  1. Matt Edmondson really is an underrated gem of a broadcaster. Outstanding radio all week, but particularly a few minutes ago.

  3. Hello everyone Aled here, Head of Programmes at Radio 1. Thank you for all your passion for Scott, Chris and Radio 1 - the station’s success relies on fans like yourselves caring about radio and what we do and all of us at Radio 1 really appreciate it. Don't worry - I’m not planning on hanging around and cramping your style, I’m trying to get hold of Jono. I’ve used the ‘Contact us’ section but I’ve heard nothing yet, if someone on the board has his contact please ask him to email me. (It’s nothing bad!) Keep up the amazing work everyone, be as critical as you like, I’m sure Scott appreciates it. Thanks, Aled.

    Ask Chris and Jordan

Capital Radio's breakfast presenters have been really chuffed with the lovely comments you've left about the programme, and they want to give something back. So next week they've offered to come on the forums and answer some of your questions. Get your thinking caps on and post your questions for Chris and Jordan here. And who knows, they might rope Sian into it too. They'll have the licence to answer what they want, and I'm sure you have plenty of questions!

  5. Ah you cynics. If it was that orchestrated they'd not have stood at a finish line waiting for her last night only for her to arrive just as Newsbeat started.

  9. Think we are all gutted, but it's genuinely really exciting for him and a big scoop for Capital. I couldn't quite get into Roman's show, but I feel I'd be more tempted to listen to Jordan with Chris and Sian. Will have split loyalty with Greg!

Jordan North to leave Radio 1

Another aside - I think Sam and Danni are outstanding with a wide appeal demographically. Hope this gives them a chance for a big promotion.

  13. Actual LOL at Jordan and Scott just now: Jordan: oh god, they're gonna send me back to local radio - oh wait, all the jobs have gone. Scott: it's all coming from London now babes, Rock FM's not on anymore.

  14. God he has an irritating voice. Sounds so forced and unnatural. Reminds me of when Chris Moyles does his wacky deejay impression.

  15. This has been annoying me- one of the great things about RONR is the banter between Scott, Chris and the DJ and the flow of the game. It has the potential to be one of the funniest things on Radio 1 when they're on top form and the facts are funny. Stopping after 1 fact to play a song we've heard countless times is pointless and ruins the flow. It's happened a few times where they've only done 2 facts. Such a shame, especially now that they have such a good line-up with Greg on Mondays, Charlie Sloth on Tuesdays, Alice on Thursdays and Cel on Friday. They all have the potential to be hilarious and have been great the last few weeks, just drop the song in the middle and go back to 4 facts!

  16. Think that Radio 1 really needed this week, charity aside, to come together again. I don’t think they ever diverged, but the Jordan news I think was challenging and as a listener this week has secured that perception of the family again.

  17. It's been a great week of radio. Radio 1 at its best - promoting a great cause and all the DJs on air together and shows how much they all get along. This week has highlighted too just how great the likes of Greg, Matt and Katie are as broadcasters - they have been superb covering the challenge and in their genuine love and support for Mollie (who has been doing so well and is giving it her all). Lovely too to see Matt & Mollie get their flowers so much in the past month - both thoroughly deserve it and their kindness and good spirit has really shone through these last few days even more than usual. Matt's link yesterday about how Mollie has been a support to him and him to her at around 4.45pm yesterday was just so wonderful and heartfelt and what Radio is all about.

  18. The more I think about this, the less I understand it. Vick and Katie would be a good Going Home show without Jamie. What did happen in the aftermath of Jordan leaving. Did Katie initially turn it down and they persuaded her to change her mind? Did they see the reaction to Jamie and see that they needed Katie to balance out the loss of Jordan? Some odd chain of events has happened

    Greg's new contract

I wonder if this was always on the cards and is why Jordan has jumped - 2-3 more years of Greg and he’d be in Scott Mills territory of being passed over for Breakfast in favour of a younger DJ.

  22. I know it's a different kettle of fishh because Roman isn't moving to a rival station, but the contrast between Roman announcing he is leaving and the outpouring of love, and the BBC cancelling Jordan I find really jarring.

