Didn't hear much of Dev and Alice but even they acknowledged how strange it is calling it "Weekend Breakfast" on a Friday when most normal people are going to work/school/college like any other weekday. For people who listened, was the format as loose as the weekend show or did it feel like a weekday breakfast show?
Matt and Mollie - they do seem to genuinely get on but from the bit I heard, I wasn't that impressed. Their content seems so forced, they did a link of what music is coming up and did things like "Len Goodman's favourite song" for Seven by Catfish and the Bottlemen - I cringed. When you're so used to listening to Scott and Chris at that time on a Friday, they just seem like such a downgrade. Still listenable.
Scott - not much to say, he's brilliant on the chart and sounds so at home. You could tell how much he was enjoying it. Usually don't listen to the chart and tune in for Dance Anthems but had to listen for Scott's first - he sounded great on DA too.
Maya - this might be an unpopular opinion on here but I think she's brilliant. Ok technically there's still room for improvement but she has great personality and her content links were pretty good I think, much more entertaining than Clara whose show seems to revolve around "that was, this is" type of links apart from the Live Lounge. Maya's top of hour bits are good and I think there's huge potential with her, I see why Ben Cooper is pushing her into more prominent slots. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see her eventually take the 10-1 slot permanently. I was a bit confused to hear the Greatest Hits stop just after 11 - I think 3 hours is too much anyway but might make more sense to have the Greatest Hits dispersed more evenly throughout the show instead of going full-on between 10 and 11 and then basically just going back to the normal playlist for the rest of the show.

So has anyone listened much today? I heard a bit of Dev and Alice, who I do like a lot, more than Grimmy, but it just didn't sound quite right - it's a weekend breakfast show, which is obvious because that's the point of the weekend starting early, but weekday breakfast shows are a completely different beast to their weekend counterparts.
Weekday breakfast shows need to feel a lot more topical and "of the day", whereas weekend breakfast shows are mostly for people travelling or finishing up on overnights. They can feel a bit more timeless, but when you have a timeless weekend breakfast show on a weekday, it doesn't quite work. That's before you get into the whole "woooo it's the weekend" thing whilst Susan, 29 from Northampton is getting ready to go to her job as a middle manager at a call centre. Or something like that. Although Dev and Alice did acknowledge that.
Didn't hear Maya (nothing but respect for MY mid-mornings presenter, James. O'Brien) but I did see in the chatbox that the greatest hits stopped after 11. What stupidity. Although not too many complaints from me that they're not having too much more Greatest Hits. Should've been Jordan though, he could do with a less restrictive format.
As for Matt and Molly, I didn't hear them today either but I like them and I feel like Matt's act is the one that translates best to weekdays - not to mention the fact that he's had a lot of weekday experience covering that timeslot over the years, so he knows what he's doing.
But Scott on the chart is just great, I'm gonna miss having an extra day of show content but at least that awful Maya Jama arrangement is over.
The trails are pretty good too, I must admit. Especially the one where Alice Levine is the Queen.
Will it last? I'm not sure yet. But even if it's a dismal failure Ben Cooper would rather drive the figures into the ground before admitting he got it wrong.

I prefer the imaging Greg had - this update seems like a watered down version of the same package. I doubt Delicious Digital had any involvement in this refresh, I'd say the in-house R1 production team just updated what they got first time around.

Agreed, I'd love it. But even at the time Moyles's jingles were totally out of whack with the rest of the station - you had his classical Morning Movie stuff alongside the Pure Tonic RA-DI-OH-ONE stuff and it sounded very disjointed. Now Radio 1 sounds slicker than ever, I can't see them returning to cheesy jingles.
Maybe - if they can find a way to do it that doesn't sound naff and dated - they might bring back sung jingles. But I wouldn't hold my breath, like Ben, I reckon it'll basically be new versions in the same style as now.
Remember when it was actual news that they were getting rid of sung jingles? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-19255742

I wondered the same, but I doubt they'd let that happen - it would be too inconsistent & backwards now. I reckon the audio imaging will be pretty similar to current.

The flirtatiousness between Matt Fincham and ShowBot was hysterical at times. Made me realise just how genius Matt Fincham was as a producer.

Congrats to both Greg and Grimmy on this one, I have enjoyed Grimmy’s interpretation of the breakfast show but I do feel it was time for a change! One good thing that no one has mentioned yet, if Chris Smith does move with Greg, there should be more freedom for them to chat and for Chris to get involved with the show again as the news isn’t simulcasted on 1xtra! Like Ben i’m interested in what the imaging will be like (still waiting for Scotts new chart package as well)!

I didn't get a chance to listen to them yesterday, but even if they do - it's still very little. A massive shame, I've always liked listening to the comments in between songs. This year it's mostly music R1 plays everyday and 2-3 songs from artist's set.
Also, there was no mash-up this year. I'm not sure if they ditched it last year or just now. Again, not a fan of that.

I don't think it's at all weird. I think it's quite natural - especially if you listen to them every day and have done so for years. They share so much of their lives and you become invested; look at when Chris Stark announced he was getting married. That was a huge moment for me as a listener as I have listened to Scott and Chris for years - from the Tap End days and the stag dos/holidays in Kavos to this big thing.

