50,000 tickets for Radio 1’s Big Weekend were snapped up within 40 minutes of going online.
The tickets were released online through SeeTickets and went online on Tuesday morning at 8.05am. By 8.19am all tickets for the wider UK area – approximately 5% – had been allocated.
It was just before 8.45am that there were only 4,000 tickets available for the Norwich city postcodes, and these had been snapped up 5 minutes later.
Approximately 55% of tickets had been reserved for Norwich City Council residents with a further 20% for those outside the city council perimeter but living in Norfolk. A further 20% was reserved for those living in East Anglia.
Neil Wyatt, head of live music and events for BBC Popular Music, said: “It is brilliant to see the tickets go so quickly. One of the main reasons we are bringing Radio 1’s Big Weekend to Norwich is because we know that there is a real appetite for new music and it’s great to see the excitement in the city.
“If you weren’t able to secure a ticket for the event, we will be revealing information about Radio 1’s Academy including the sessions that will be available very soon, so keep listening to Radio 1 if you want to be involved.”
As with previous Big Weekend events, listeners took to social media to complain of issues with the process. This year there appeared to be fewer problems with the website struggling to cope due to a queuing system, but this still prevents website visitors from reserving their tickets.