  23. This is the first time since I started listening to Radio 1 (2016) that I’ve been genuinely floored by an announcement. There have been a lot of changes and I’ve raised by eyebrows a few times but everything had some element of logic to it even if I wouldn’t have made the exact same choice. With regards to Jordan I would have bet a lot of money on him being a shoe in for R1 Breakfast next, the succession plan seemed very clear - Greg could go this year or next if he wanted to, after a good run, and you have a ready made Breakfast star in Jordan and the likes of Katie/Sam and Danni/Dean all capable of stepping in on Going Home at that stage. Jordan at Breakfast and Vick and Katie on Going Home wouldn’t feel like a downgrade from now! Now Radio 1 seems in a real pickle in terms of succession planning for Breakfast. I can only assume Jordan was given an offer he couldn’t refuse - if it’s him and Chris Stark for Capital Breakfast it’s a coup for Global, a truly national sounding breakfast offering, and something Radio 1 must have been unwilling to give him right now, more power to him! As for Jamie Lang - I won’t be harsh because these are real people and you never know how it pans out, but it’s completely inexplicable to me. From a show that deliberately pitched itself (they did an interview about this a year ago) as a show aimed at young people outside London to someone from Made in Chelsea, I just don’t know what they’re doing and I have to wonder if it’s a Matt Goodier-style stopgap (he was given Radio 1 Breakfast for a few months in the 90s as the “permanent” host even though it was always a temp holding position), because I can’t see Vick or Jamie committing to a daily show in the long term (I had suspected Vick might not last the year; she’s brilliant but she has so much else going on, hope I’m wrong). Anyway… let’s see what happens! All seems a bit of a panic and Radio 1 in a bit of a tailspin this week, suspect Aled will do some serious thinking about the 12-18 month direction the schedule takes from here, suspect it may look quite different. Edit: If I was R1 management I would cling to Greg James like a life raft right now! Without him the entire house of cards looks weak. You need a few years to build up a future Jordan-like “heir” to be the main star on the station. Shoehorning in the likes of Dean would be calamitous.

  24. What I can't understand is why they've replaced their biggest Northern presenter with a southerner who's incredibly posh and probably a multi millionaire? He's just not relatable. Jordan was the down to earth relatable guy. The lack of northern presenters on this station isn't good.

    Ken Bruce leaves Radio 2

Vanessa Feltz is another one jumping on the BBC bashing bandwagon... (unsurprising considering who she works for now) She was happy to take a wage from them for many years until she jumped ship. Funny how she's piping up with the ageism bollocks. All the people moaning at the BBC for "getting rid of him like they did Steve Wright"... The latter still works at R2, and Ken was signed up by GHR, not much the BBC can do if his mind is made up.

  26. If they haven't changed their emergency tape since 2004 we may get a few blasts of Outkast Hey Ya followed by The Sugababes Hole In The Head... Running gag from the old days that.

  28. At the risk of disappearing down this same rabbit hole as last time... There is - quite simply - no 'problem' to fix, and even more than that, improvements are being made all the time. The station has recently won a bunch of awards, there is more new talent than that has been for years, the presenter roster is diverse and inclusive.... Of course yes you could put MORE new talent on, or MORE diversity (e.g. Asian voices), but that's missing the point. The goal of equality should be to ensure everyone gets a fair go, and is not discriminated against. Clearly that has been happening at the station for a good while, and there is no need to 'force-fit' any further such changes - we can just let that happen naturally now as talent evolves and grows. It's also critical to keep a good focus on listener numbers, just as they are doing. It's idealistic to say that that doesn't matter and the station should push the boundaries further in daytime - quite simply without the strong figures, the station would be doomed. If anyone thinks the station sounds similar to commercial rivals in daytime, they really need to reconsider that view!!! R1 Dance / Relax are low-cost add-ons that will attract a few more people to the station, and they do offer a commercial-free option that is pretty unique. All in all Aled is doing a fantastic job, the station has rarely sounded better and has never had such a forward-looking presenter strategy!

  29. It's a bit sad knowing that this is the last ever time Alice will be on R1. She's always been one of my favourite presenters and listening to her show has always manged to put a smile on my face and often had me laughing out loud. Best of luck to her in whatever she does next.

    Hello New Members!

