Nick Grimshaw: New Breakfast Show Host

Congratulations to Grimmy on getting the breakfast gig and I'm VERY excited to see what he can produce, I'm a big fan of his, I think he's very talented and it's a very good move for radio 1 !

This is really exciting I think, I wonder how much influence Grimmy will eventually have on the overall direction of Radio 1, especially music-wise. The current breakfast show only plays the BIG pop songs, but I can see Grimmy's show wanting to showcase atleast one or two 'newer or more indie' per show, might this drip through to the rest of the schedule?

Also Huw has to be a shoe-in for 10-12 right? Returning to a more music focused format? Who'll get his weekend slot? Chris when he returns? (with whoever, Annie Mac/Dev/Deacon as a stop-gap)

I can't help but remember a comment, I think from an interview with Ben Cooper (? Could be wrong) about Greg James 'being groomed for the Breakfast Show'. This makes me wonder if Grimmy is only intended as a short-term replacement. If that IS the case, I hope he gets decent ratings to make it difficult to justify taking him back out of the slot.

It's not called Switch anymore BECAUSE BBC GOT RID OF SWITCH COZ THEY ARE ALL STUPID AND I HATE THEMA AND AGTHRHRGHRHRRHHGVHGVHJGFVHJDFCVUGBUJFJNMFKJVB KJVB K.

Seriously though, I loved Switch. The Cut was my favourite show ever. (shoutout to http://thecutwriters.moonfruit.com/ - the episodes I've written aren't up yet. sad.). RANT CONTINUES IN MY MIND. . . .

OMASM. Radio presenters are like fruit. Matt is my kumquat and Scott is blatantly my orange.

I think they've made the right choice here. Grimmy has impressed me whoever's show he's been doing recently. Very easy-going and natural, more so than Greg, who I still think probably needs to nail down exactly what sort of radio show he wants to do.

Yes, but there has been no quote about for how long? Coxy and Mark and Lard were 'official' replacements and didn't last long. Also it doesn't stop them still having a plan for Greg in the relative (key word) short-term. This is all I'm saying.

Its very sad that Chris Moyles and the team are leaving the breakfast slot however I'm sure Grimme will do a great job. He's funny - just what you need whilst eating your cornflakes (no sarcasm meant)!

Greg James is off to Africa for Comic Relief. Read it here, r1newspost.wordpress.com.

  • 5 years later...

So today, Nick Grimshaw became the second longest Radio 1 breakfast show host.
Adele Roberts and Nick had a chat at 0625, she said "your the longest, apart from one other person, just beating Tony Blackburn".
Strange how Chris Moyles' name is not mentioned, just someone else.

    • I think Jack Saunders if in for the long haul may mature and develop as a presenter with the opportunities to do big interviews and features. I think I really enjoyed him doing the late version of the indie show the presentation style of future artists got repetitive of presenting as if every show is the first time the shows on air with over explaining the purpose. But think this show could have a different approach
    • Not a fan of Jack Saunders, but ...  This is a marked improvement over Clara Amfo (almost anything would have been) - And it's also better than what JS was doing in his previous slot - He's definitely been listening back to Zane Lowe, and drawing lessons from that.
    • @lochnessa what an incredible feature, really do miss the games from that show
    • Life Hacks is on 20.00-22.00 on Monday 13th, Tuesday 14th & Wednesday 15th May - in place of Future Artists and Future Pop.
    • Brother or Lover? WhooooOOOOooooeoeehrheroooooooooo.
    • What's your morning routine when you're working?
    • I feel like we all know how they'll answer that!
    • Makes sense, I always assumed they all went for 1D members regardless.
    • Do you prefer doing Capital Breakfast to Radio 1 or the other way round?
    • Jesus christ, Olivia Rodrigo was around 3 years ago!?! I thought she was only born in 2019. Anyway. They are doing it to rival commercial networks, on the main 2 lists anyway with rotating them more. Which all in all is a pit of misery. I'm sick to bloody death of Stick Season, it's an utter bag of mediocre wank that makes me even prefer James Blunt circa 2005. Radio 1 still is more expansive however, loved stuff they play and make their own early days, like Jungle Back on 74 like last year.  They can't lose doing stuff that, or else they become bland like everyone else. They have done that for many years though. I heard a song on a March 2001 aircheck from Chris Moyles recently and rediscovered a song by Kings Of Convenience, called Toxic Girl. Totally lost over 25 years but totally love it like it's new. Radio 1 has always played the big time pop stuff since your nan was 3. But they always have and still do throw something on the playlists that isn't what everyone else has. I hope they continue to do that as it sets them apart.
    • I think they are looking too much into this and need to get a proper job where you have to get up at 5am.
    • Zayn's current song isn't on the R1 playlist so would be odd for him to do an interview I guess, not sure either would want it?
    • You have both presented together before your show on Capital. Have you spent time together as friends since, or is the reunion like getting to know one another all over again?   I’m a long time listener in my mid 30s and now outside the R1 target audience age… Chris is into barbecuing and Jordan is into air frying, have you both noticed a change in the other since the days of R1? And are you under any pressure to be on trend at Capital?
    • What do you both miss most about your time at R1?
    • How are you finding the early mornings, and having your afternoons free? Was it easy getting to grips with a different desk and play out system? Do you have any upcoming OBs and anything else exciting planned for the show that you can exclusively share with Unofficialmills? 😀
