Ben Cooper: Age isn’t a number it’s an attitude

Refreshing to hear someone finally talking about the value of older talent to Radio 1. I'd argue Scott - who's perhaps an older star now - can connect better than some of the younger DJs to younger audiences. An interesting piece with Ben Cooper - who also admits to being dyslexic and not very academic - here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/men/thinking-man/radio-1-controller-ben-cooper-station-needs-regenerate-every/

It seems as if he's resigned to the fact that the average age isn't budging - which is a good thing I think. It's a bit rich coming from the guy who took Mills off drivetime literally because of his age (although it probably extended Scott's time on Radio 1 by a good few years so I might forgive him for that one).

It's the first time I've seen a reason that Radio 1 are battling to keep their audience young - to make them loyal to the BBC throughout their lives.

Although I would argue that not having a mainstream radio service for those aged between 24 and 35 scuppers that argument. People will just flock to commercial radio and might not come back to BBC Radio.

I'd argue they've made it more difficult messing about with BBC Three and talking about pooling budgets with Radio 1 (no doubt for further cuts). I'd say the reason I'm still with Radio 1 outside of target audience is 6Music doesn't really speak to me, BBC local radio and Radio 2 are targeting a demographic much older. There was so much focus on targeting the pre-teens but there needs to be a better strategy for 25+ and under 45.

I think Grimmy will go for the 9 years on breakfast

As for Mills, I reckon he will stay as is - relevant for another 2 to 4 years then maybe start to transition to R2 maybe the same way Coxy did by still covering work for R1 but covering R2 as well

Did he not mention recently hes just signed up gain anyway?

Think your right (I think you are a R1 DJ hiding behind an alias.... and if you are WOW love it that I am talking to you on a forum...) Love his show and it appeals to me so much because it hits my age range (I am 37) as well as a good time as I am a shift worker so can usually catch him

Like Greg as well and Grimmy

For me (as I kept tweeting at the 50th) Scott and Greg are the Mike Read and Mayo of my generation

Would love to see Scott cover another stint on breakfast

I think Grimmy isn't going anywhere yet either

    • There was a time when everyone knew Zane Lowe or Annie Mac or Judge Jules or Dave Pearce or Annie Nightingale. Does the Radio 1 generation know the current bunch?
    • Looks like it's off to Preston!
    • Would be nice to give more presence to the specialist shows over bank holidays. Surely the best way to promote new music credentials over anthems? As much as I accept it's very popular.
    • Peak radio 1 ! I agree with Bluestraw there was huge presence by specialist presenters then , certainly something I think radio1 could do more of now. Remember the takeover where specialist DJs would swap into main shows for a week? Or do we recall In New DJs We Trust, the competition on Chris moyles show where the winner would get a DJ set at radio 1s Ibiza weekend, and that is how Danny Howard’s radio career starters
    • Yeah. He started on R1 in the late 90's when they used do the 'Sessions in the Nations' where they used to split for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He then moved to daytimes, firstly on weekends in 2003 then they replaced Mark & Lard on the mid afternoon slot in 2004.  Then he moved to late evenings as a specialist DJ.
    • Thanks for sharing that - I don't think I've seen it before. Didn't realise that Colin Murray off of Countdown and R5L used to be on R1! Several other current R2/R5L/R6M names there too.
    • 29th April has updated to show Dan back as presenter but still Nels in for Alyx on Introducing Rock.
    • Where do we think Radio 2 in the Park will be this year? Personally I'm thinking Swindon after Scott's clue of it having many roundabouts and since Big Weekend is at Luton I can't imagine they'd go to Milton Keynes.
    • Yeah, I feel like they need a big push on Jack to cement him in his new position. But it shouldn't just be Jack, you've got Sian and Alyx for instance, who are relatively new faces.
    • Now in it's third week, the new Capital Breakfast Show seems to be settling down well and there are more of the informal, random Jordan topics appearing.  Though it is clear he wants to be seen slightly differently. It really is a very decent listen.
    • Just watched that advert and it made me realise quite how many 'big' specialist presenters there were back then
    • I've been reminded of this Radio 1 cinema advert. I remember being so excited to see it. The In New Music We Trust era. Everything felt so cool, even if they had Westwood.
    • Just Vick and Katie on Wednesday (and presumably Thursday as well).
    • Unless people can provide a source for this information then it should be treated as false.   Why would Jordan sign a contract with the BBC in the autumn when he agreed a deal with Global?  He could have left in August and not had to deal with the BBC.  Vick who doesn't really like Global why would she recommend him to go there and then warn him in her post to be careful?   It's been whispered from October that Roman was thinking of going.  Roman and Jordan have the same management team.  Why would they put Jordan in a place where he would have to battle with the BBC.  They could have agreed a deal with Global for Jordan in the summer.  They might have had to pay first couple months but they would do they to secure him.  If they had known about Roman wanting to leave they could have paid Roman off to get Jordan on air quicker.  Global would also not had legal around BBC contract to deal with and would not have had to pay the BBC to release Jordan.  None of what people say makes sense and if it did happen the way people say then BBC are not the stupid ones.  It really is not a good look to be talking with Global for 6 months, to then sign a contract with a the BBC, continue to talk to Global behind BBC's back after signing and then couple of months later want to leave and to throw a hissy fit as the BBC are not giving you what you want when you want it. That not a good light for Jordan or his management.
    • Wow, surprised he signed a new contract in September but it says a lot about Jordan that he continued to a very high standard throughout last summer/autumn if this was all going on in the background.