Hi everyone! My name is Isaac and I’m currently a Computer Science student. I am also a massive radio geek as well – I’ve been listening to Radio 1 now for 6 years and to The Official Chart for nearly 6 and a half years. I’ve been a long time lurker on this forum (5 years I think!) and I’ve loved reading the comments and posts about Radio 1 ever since I found this. I’ve always wanted to join in the fun with comments and posts of my own but I’ve either delayed putting it off or been too shy to make a move. Hopefully, with everything strange going on, now is the right time. I look forward to getting more involved with the forum during times of big discussion here, whatever happens to Radio 1. Maybe a new presenter might join. Maybe Scott Mills will do 9 years in the afternoons. Maybe Jordan North will get the primetime slot he deserves. But for now … thanks for having me!

  32. Actually, I think Diane Abbott would be great on the chart - "and now a new entry at number 72, which means it's the biggest selling single in the UK this week, it's Liar Liar. I'll play you the number 23 after that, and we'll run down the top 10-36". The Official Chart with Diane Abbott - every Goosday from 4pm-76:30.

  33. I think 275k is pretty amazing for 24 hours! The Gregathlon got a million but that was over a week so 5 days, it was all in daytime, got heavy promotion & regular updates on all the daytime main shows and was more of an "achievement" thing. Scott & Chris only had 6 and a half hours of primetime R1 really (Drive on Tuesday when it was only starting so the hype wasn't there yet and it hadn't hit its stride plus breakfast on Wednesday). A lot of it was evening, overnight, mid-morning, afternoon- hardly peak time. What an amazing 24 hours of radio though- the Non-Innuendo Bingo was possibly one of my favourite ever Mills moments (so hilarious), the Chris Stark roast, Sex Hour, Charlie Sloth Fat Jokes all brilliant and it really got going with Matt Edmondson, Alice Levine, Nick Grimshaw and Greg James there from about 10pm-4am. That was just the Lolathon and Radio 1 at its best and the jokes got much filthier! Only criticisms: they could've booked slightly better/bigger celebrities to come in- they got Ricky Gervais, Russell Brand etc but there could've been more big names maybe? Also- the music got really boring after a while. They must've played Lorde and Kings of Leon about 10 times each. Best bits were Ten Minute Takeover, Grimmy's picks (like Kaytranada, Florence & The XX etc- sounded amazing on late night radio and were great throwbacks to his time doing that show), Mistajam had some good ones, Workout Wednesday on Adele's slot: there should've been more of that and more variety- maybe some older tracks and ones Radio 1 hasn't played in a while. The playlist just got quite repetitive. Brilliant show, great job by Scott & Chris, hilarious, fantastic cause and loads of money raised! *hand clap emoji*

  34. It doesn't help that they now shorten some songs so they can squeeze in even more of the 'popular hits'. And they've definitely upped the music quotas (again), Scott has to play a song in the middle of Real or No Real now and it's been cut down to 3 facts instead of 4. Today there was only 2 facts because he spoke to Greg for too long - Greg goes "I feel short changed, isn't there normally 3?" to which Scott responded "yes but I've got to play the hits". Sounds like they've definitely been told to play more songs / not drop them.

  35. I hate reverse snobbery and I post this reluctantly as we shouldn't hold Jamie's background against him, but I do think many listeners will find it hard to identify with Jamie. One of the things that made Jordan so popular was he sounded like the mate you go for a pint with who always has a great story to tell.

  38. I can’t see it been so late When sonny left it was almost instant i think we can expect an announcement Monday morning with Jordan been brought into the studio and perhaps romans last week Reading between the lines on global marketing of the show from capital breakfast with Roman Kemp to “with Roman , Chris and Sian “ was a subtle hint to less focus on all been about Roman when a bbc show changes it gets a whole new feel, capital seem to like a gradual approach to keep listeners already established global seems a more long term plan for presenters now, nothing to say he couldn’t go to radio x in a few years to succeed moyles after the capital breakfast gig Ironic that commercial radio was just a few years ago awash with celebs without a radio career crowbarred into one, now it seems a little of the opposite

  40. I think it has been a better game to the past few years after the first one it feels a bit more relaxed, simplified and haven’t over complicated things. As always with these things it seems very orchestrated and easy to see that the production team has thought of what goes where. What it can be said that unlike previous editions of a summer game it has been more calculated marketing that considers the whole stations brand of featuring presenters of all its programming and reminds people of the good specialist programme the station has off-peak times.

