jamil experiment and we all know how that ended.
I enjoy The Greatest Hits Show but I wish they would use more tracks other than the late 90s/00s. But hey ho.
Alice teaming with Dev is a kick in the balls to Dev after all this time on his own. Still at least it means they both have a few more years with the station so it would seem.
Matt getting 1-4 should be good old format. Not sure about the Co host ideas though.
Only time will tell.

Funny thing that I was flipping through channels a few months ago and saw her on an NBC comedy "The Good Place", where she co-stars along with Kristen Bell and Ted Danson.

Side note, did anyone hear Maya’s newsbeat intro at 13.30 on Christmas Eve? It was so dire it was cringeworthy. She went into it late, and left the headline bed running for the entire bulletin. She ruined it for 1Xtra as well as there was an awkward silence after Reece went into it on time. Exactly the same at 14.30 as well. She REALLY needs to work on her newsbeat intros.

Listened to them all, absolute dogshite. Not that news intros are the be all and end all of being good on the radio - but if you can do them well, all the better, and if you're crap anyway you can't even introduce the news properly you probably shouldn't even be there.

Another thought about Jordan - I wonder whether he'll start getting more daytime cover now, after he filled in for Clara over Christmas, other than doing early breakfast. I'd quite like to hear him doing a week of afternoons or drive to see what sort of features he'd do. Drive was his last slot on Rock FM. I wonder whether he has another job during the week? He stopped doing five days a week at Rock FM in June 2016, and I know he lives with his parents now but he must still have bills to pay.  I also wonder whether he'll move to London or commute from Preston each week.

Agree hopefully this will pave the way for more Jordan cover as he is great. The pair up with Maya  Scott and Chris on a Friday seems interesting move but then again it might help her learn to introduce news  Glad to have matts show back but don’t understand why dev is still on breakfast

anyone know what happened to the original content podcasts we were meant to be getting when we got the last schedule change? Seems we just have artist takeover 3-4am did they get scrapped or never happen

Mixed feelings. Matt Edmondson's the big winner I think- no longer restricted by the Greatest Hits format and gets to reinvent his show at a new time.

Dev and Alice Levine must be seriously annoyed, Dev more so as it's never a good sign when the bosses think you need a co-host after doing it for so long. Alice has a lot of other stuff on so it may suit her to not be so tied down to Radio 1 but think it's a real shame she's being lost from the weekend afternoons. Great presenter and hilarious, suited that slot perfectly. They'll probably work well together though.

Delighted for Jordan North- yes, we can say it could;ve been 2 days but to get a permanent show is brilliant and well deserved for him.

Maya Jama- lets wait and see. Don't know why people are so quick to criticise after hearing one show. Scott, Greg, Grimmy, Annie etc all started somewhere and I doubt their first ever R1 show was anything special. Hate the idea of her co-hosting with Scott and Chris on Fridays but it may work, let's see.

Wish they ditched the Greatest Hits 3-hour show and made it more of a "we'll play a few Greatest Hits an hour across the weekend shows" thing to let Maya and Jordan;s personalities come through more.

Wild card here, just a thought... Maybe Aled is trying to get a zoo format back to breakfast, and Maya could be the new "Becky" with Scott and Chris, making a breakfast team in readiness for the departure of Grimmy, put this team on breakfast for a couple years until Ken Bruce or Steve Wright or Simon Mayo retire, opening a door for Scott to R2 and then bring a new breakfast Jock in (Greg) to team up with Maya and Chris for breakfast circa 2021 or something?

It's not been unknown for an older R1 presenter to take over breakfast after a younger one in the past and Aled is a radio geek like Scott and Greg and Moyles so maybe he is changing things back a little

I've certainly noticed that Scott and Grimmys shows have more talking specially Scotts breakfast show

On Scott and Breakfast, when they covered over Christmas and NY if it was Scotts team why did they do Grimmys shit bangers rip off and not their own bangers ?
