Target Audience

Does anyone else feel that Radio 1 need to broaden their target audience?  As of now it is 15-29 but being 26 myself currently,  I can't see myself switching to another station as my main preference within the next 5 years.  I think 15-35 would be a lot better.

Anyone listening beyond 29?

I'll think they will decrease it than increase it, 15-25 would be more likely in the future. The R1 Breakfast show has had its target audience cut to under 25's so partly that's the reason why they could drop their target audience.

I'll think whatever way they do though they are going to lose ratings. If they drop the audience then all the older listeners will drag their way to Radio 2/Heart, if they increase the audience then I could see more chance of younger viewers driving away to Capital, KISS or even 1Xtra.

All this talk of making the target audience higher, lower etc... but what are you all hoping would happen, music taste is different in ever human alive,  some R1 presenters are way over the TA but are still there, to me, you either like radio 1 for the music and presenters or you don't, go over to radio x if you want some rock :D

You're literally borderline Radio 2 now. If R1 and R2 overlapped, it wouldn't be justifiable moneyspending and so both stations would suffer. They shouldn't be competing against each other, more working alongside each other.

I think they should lower their TA demographic if that's what BC is so keen to do with breakfast, you'd think station-wide they should be focused, really, on 13-20 year olds.

I'm 33 and I'm not going anywhere anytime soon. I still like a broad range of new music and nobody does it anywhere near as well as R1, so there's nowhere to go anyway. I think Greg in particular does a great job of keeping both the demographic and the likes of me happy.