    Final Ever Radio 1 Shows

With Scott leaving recently I thought I'd put something a little interesting up for people to hear back. There could be many out there I've missed so feel free to add any, especially post 2012ish stuff which I'm not too up on really. Below are some poigniant final ever Radio 1 shows, with a little backstory to go along. Scott Mills 2022-08-25 Only one place to start really. After 24 years at Radio 1 for Scott Mills, and 10 for Chris Stark. The curtain closed on the show in 2022 in emotional style. We all know the story here for that. Chappers 2009-12-24 The younger audience may or may not know. But before Chris Stark, Scott had another co presenter in Mark 'Chappers' Chapman. He worked on Scott's 4-7pm drivetime show from 2004 to 2009. As a co presenter and also sports reporter on Newsbeat. Chappers also worked with Sara Cox on the Breakfast show, and Dave Vitty (Comedy Dave) for 'Chappers and Dave' on Radio 1 in the 2000's. You can now find him doing Match of the day on the telebox. Chris Moyles 2012-09-14 Chris Moyles started life at Radio 1 the same way Scott did. On early breakfast back in 1997. Following a successful afternoon show (1998 to 2003), Radio 1 gave Chris Moyles breakfast to kick off 2004. A move that reaped the benefits following falling ratings. Moyles would go on to host breakfast until 2012. He returned to radio in 2015 with Radio X, fronting the breakfast show there. He split opinion, but for us of a certain generation he defined an era. And on his day could be brilliant and incredibly funny. Chris Moyles (Final Afternoon Show) 2003-12-03 Not the end of Chris Moyles on Radio 1, but a sort of end of an era for people of a certain age. Chris was handed the afternoon show in 1998 following a good stint on early breakfast. The show originally ran from 4-5.45pm, but was given an extra hour in 2001 following Simon Mayo leaving and a reshuffle of the schedule. Through my school years I grew up with hearing Mark & Lard on afternoons followed by Chris Moyles, they coincided perfectly for me. In 2004 Chris moved to breakfast, Mark & Lard left Radio 1, and I left school. Mark & Lard 2004-03-26 One of the ones I heard on the day, and haven't been able to listen to since. You either got these two or you didn't, I got them and they were brilliant. Free thinking, said what they thought, unique, and just two northern tosspots (self described) who couldn't believe they were given a Radio 1 show. They joined Radio 1 in the early 90's hosting the Graveyard shift which really was a bundle of comedy, poetry and up and coming new indie music. They were given the breakfast show after Chris Evans left, the less said about that the better. The afternoon show that ran from 1997 to 2004, was a success. Featuted quality items such as 'Lard's Classic Cuts', 'Missing Words', 'Beat The Clock'. And 'It's A Mystery', where Mark & Lard introduced their 'Whoooooooo?' catchphrase (later continued by Scott). Most of these were usually Lard inspired, on the phone in another studio putting on a daft voice! The last show they got to ditch the Radio 1 playlist (no more pesky Ja Rule crap to put up with!). Travis joined them on the show, there was a special song from Coldplay, a goodbye song from all the Radio 1 DJ's, a phone message from David Bowie plus numerous other skits and bits. The show ended with half a catchphrase 'Stop!', a Radio 1 sweeper, and silence, followed by the emergency backup tape. And then Sara Cox afterwards filling people in on what they just heard. There was a running gag where sometimes control from Manchester where they broadcast from, back to London went wrong. And sometimes they'd just see how long they could stay silent for to test the waters. That time it was on purpose. I remember staring at the radio when they went off kind of half expecting them to come back on, they never did. Simon Mayo 2001-02-15 Simon Mayo seems to be the DJ who was the link between the Radio 1 of old (cheesy 80's jingles and roadshow shorts era), and the Radio 1 of the new millenium. He survived the Bannister axe in the early 90's, down to the fact that he was bloody good tbh. A talented presenter who took on various shifts across the station including the breakfast show at a point. I only heard bits of Simon Mayo in his Radio 1 days, as I only started properly listening to the station around 1999 way. I began to appreciate how good he was in his Radio 2 days when he hosted drivetime there. Sadly the Radio 2 management butchered things up by pairing him with Jo Whiley which never worked. Simon left Radio 2 and is now on Greatest Hits. His final Radio 1 show was a final show you'd expect. A mix of memories, music, and a final handover with Jo Whiley. Nemone 2005-09-xx Even though I recorded this I'm not fully sure of the exact date aside that it was September 2005. Nemone joined Radio 1 in 2000, covering Jo Whiley when she was off and having her own weekend show. In 2004 she replaced Scott Mills on early breakfast, as he was moved to drivetime to replace Sara Cox. She later went on to join 6 Music and left there in 2021. The final show was favourite picks, songs, memories. And another time Spice Girls 'Goodbye' was used, Scott also played it for Chappers final show (above). Dave Pearce (Dance Anthems) 2008-09-26 Dave had his radio roots laid back in the 1980's but joined Radio 1 in 1995. He as many others, started on early breakfast taking over from Bruno Brookes. He also had late drive (6-8pm) for a spell from 1998 until 2004, which also included the legendary 'mix at 6'. Dave was also the first ever voice on Radio 1 as the year 2000 rolled around, hosting a special millenium essential mix alongside Judge Jules from Glasgow. Dance Anthems is where Dave Pearce really made his mark on Radio 1, he was the original innovator. The show started in 1997 and was broadcast on Sunday nights from 7pm-9pm. Later moved in 2007 for it's final year to Friday nights 11pm-1am. Dave and other DJ's such as Pete Tong and Judge Jules were really at the forefront of the trance music boom, that engulfed dance music over the late 90's and early millenium. Dance anthems was a hard show to convince Radio 1 bosses to take on, because they thought that people wouldn't want Dance Music on a Sunday at that time. But it became an institution, with shows also coming live from the likes of Ibiza and Magaluf. Dave's final show included lots of classic dance anthems, a small montage of his Radio 1 years, and the final track being William Orbit - Adagio For Strings. Dave took Dance Anthems to 6 Music where it felt an irregular fit on a mostly indie station, so was short lived. He still plays out doing his trance anthems gigs, and can be heard on Radio 2 from time to time in recent years. Usually hosting New Years Eve/Day shows. A new look Dance Anthems returned to Radio 1 in 2012 with Danny Howard on Saturdays. So there you have it, some final Radio 1 shows of interest. Feel free to add more below if you know of any.