I think I've mentioned this before, but his show just doesn't deserve to have lasted this long. It doesn't deserve to be up there with the greats. It just doesn't. It doesn't hold a candle to The Chris Moyles Show. It was quite good at first as well, the first two or three years managed to be different to Moyles but still relatively entertaining. But by 2015 it had run it's course. I would've preferred it if Greg had got breakfast in 2012 anyway.
Did Grimmy mark it on his show otherwise? I remember Moyles did a week long tour when he beat Blackburn's record, although back then he was becoming longest serving, not second longest.

I think this is a great move all round, this way Radio 1 should get a breakfast show with a bit more clout and a host hungry to be in the hotseat, while Grimmy will get a prominent slot that plays to his strengths better.
I reckon Grimmy's underrated on here really, I think his time on nights, daytime cover and first couple of years on breakfast were brilliant and justified his promotion over Greg in 2012, to be honest. I do think his show has been on autopilot for a few years now though, it just feels like the team have no real ideas for it and want any excuse to stick on a mix for an hour or so.  I feel like Grimmy's like Sara Cox in that he's at his best when he doesn't have to stick to a script, so if he's given less of a straitjacket and a decent features producer, I think afternoons should be a return to form for him.
Greg's probably a bigger name than Grimmy and has obviously been angling for this job for years, so hopefully this will mean we'll get a breakfast show with more prominence, like the Chris Moyles Show. At its worst, Grimmy's show sounded like any other daytime show. I want Greg's show to sound like a proper breakfast show plz

Leaving personal politics of me finding Edmonson an utter utter prick, he should work TWO DAYS a week. Nick works five.
Therefore, even if Nick has had 20 days off, he has not worked for just 5.5% of his allocated show time.
Matt would have not worked for 13.4% of his allocated show time.
    ______
As a separate note, I feel as though Radio 1 is becoming rapidly sanitised and Capital-like. The personal connection between listener and presenter as presented by Moyles, Fearne, Greg and Scott has been totally ruined by Amfo and the awful weekend line-up, which leaves literally not a single moment of desirable radio across the whole weekend.
So, if you were to ask me if holiday leave was too generous in 2011/2012, I'd say, yes, we love the presenters and hearing them leave disrupts our schedules / feels weird.
Frankly, that point no longer remains. People just don't care enough anymore.
    I'm off to Radio 2.

I agree with this to a point - I do think, on average, the quality of presenters and features has declined over recent years. Scott has stayed pretty good, best thing on Radio 1 by a country mile, but what he's doing now isn't quite as good as what he was doing ten years ago. But hey - if he was still doing the same thing he was doing ten years ago, he wouldn't be on air anymore. I also think Greg James peaked in 2014-15 and is audibly putting less effort into the show than he used to (I blame Ian for this, I think Pippa was fantastic and she's totally wasted on X), but do I feel like my personal connection with them has been eroded - not really.
I also think weekends are the best they've been in years - back in 2011/12, it was the pretty meh line up of Edith, Vernon/Sara (I liked Sara), Huw and Reggie, and then Gemma Cairney, Vernon/Sara, Huw and Danny Howard/Jameela. I remember vividly Edith doing a feature when she would just try and say as names as possible over the Pick of the Pops music and talking about films ad nauseam. Yawn. Vernon had the bloody maths question, Huw was not suited to daytime, and we all know my thoughts on Gemma. Weekends were DIRE. Nowadays - Dev doing original (if bizzare, but very entertaining) features, Matt Edmondson with his games and viral interviews, Alice Levine who's a laugh, Danny Howard who isn't my cup of tea but I'm sure does a good show, the only weak link is Cel Spellman. Weekends have never sounded this good.
Oh, and Radio 2 - I listened to Steve Wright in the Afternoon yesterday, but I got confused for a second, I thought it was the audio version of the newspaper. Genuinely, all I heard yesterday was Steve playing his jingles, reading out the email address and reading stories and "factoids" out of the papers. Give me Scott and Greg anyday.

I doubt there'll be any changes, at the end of the day it's still Ben Cooper calling the shots, and he seems pretty happy running the station into the ground for the time being. On a side note, can you imagine lovely Aled firing anyone?

Actually, I think Diane Abbott would be great on the chart - "and now a new entry at number 72, which means it's the biggest selling single in the UK this week, it's Liar Liar. I'll play you the number 23 after that, and we'll run down the top 10-36".

I think Newsbeat should be rebranded The Sun and the biased BBC should stop being so damn scared and replace Ben Cooper with that nice Rupert Murdoch fella - it's time things were shaken up a bit.
Playlist to consist of just the national anthem and football chants.
Change the station logo to a 1 that slants right rather than left.
The public have spoken and it's time to respect their wishes.

Can't help but feel that slot should be a more magazine-style show. Ain't cutting it for me with the drivelling long, winding, loud links. I'd suggest Rylan and Matt doing it together (not like I'd listen to that carcrash radio) if R1 is going for this angle. Whatever angle that is.

I wonder whether he's driving the desk himself - he's too loud but the bed is too low. Gotta say his voice really grates at this time of day (or any time of day). I'm just waiting for him to screw up the news, any minute now. Pretty sure he's already messed up the backtiming. (Although to be fair to him Dev was THREE minutes over today. Quite unlike him.)
