Radio 1 is to give support to 10 BBC Introducing acts this summer by adding one of them each week to its playlist.

The new strategy will kick off on Monday, June 21 when a new artist performing on the Glastonbury Introducing Stage will be added to the weekly playlist.

The additions of other new acts playing at summer festivals, up to Reading and Leeds at the end of August, will follow.

Radio 1 head of music George Ergatoudis says, “This is an exciting opportunity both for the acts who will get crucial daytime radio exposure early in their careers and for the Radio 1 audience who will get to hear some of the most exciting new artists emerging in the UK right now.”

BBC Introducing is a platform across BBC Radio for what are billed as “unsigned, undiscovered and under-the-radar” acts. On Radio 1 BBC Introducing artists are showcased during Huw Stephens’ show on Wednesday evenings and on the BBC Introducing shows going out on Wednesdays from midnight until 2am.

Late last year the station started adding some tracks from BBC Introducing artists to its daytime output.

BBC Introducing editor Jason Carter says, “BBC Introducing’s core commitment is to support new musicians across the UK, with both a direct route to the BBC through the uploader, via industry advice online and for some top-notch opportunities and exposure. It is fantastic to have BBC Radio 1 offering up regular slots for daytime airplay across the summer months. This will only further enhance the BBC's commitment to supporting brand new artists in the UK.”

Alongside BBC Introducing, Radio 1 added a new element to its daytime playlist in January under the banner In New Music We Trust, again in support of new artists. Up to five new or emerging artists, recommended by the station’s specialist DJs, feature each week. Successes here include Professor Green who went on to achieve a top-three hit on the OCC UK singles chart in April with I Need Tonight.