  42. As we head into 2022, just my few thoughts on the new line up. In short: it's fantastic. I don't think there have ever been more shows on Radio 1 that I actively want to listen/catch-up with. Vick & Jordan are really growing into the drive slot. Sadly it just shows how poor Grimmy's show was when you compare just how much speech/content/fun they manage to squeeze into the show. There's plenty of different weekly features, they've got the daily staple in the 'Something Songs' & the 'talkers' always feel quite natural and generate some good stories. Basically they move the show on every 15/30 minutes & the hard work of the production team really does shine through. It's a shame it doesn't have a Scott Mills Daily style podcast to make catching up easier. I'm growing to like the pairing even more - sometimes I do feel Vick's humour doesn't quite work with Jordan. She kind of stunts his jokes and the way he plays up the whole Northern thing (but I guess I am comparing this to Jordan's podcast with William Hanson who just knows when to sit back and let Jordan be the fool). Katie is great cover too, she works with both Vick & Jordan so should keep the show sounding consistent all year round. RMC: I like them. I really enjoyed the evening show they did, because it was a little bit naughty & had plenty of games, even if the music wasn't always to my taste. Personally, it does feel like they've not translated this very well across to the new slot. I loved night night nonsense (a different game every Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday where Rickie/Melvin/Charlie each host one night and the other 2 play), if they did something similar (midday madness? ?) it would really lift the whole show in my opinion. The daily features they have started aren't that strong: Random annoys me, Skive lounge is fun but maybe not as often & Melvin's Live Lounge guessing game just sticks out (why are they only doing it 1 day a week when they do LL rewinds every morning?). It just feels like they have been pinched a bit too much on talk time & when there is 3 of them on the show it feels a bit of a waste of talent. Of course it shouldn't be as fast paced/packed as Breakfast or Drive, but I think Scott & Chris show that the 'content filled' shows do work outside of peak. My biggest wish for 2022 is that they can inject a bit more fun into this show. Shout outs are fine till 11, then the Live Lounge, but some different good features every half hour after that would be great. Greg James and Scott & Chris deliver the 2 most consistently great shows on radio anywhere in the UK, in my opinion. Obviously not too much to say here because they weren't new for September 2022, but they have certainly kept up their game alongside the new additions to the line up. I hope neither change for a good while to come. Reinstating Greg on a Friday was probably one of the best decisions of the year. My one niggle with Breakfast is that I wish they made more of the 9:30 till 10:30 slot. I miss the daily madness of the 6:30 till 7am bit. Evenings - I don't listen to them as regularly (I used to catchup with RMC) but whenever I have heard Clara, Jack & Sian, it really does feel like they are in the perfect places on the schedule. They each love the slot they do & it shows. Just a shame we have lost an entertainment based evening show. Even if it was 10-12, so it could be naughty again with Powerdown at 12am. Weekends - Adele is a pro and very much suits the weekend Breakfast slot. It doesn't need to be as fast paced as weekdays & I think the past few years of having the 2 different duos on then just shows what a waste it can be, especially on a quiet morning like Sunday. I'm still not 100% sold on Dean, he is good but I did prefer Jordan in that slot. As has been mentioned here before, I wonder if it's too much too soon. Should he be on Early Breakfast with Arielle at the weekends? My personal choice would've been RMC on a Friday, Dean on a Sunday & someone new on a Saturday - gives a slot to another ex-Xmas/Friday EB presenter too. (I'd pick Sam & Danni. Saturday, so they are still free to cover life hacks on a Sunday). Matt & Mollie are sounding the best they ever have. The move back to weekends really did 'reset' their show and the stuff they do is on a par with the duos on Monday to Thursday. Some really great games and the 'talkers' they do are also generating some of the funniest stories too. Again, it's a shame they don't have a podcast. They could probably get away with a pretty beefy weekly one?

  46. It wouldn't be the first time the Radio 1 bosses have done such a thing with their best presenter(s). Losing Scott would be a huge loss though, simply down to the fact that he's head & shoulders above anyone else there imo. As regards with Scott moving to Radio 2 in the near future, it can happen and I think will work even if he has to adapt a little. But by the time/if he goes R2, it'll have a different sound to now. I think pre 1980 music will feature a lot less, if at all during daytime hours. Look at it this way, Radio 2 is a changing station even more so than Radio 1. How many presenters during Scott's Radio 1 years (or slightly before) work on Radio 2 now? Chris Evans, Simon Mayo, Sara Cox, Dave Pearce, Mark Radcliffe, Jo Whiley etc. Plus one off shows. Not only that but I think some long standing presenters will be moving on from there over the next 5 years to make room. Radio 2 took a big controversial decision with cutting "Sounds of the 60's", wrong or right they are moving to a different age themselves. They are aiming to pull in people like me, from their late 20's who've long outgrown Radio 1 to people approaching 50 now. I gotta admit they are winning me over as well.

  47. As I mentioned in the chatbox, Bauer stations are broadcasting the brits this year, between 7 and 11pm, I believe they may have snagged exclusive radio rights to it for the next few years. As I type this, Alice and Clara from R1 are on ITV2 doing the red carpet show, which I think is just pre recorded interviews and some montages. Update: Tried to listen to the networked Bauer show, gave up after 5 minutes, truly awful, even by Bauer standards

  48. Grimmy's going to see the new Fifty Shades film with Alan Carr tonight. A Radio 1 DJ going to see Fifty Shades of Grey with a much older and eccentric celebrity - what an original idea!

  49. Well firstly, he doesn't work for BBC News so the need to be balanced isn't as important and the things he posts on social media are to try and make positive cases to his followers as well as being funny so can't see anything wrong with that. Not like he's slagging off Theresa May or being really political- it's his private account anyway. Secondly, I would put money on Greg not being the new Capital Breakfast host. I'd say it'll be Will Manning or Roman Kemp- two brilliant presenters Capital already have who would be perfect for the target audience and would fit in with George and Lilah. Greg's style is just SO different to Capital- his games, features, chats with Chris Smith, use of language and expression etc wouldn't go with the Capital style. He has so much freedom on Radio 1, gets to do other things like Children in Need, the Gregathlon and has been allowed to take the BT Sport cricket job (if he took Capital Breakfast, he'd have to quit the cricket job because most of it's in the middle of the night). And of course, he's probably next in line for the Radio 1 Breakfast Show. Really can't see it happening
